4 stars for the wonderful staff, great PT & OT team, the facility is nice & clean with several garden setting areas to sit and visit. Food definitely needs work. Odors are common in facilities but this place isn't that bad at times. Rooms are usually shared with TV, most have windows, no phones in the rooms which is understandable. My mother has been at Arbor Hills for the past few months. She received attention right away from what I can only describe as a very caring staff. Literally everyone my family and I came in contact with that were part of our mother's care, took the time to answer our many questions and do their best to attend to her needs. The staff (caregivers, admissions, front office, physical therapists) have been excellent in all aspects of care, and I can recommend this facility for anyone's loved one that needs a safe and professional environment during their stay at this quality nursing center. The grounds are very nice, and the patio and library areas are a great place for families to visit their family member. My experience there was awful. When a nurse reminded me to drink water, I pointed out that the water they refreshed every 3 hours was out of my reach - about 4 feet from by bed. I could not walk at the time- this happened repeatedly. I would buzz for help - diaper change - 3 hours was the usual response time. The nurses would try to give me blood pressure medication when my blood pressure was 100/60. I asked for a higher protein diet, due to my condition, they could not accommodate, I was there for 6 weeks. I called it Arbor hell. read more

Well first I had diarrhea for over a week maybe 2 then the itching starts all over my body goes on well over a month the doctor that comes on Mondays said we'll it dies not look like scabies I looked it up looked just like it to me they sent me to a dermatologist about 2 weeks ago she scraped some sores found no bugs but was leaning that it's scabies I had already been given 2 scabies treatments at that time and now they give me topical treatments everyday plus I just finished my second dose of the pill for that stuff the food here was so bad I lost a lot of weight but I will say I spoke to someone about and it does seem to be getting better which brings me to the menu many days u don't get what it says like this morning said omelete what I got was one fried egg no omelet and tonight it said we would be having garlic bread with meal but had no bread at all and the menu items go on and on I would end up having door dash often (my choice ) I will say the people that work here are very nice but in my opinion im 73 if I was older and maybe even with or without dementia I would not recommend it unless a loved one can spend time in there visiting to make sure u get what u pay for .I could go on and on read more

UPDATED TO ADD: Later this evening we got a phone call from my mother in law. She had soiled herself and had been using her call button for HALF AN HOUR to no avail. We called the front desk and after about ten minutes someone finally picked up. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE! We were not notified that my 94 year old mother in law had tested positive for Covid until two days after the fact, even after talking to her case manager. (We were only able to talk to a case manager after chasing her down to find out the results of the weekly evaluation. No one contacted us for any updates.) This means we visited her without being able to make an informed decision about when and how to visit. It is unconscionable that we were not informed that she has covid. The facility's response was to tell us (after we were ending a visit) that they don't test again and that she's supposed to isolate for ten days. It appears that they neither attend to the patient or the visitors as far as covid exposure. Explore other options before placing your loved one here. If you expect communication about the status of your loved one, you will be disappointed and possibly even endangered. read more

My Mother was in Arbor Hills for almost 3 weeks. I would like to say good things but nothing to say good. Mom's hair was not washed entire time she was there. She was only dressed the times they knew we would be there. The committee meeting my brother and his wife attended and the day we brought her home. When we asked for assistance when she needed the bathroom took asking st least 3 different people. This happened with my brother and myself. Neither of us has a good opinion of the staff. We are missing a few of her personal items. She was drugged into a zombie. Sge has improved significantly since she is back at her care facility. read more

My Father received good care while there. I do think they really try and keep residents in bed which is not conducive to recovery after hospitalization. The one real bummer is they have a long term resident with dementia who wails all day and night it is vey unsettling. read more

Avoid this place if you truly care for your loved one. My father in law almost died in this place! He developed Sepsis after back surgery. When we visited him he was confused mumbling numbers and all crooked in his bed. I saw no food trays or drinks. He looked dehydrated. Nursing staff was oblivious and we had to have him taken by ambulance to emergency. When the paramedics arrived they said, "this place sucks!" There is no doctor on site. The on call doctor was hard to reach. I heard one guy asking where his breakfast was and it was 11:00 am. If we hadn't visited my father in law that day he most likely would've died in that place! read more

