Greg put new Birkenstock bottoms on my pair of 5yr old Birkenstocks. He had the exact Birkenstock rubber that they use! He also cleaned the shoes and treated the leather. He walked me through his work which included buffing with natural materials, heel/sole repair with Vibram materials. For $40, this is money well spent. I have never written a review for any service before, but am making the exception for Greg at Colonial. I gave him 4 pairs of boots, that he magically transformed to look like new. One pair in particular is over 20 years old, and with his artisans touch, made it appear as if they had been lightly worn. Amazing work and craftsmanship that is hard to find in Boston, let alone anywhere in my opinion. So by now you've noticed the reviews for this place is pretty good. I'll give Colonial that; they do good work in restoring your shoes/boots. I've been here twice and shrugged it off the first time because of the outcome of the work done. The second time it was just blatant. Over $90 in and I didn't get the same customer service as everyone else here, I wonder why? :) There is also one other thing you'll notice when you scan the photos for everyone who has left a great review. I've never been to a cobbler before and was reading around online for reviews. A lot of places had reviews saying they've been ripped off, the quality of the repair was bad, things were damaged, and the cobblers were mean or rude. Greg is amazing. Enough said. I went into Colonial Shoe Repair last week with a leather bag I got in Morocco last month. The strap was starting to rip and I was scared I'd end up ruining the bag. I brought it into the shop and Greg was so kind and helpful. He even replaced the laces on my boots. I gave him the bag for a week and I returned today and I didn't even recognize the bag! (That's a good thing!) Not only was the strap fixed, but the bag looked clean and shiny. He charged a very fair price, I did not feel like I got ripped off at all. I live on a tropical island where I usually go barefoot or wear sandals. But every once in a while I need to wear shoes on the mainland. But, my little island does not have a cobbler! So, when my loafers (bought in Venice in 2001) needed new soles and heels just as they were getting really comfortable, I didn't know what to do. Then a business trip to Boston came up and I took the shoes along, and on the walk from South Station to Beacon Hill, I dropped in to Colonial Shoe Repair (based on previous Yelp! comment). . . best decision in a long time. Greg not only re-soled and re-heeled the shoes but also detected a place where they were coming apart which would have ruined them in short order (I had seen it but not knowing shoes did not pay attention). When he found the additional repair need, he called me to explain and get an OK. I had a pair of Ted Baker dress shoes that I was ready to throw out. They had some deep scuffs and the winter salt had really taken a toll on them. Colonial shoe, threw a new pair of leather soles on them, buffed out the scuffs, and repaired some of the leather damage. This gentleman is an artist, and he knows his craft. I took a leather jacket that I gambled on purchasing in a thrift store in NYC (Brooks Brothers) for 15 bucks with an enormous tear to Greg's shop a few weeks ago. When I went in to meet him, we ended up talking for about an hour about the lack of appreciation for authentic hands-on work, and he looked at the jacket, and took on the challenge. I knew it was in good hands from the moment I left the store, to the day I picked it up. When I saw the work he did, I could not believe it... I could barely see where the tear was, and believe me, it was a tear! While I stood at the counter he placed a pair of freshly polished military shoes down on the far side of the counter. During the entire time he helped me with my jacket I could barely keep my eyes off of these polished leather shoes... They were so clean, and so shiny that they could have been in a Jeff Koons Exhibition, almost irresistible not to touch. When I asked, he explained that if you are in the military, they expect your shoes to be precisely spotless and clean. Looking at the shoes, I felt lucky for the owner, for what a great job Greg did, and his sincerity shined through his work. I really believe in Greg's work, and his craftsmanship. I am debating between four and five stars, and went with four... Consider this a 4.5 stars. The work is good. I had a pair of boots I got used a pair of protective rubber soles. Came out very good but I thought it was a tiny bit too expensive. Maybe it's the location, which I guess I pay for convenience. But the guy there did explain that it was because the boots original leather soles were worn down a bit and he needed to build something on the tip. He definitely took his time to make sure you understand why he was going to do certain things for a certain amount, and gave me options and time to think over. No complaints. I probably would give it five stars if it were less expensive. Maybe I just need to get used to owning finer things. read more

Tried colonial for the first time and had a phenomenal experience! I have been to a couple of different cobblers in the downtown area that have either yelled at me for waiting too long to bring in heels and giving me a hard time or charged a fortune for a crappy job (and still made me feel horrible). Colonial had a decent turn around time and my booties came back almost like new! I did not expect them to ever look this good again, and the kicker? They were only $18 (which competitively is a steal in the area). Not only did he do a great job, but he noticed the wear on my riding boots and politely suggested a treatment for them to restore them to their natural color again.
