Although it feels a bit as if you jumped on a rocket and got to the future when you get up here. The park is so close to Landungsbrücken, yet so different. But still with the same pretty view of harbor, cranes and ships. It isn't really much more than a park, but the view makes it worth it. The lack of tourists as well and let's just face it: the sort-of strange details like hammocks and palm trees that look like they've been build out of Lego, too. Awesome place to just sit and talk with a friend or two, three, four, while enjoying Harbor Hamburg around you.

It's rumoured that Radiohead based their classic "Fake Plastic Trees" on this actual park.

I should mention that it's not suitable for roadbikes - a mountain bike would be best. The woodland here was actually more fun to cycle around than that in the nearby Niendorfer Gehege forest, and there are some reasonably sized hills. Almost part of the park is the Dahliengarten which is incredibly well cared for, and I assume from walking around it has probably the biggest collection of Dahlia flower species in the world. Also just on the edge of the park is the Hauptfriedhof Altona (main Altona cemetery), which is also nice to walk around. Overall, I think it's a better park for cycling, jogging or walking the dog than actually using as a standard park - most of Volkspark is forested.

Although it's super-close to the Schanze and St Pauli it's officially in Altona. One other oddity is that it's actually a graveyard. Walking through the areas of town considered by one such northerner to be worthy, I stumbled across Wohlerspark, and I was smitten immediately. There's nothing grandiose about the park; it's not big, has neither the grandeur of Planten un Blomen nor the size of the Stadtpark, lacks both lake and river frontage, and yet there's something sublime about this spot. An excellent place to start the day, or end an evening.