My father-in-law was admitted to Arbor Hills Friday, June 3rd late in the afternoon after a one week stay in hospital. He received attention right away from what I can only describe as a very caring staff. Literally everyone my wife and I came in contact with that were part of dad's care took time to answer our many questions and do their best to keep him comfortable. Dr. Andrew Wang was amazing! He is Arbor Hills full-time on-site doctor and I believe he made a trip there on Saturday to evaluate dad's needs. Sadly, my father-in-law was not on the road to recovery and was unable to participate in his own care so we decided to move him to a hospice home (see my review of Sharp Grossmont Hospice Parkview home). We had spoken to many people about hospice and Dr. Wang was the most knowledge professional we encountered. Malou was dad's nurse on duty for most his 5 days at Arbor Hills and she went out of her way to keep us updated on every aspect of his care. It's not hard to imagine we can't remember the names of everyone who attended to dad's needs during his stay but everyone we encountered was and are wonderful, caring and kind. read more

My mom was sent here last month, for 1 week to strengthen her legs, so she could come home. The day before she was to be released, she had a dialysis appt. My mom still had 20 min before her transportation to dialysis arrived. She wanted to use the bathroom & needed help getting on & off the toilet. A young male (dark hair, & brown eyes), showed up to help. 1st, the bathrooms in this place are NOT ADA compliant. 2nd, there are tools that help nurses lift fragile patients, like a lifting belt. Due to bathrooms not being ADA compliant, her wheelchair couldn't fit into the bathroom. My mom got up & felt like she was gonna fall. She screamed & grabbed onto the male nurse. Asshole yanks her by her arm, causing my mom extreme pain & dislocating her shoulder. Causing a huge hematoma between her shoulder & breast. My mom was in so much pain, she was asking for help. This pos takes off running out of the room, yelling "she tried to attack me, she's crazy!" If this dumb pos would've been using the lifting belt like he was suppose to, THIS WOULDVE NEVER HAPPENED. IF THE BATHROOMS WERE ADA COMPLIANT, THIS WOULDVE NEVER HAPPENED. My mom has been at Sharp for last 3 weeks & now she's battling a host of other issues that were brought on by that shitbag at Arbor Hill. How can a nursing home have bathrooms that are non ADA compliant? Why aren't your nurses/cnas trained to use lift belts when handling fragile patients? Whoever did this should be fired or at least drug tested. How tf are you gonna run down the hallway screaming "she tried to attack me, she's crazy!" After you yanked her shoulder out of the socket? My husband went from Sharp Memorial Hospital to Arbor Hills on 7/1/23. He was to receive physical therapy due to his weakened condition. The physical therapy was non existent. If he got a physical therapy aid to walk him down a short hallway he was lucky, and it wasn't even done every day. The bathrooms are not ADA compliant. We had to beg for a bedside commode because it was in storage. The staff would not answer the call light. When my husband asked for help to get out of bed, they said just pee in your diaper. My husband still has nightmares from his stay at this facility. If you care for your loved ones, do not let go to this facility. read more

My relative was sent to this nursing home on September 5th. More complications with his head began to happen. He appeared to be more agitated, doesn't eat, has trouble remembering things, dehydrated, has low blood pressure, heartbeat/pulse and is not responsive. We were then told to send him back to the hospital for surgery. His son on multiple occasions came back to the nursing home to pick up his clothes and staff refused to give them back. It is proper protocol to label the resident's clothes and double check where their personal belongings are being sent to. I tried to call the social administrator there and left a voicemail, just to never hear back from them. This is very unprofessional and negligent. My relative's clothes and shoes were brand new. He should be able to receive them back after his stay at the nursing home. I would appreciate if someone can contact me as soon as possible to resolve this issue. read more

No I don't recommend this place for Physical therapy or rehab. After 7 days returned to hospital with respiratory infection did not return to facilities for further caretaking instead hired care taker to come to my house part time at $25 per hour. read more

