Any of you who have ever worked as an extra will know that it is an enjoyable job, but not without it's occasional inconveniences, one of which is the canteen at Ardmore Studios.
It is a not uncommon misconception that you get your lunch given to you when you're working as an extra. This is not strictly false, as when you are on location or if the canteen is closed on holidays catering will be provided, but otherwise you are given an allowance for your breakfast and lunch, which amounts to fifteen euro per day, five for breakfast, ten for lunch.
This is yours to spend as you wish. If you wanna eat a big breakfast before you go to work and bring a sandwich with you from home, well more power to you, save your money.
The proprietor of the Ardmore canteen does not take the same view, however. A haughty man with a beard, he views that fifteen euro as his revenue by right, and hates to see a penny of it unspent in his premises. If you go in and order one of the big lunches for ten or twelve euro, he would be pleasant and polite. If, however, you only ordered two euro chips to go with the sambo that you brought from home, he would be very arrogant and brusque.
(The food was pretty shite, by the way. Who eats gammon or mutton anymore, anyway?)
One of the lads went in and got chips and only chips every day without fail for the better part of two summers (contrary to your expectations, he's actually very thin). Every day, the snooty chef would practically snarl "Just chips again, hmm?", to which my friend would reply with a big grin and a nod.
One day this self-same chap was in the queue with a number of other extras. "Try the chips, they're great", he said in a voice clearly audible to the chef, "you get some attitude thrown in for free".
Shite food and awful service, but great memories. read more
