When I made the decision that I was going to begin, I did a lot of research on different studios and instructors before I landed on Page Music Lessons. They are located on Newbury St which was extremely convenient (right off of Hynes Convention Center T Stop), they have great hours (which is important for me as a working professional) and their staff has excellent reviews from past and current students (would recommend reading these on their website, as it helped me to determine which instructor I wanted to work with). When I began taking lessons, I shared with my instructor, Pierre, that I was completely new to musical instruments - I didn't even know the difference between notes. He was extremely patient with me and started at the basics. Since this time, I have grown so much in both my ability to play and my knowledge of musical theory. In addition to teaching me classical pieces, Pierre allows me to bring pieces that I'm interested in learning to lessons and helps me to break them down. Not only has this been fun (would 100% recommend learning Just a Friend by Biz Markie on piano and whipping it out at your next social gathering), but really helps me to understand the theory side of music and how it can be applied to all different genres and time periods. With COVID, I have had some life changes and moved from Boston to the west coast. The studio and Pierre have been extremely flexible and understanding, helping me to move my lessons to a date and time that work for my new schedule and time zone. I've studied with music teachers privately and in university all my life and Aljoša is among the best. He takes the responsibility of transmitting musical technique and interpretation very seriously while also making the process fun and lighthearted. There is no contrivance or unnecessary exercises. His analogies always pay off with helping me refine my playing. They are easily applied and show immediate benefit. Even inside the lesson one analogy or direction will improve my playing right there and I won't need to take it on faith that it'll help. Working on my own then is a process of integrating and making that direction automatic. I never feel like I have to believe it'll work out while struggling to feel or see it for a while. There is no need to labor over anything and it all feels very fun. He easily meets you at your level of interest and commitment. When you want to get as much as you can out of the lessons he will match you there. While I have been playing various instruments my whole life I haven't studied piano too much before him beyond a year of study in college. Despite me being an adult beginner, Aljoša takes me very seriously and is clearly interested in seeing me progress. In my experience usually teachers at his level of mastery over the instrument only teach advanced students who they think are worth helping. I attempted to study from some online sources before without much success. So I decided to search for a private tutor. I found Joyce because of the impressive reviews on Yelp. She turns out to be an amazing teacher, even better than I expected! Very patient with me and has a way of pointing out my mistakes without making me feel discouraged. I've been taking classes from her about once a week for half a year now. I can now play a dozen songs without difficulties and sight read music at a reasonable speed. I was worried that I won't be able to keep practicing on a day-to-day basis because of my busy work and life. But the enjoyment and encouragement her lessons provide keep me on track. I never thought this would happen -- but I would look forward to the daily 30mins I set aside to play piano. She is also very accommodating to my ever changing work schedule.