If you can avoid this place, please do! My Mom was discharged here for Sharp Hospital. I took her out of there and brought her home after 11 hours. The staff was very nice, but my main complaint is that the place is under staffed. Another patient was out of bed and in the hallway asking for help to go to the bathroom. Staff just ignored the elderly lady and another staff member just walked past right past her. I had to stop her the nurse and tell that the lady was out of her room and needed help. The patient was in a hospital gown and a diaper, nothing else, not even slippers. Mom had no medication because the pharmacy was closed by the time she arrived. The call bells went on for hours. January 8th was my mom's 80th Birthday and due to covid I couldn't come and celebrate this special day with her. With the help of activities director, Marie Lou, Ester, and the rest of the staff they pulled of a wonderful day for my mom. The kitchen for breakfast serviced my mom a chocolate pastry, which she loves and they had balloons and card from the Arbor Hills staff. I delivered her cupcakes and pink 80th balloons and the staff took pictures for me and sang happy birthday to my mom. Thank you guys for being heroes and heroettes on the frontlines! My husband received compassionate care at Arbor Hills and the Administration worked with me and was patient as I worked through my finances.

My 80 year old father with Alzheimer's disease was transferred here from Sharp hospital for rehabilitation to build up his strength. We visited him every day for the first 3 days, he was always alone in his room. We asked if someone could take him around some of the other patients so he would not feel so alone. They never did. On Sunday I had made plans to pick up my mother in the afternoon and stop by for an hour to visit with my father. My mother called me a little later and said that my father had just been dropped off at home by the police. Apparently my father who has dementia / Alzheimer's had simply walked out of Arbor Hills without anyone paying attention and proceeded to walk down Fletcher Parkway almost a mile until someone noticed him walking around looking confused and weak. They alerted a worker at a nearby store who called the police, luckily my father still remembers his name and because I have him in the "Take Me Home" registry at www.sdsheriff.gov they were able to pull up his info and get him home. Obviously we were quite concerned how he had managed to simply walk out of the facility without any staff intervention. When my mother called Arbor Hills, their immediate response was "Oh, we were wondering where he was." I drove to the facility to pick up my father's belongings and find out how a patient with dementia is allowed to simply walk out. The staff seemed very cautious about how they would respond to my inquiry as I was pulled into a private area away from others to discuss. They advised that their protocol is to normally put a bracelet on patients with dementia that will signal an alarm if they get near an exit. However, they never put one on my father since they said he was supposed to be in rehabilitation to regain strength. Over the few days he was there it was clear that he was capable of getting out of bed and should have been equipped with such a bracelet. I would not recommend this facility due to the lack of care, responsibility or professionalism they have demonstrated in the short time my father was in their care. read more

I just left there after two back-to-back stays. They were wonderful! The CNAs worked hard to give friendly, compassionate care. I would like to name them all, but there are too many to thank, but special props to Red (Laura), Christina, Jasmine, Malou, David, and Kaila. The PT and OT people were great, as were the nurses. The food was good, sometimes exceptional and there was always plenty of choices if you didn't like the main course. One thing I noticed, as did my visitors, was when you walk into the place, it smelled good-something you might not expect if you read other reviews. All in all, a great place. read more

My sister was taken there from Grossmont hospital. It was like waking back into 1970. Rooms were outdated and staff wasn't attentive. My sister was in 2 1/2 days before she was readmitted back to the hospital. She passed away within days. She was septic and don't believe she was getting the proper medication or care! read more

The absolute worst! I can make a hot dog taste better than anything that's been served here. I'm 50 yrs old staying here temporarily for a week for pain management from a knee replacement. If you want your prescribed medication for pain, plan on that being up to 45 min wait. The bed they have me in was probably built back in the 50's, atleast that's how old the mattress pieces are. Walking in with knee pain, walking out with back pain included. Every night screams for help are heard for atleast 30 min until any help is given. They need to update those photos big time, maybe they should take real life pictures. I'd say atleast 1/2 of the staff doesn't have a clue what there doing. The nutritionist they have is useless. Can the staff be anymore louder as they are chit chatting talking bad about patients as they are walking down the halls. Poor management definitely.. read more

