On holiday from America, my husband and I found a tiny naked bird, eyes still shut and just a few tufts of feather on, struggling on our cottage walkway. I picked it up and searched in vain for a nest. Finally tucked it into a tea towel and looked up local vets. Found Archway but it was closed for bank holiday, so I called the emergency number and left a message, fully aware that the vet may not return a nutty call to a US mobile at 5 on bank holiday about a bird. Ten minutes later he called and said he would be there within 15 minutes. Doctor checked my sad find and explained that it was much too small to survive but he would euthanize it to keep it from suffering. I apologized for calling him on his holiday and he was so kind about it. I tried to pay but he said they don't charge for wildlife calls. He was sincere and compassionate and professional. I'm glad I met him even though I'm sad for the poor bird who never got to live and sorry I shortened such a nice man's holiday. read more
