Then as your eyes take it all in, you'll focus on all the banners hanging from the ceiling honoring all the greats that were produced in this gym; Kenny Anderson (my idol as a 2-guard playing back in my day), Rod Strickland, God Shammgod, Chris Mullin, Stephon Marbury, John Salley, Mark Jackson, and Kemba Walker to name a few. You can tell the gym undertook a renovation some years ago and surely it can't compete with all the newer, more technically advanced gyms that are popping up every now. Both my children have thrived under his teaching and we have followed him from his previous location to the new one. The location is in fact the biggest drawback: the room is small, there's no waiting area, just a hallway and stairwell, and adults have nowhere to go while their children take the class, which is a pain. But it's not so much of a pain that I would ever look for another class because Cary has been truly amazing for my kids: they have progressed steadily, they take the class seriously and enjoy it, and most importantly, they love karate. He has incredible professional boxing experience and a lot of experience training professional boxers, but he is able to adjust his training to everyone's level. I am nearly 70 years old and describe myself as a recreational boxer at the beginning/intermediate level, and Athanasios was able to structure my training sessions to be challenging, but achievable. His sessions were a fantastic cardio workout! My boxing skills improved a great deal while I trained with him weekly for more than one year. Sadly, Athanasios moved away to live in New York City so I can't train with him anymore, but if you have the opportunity to train with him, DO IT!