I spent 3 months here in the fall of 2019 for physical therapy and rehab after spending some time in the hospital. The care and treatment I received here was exemplary - especially the PT (physical therapy) team. When I arrived, I was physically very weak from my time in hospital, and the PT team helped me get better and regain my strength VERY quickly. There were a few hiccups in daily care, but I addressed them through proper channels, and the staff was VERY responsive in addressing AND correcting the issues I had. The food was also very good, and the kitchen were quite able to accommodate my specialized dietary needs and concerns, I have no reservations in recommending this facility - especially since I have spent time in 3 other skilled nursing facilities in the past, including a few that were sub-standard in patient care. read more

My Mom had a stroke and needed a temporary nursing home to receive rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy. It tore me up to leave her in any facility. She has always been very independent and we are very close. Arbor Hills staff have been great with her. The care and therapy she is receiving is the best. Second Edit: It's been almost a year since my mom was discharged from this horrendous facility. We are celebrating. She admitted to me this evening that when she was at Arbor Hills she fell out of her bed in the middle of the night and hit her head on the floor fairly hard. She stayed on the ground for a decent amount of time before someone came in. The CNA's on duty picked her up by her feet and arms and put her bed. Apparently, the entire time they were laughing. At no point did anyone call a nurse or a doctor to examine her for injuries. The next day was "business as usual" with no nurse nor the assistants coming in to check head. She was too embarrassed to tell me that this happened. The biggest take away from our experience here with elder neglect/abuse is that she entered the facility being able to walk. She left the facility confined to a wheelchair and left to her own devices to figure it out. I am thankful that she is determined to walk again and is making progress, but when I watch her struggle to take four or five steps from her wheelchair to her couch, I wonder if we had only called a different phone number for help how much further along would she be in her recovery today. read more

My Mom was taken there and really did not get the proper care. She had her illnesses but by the time she was sent to hospice they received her with a filthy mouth and a rash from soiling herself. That does not happen after 1 time. They gave me a plan of action that would involve me caring for her (before hospice) and that panicked me and that is NOT what transpired. I felt the girls in the "care meeting " had no empathy for their patients. Just a "could care less" attitude! Although it looks nice on the outside I would not recommend it. read more

I have to commend all CNAs, LVNs, COOKS and Laundry dept. who do all of the hard, dirty and leg work that most of the time they are under appreciated. I need to mention some specific names that really took care of my husband during his rehabilitation there: LVNs - KAREN and her partner in the morning, CNAs JESSIE and NIKKO and others (ROBIN) who really are paying attention to other patients. FLOR, who made my husband laugh for the first time in a long time of her joke. The speech therapist, PAT - she's so gentle, patient and very kind to my husband's slow and slurry speech. Rachelle's team, the therapy team, also. I wish I can enumerate all names of all the employees there who are really so nice and attentive. All in all, I will recommend this facility and by giving my highest score for them is really worth it. From the admin (Fathima), front desk(Maricela, Ken & Diane), Dr. Wang and of course his team, APRIL - she's one of the best. April assisted me until the day my husband was released. She ordered all of equipments and needed medicines to take home for my husband's in- home services. I also have to thank, MALOU, who explained everything in details on how to administer my husband's medicines on my own. All in all, five stars is my verdict to them. read more

My grandfather was admitted 2 1/2 weeks ago for rehabilitation after he was hospitalized at Sharp for a week for pneumonia. From the moment we've walked in the facility, staff had welcomed us with open arms. I've learned that most staff have been there for a long time. A few nurses that I've talked to have been there for 20+ years. That says a lot right there. They have in-house physician that rounds daily. Wow! Their rehab team is also amazing! Beware of this place - it's puzzling where they got their "5 stars" from - maybe how much PROFIT they make? 1. whole place smells like urine and feces 2.
