Boris provided amazingly detailed consultation on the process he'd use to replace the right arm rest's broken shock mounts, but also disassemble the chair to examine if other portions may have been overly stressed such as the rear shock mounts. He also gave advise on the proper way to lift and transport the chair, the best ways to sit on and then exit the chair, and recommended the best leather cleaner conditioner for us to order. He estimated the number of days it would take to repair our 1975 Eames chair and was right on the dot! It is easy to tell that Boris is a true craftsman when it come to these Eames chairs!

And I admit, I put a lot of wear and tear on it as well. The finish had many water stains, scratches, and dents but what was worse - the drawers inside were unusable. I couldn't get them open or closed. But in January 2024, I used Lugg to haul it to Boris and he transformed it into magnificence. Unbelievable. Beautiful. Fast forward to this fall, I had an antique desk that I'd picked up off the street about 20 years ago. Its finish was so bad, I just painted some ugly red marble finish over it. Many coats. Then I put glass over the top. I had it like that for 20 years. It wasn't ok, but first the glass cracked and when I tried to remove it, it stuck to the paint and wrecked the surface. Plus being near a window, there was much sun damage. So I took it to Boris and he worked his magic, restoring it to its original walnut finish. I simply cannot believe how beautiful it is. I had no idea it's wood was so nice, So in conclusion, YES, I highly recommend this business. Be willing to wait 4-6 weeks, buts what you will get back is really something to treasure. Thank you Boris!

I sent photos of the damaged area and asked for an approximate price. I completely understand that…read morethe final price can only be determined after an in-person inspection, but I just wanted a general price range to know what to expect, since I have no idea how much this type of repair normally costs. Instead of giving me even a rough estimate, they kept sending me appointment times. I explained that I'm in another city and didn't want to drive two hours without knowing whether the repair might cost $300, $500, $800, or $1,000. After I explained this, they again simply sent me available appointment times, almost like a scripted response. Unfortunately, the communication was not helpful, so I decided to look for another company.

The repairman was able to come out, he spread blankets out to cover my floor and ensure the dust wouldn't get all over the place. He estimated repairs would take about two hours, but it was done in one. He even reinforced the leg to make sure it wouldn't collapse like it had before. (It had very ambitiously been stapled into place and it's a miracle it lasted as long as it did.) He was even able to put a new dust cover into place since the previous one had gotten shredded by the leg and then my cat. There was no mess left when he was done, and he walked me through every step as he was working. 10/10, definitely recommend. I also booked an heirloom coffee table to be picked up and refinished. I cannot wait to see it come back to life like my armchair did.

He is prompt and communicates his status well. He delivered the furniture in new condition! It looks great. Mark is an expert at restoration. He takes time and care to do it right. I am sure I could have gotten someone with less experience to do the job for less, but I got the best overall deal and his work is impeccable! Perfect job and top notch professional. Vast knowledge of the industry. He's a nice, friendly man that is trustworthy and does excellent work

Meyer came to our home to look at a 25-year-old quartersawn oak sideboard whose drawers had swollen…read moreover the years making them difficult to pull in and out. Meyer inspected the sideboard, tried to get the drawers out but gave up after several minutes of pulling on the drawers. He said he needed to move the sideboard to his shop (with our help!) and that there was a good chance he'd have to first break the drawers removing them prior to repairing. He said he wouldn't give us a quote unless we gave him $180 for the time he spent inspecting the sideboard (which we are sorry we did); even so, we never did get a quote for the repair. We did get a dirty 2 inch block of beeswax for the money, though, that he told us to rub on the drawers and to get back to him. While Meyer was here, he was often rude and condescending when speaking of his experience and knowledge of working with wood furniture. We found another furniture restorer who came to our house and repaired our sideboard in place after about 4 hours of planing and sanding. He was absolutely awesome. We hate to write a negative review, but this person richly deserves it and we felt we should warn others who may be victimized.

Bay Area Restoration

I have used Bay Area Restoration's services twice now and very pleased with all projects…read more The first project was a bit of remodeling of my parents' grandmother clock, which doesn't work any longer, but I am sentimental about it and wanted to keep it and make use of it in another way (storage). Al and his crew removed the glass front and replaced it with a solid panel of wood and perfectly matched it to the clock. You would never know that it had been something else before. The second project, just completed, was a perpetual trophy my son won and keeps for a year. It has been in sad condition for some time. The wood base was cracking at the seams and had warped so it was rocky. The "loving" cup which sits atop the base was dented and one of the handles had broken off (not by my son! ;-). It's 33 years old and has been through a lot of hands. First, Al recommended Biro and Sons silversmiths in San Francisco to repair the cup portion of the trophy. I brought it there and they fixed the poor trophy so it looks as if it never had a dent or broken handle. They were fantastic and very pleasant there. I brought the repaired cup back to Bay Area Restoration and they fixed the wood base and attached the cup in such a way that it will NEVER come loose and fall again! That is undoubtedly how the handle broke before and the cup was dented. It looks SO good now. They charged a reasonable fee for each project and finished the projects in a timely manner. They are very nice people and, as a bonus and if you are lucky, Stella the dog might be in the shop. She's a very sweet dog!

During the intial visit he talked a good game, although it was difficult to be around him due to an overpowering cigarette stench. Then he came back with a co-worker to do repairs onsite. He did properly re-align molding on one piece that was displaced by the movers, but to repair scratches and gouges on other surfaces he indiscriminately sprayed tinted laquer that bonded to and damaged the otherwise pristine original surface. I was subsequently told by another refinisher that it would cost more than $2,000 to undo the damage that Val had done to the surface. On a different piece he reglued a spire that had broken off leaving a very visible crack line, but he considered the job finished by whipping out the spray lacquer again, this time leaving a huge overspray landing on the wall I had just painted the week before. He was messy and unprofessional. Maybe he was a different person when he earned the earlier reviews that sing his praises. Maybe he's lost his skills over the years. Regardless of the reason for the mess he made on my job, RUN!!!

Kanika Design - Los Altos hill home remodel and kitchen remodel

Kanika Design

Kanika is an extremely talented designer, and I can't recommend her enough!…read more We bought a house in March 2020 - signed the contract days before covid stay at home orders. My husband and I then spent two years working from home together in our front room (we call it the study now) without any rhyme or reason, just putting our desks wherever they fit, because it all happened so quickly. It was awkward and ugly, cords and monitors everywhere, and not a great look for people walking in our front door. The whole time, I was thinking, "when this is done and at least one of us goes back to the office, I want to make this room into a nice space to read and relax, and also to WFH when I have to." That's where Kanika comes in. I tried changing the place up on my own, but every choice I made seemed to make my space uglier and more awkward. It was time to hire a professional. That decision was worth every penny. In the end, my project turned out to be slightly bigger than just one room. I enlisted Kanika's help in choosing flooring, baseboards and paint for the whole house, furniture for my entire downstairs (we were still using the old living room furniture left by the previous owners), and light fixtures throughout. She was easy to work with and understood immediately what I was going for. My study is a real showstopper now - the walls are this deep blue color that looks amazing, she designed a gorgeous custom bookshelf that makes perfect use of the space, and she picked a couch that is the perfect size, just the right color, and so comfortable. And we still managed to get a desk in there for those WFH days. Literally just the other day, I was on a Zoom with someone and thought "this room behind me is so pretty, it looks like a fake background." But it's real, and in my house! And it wouldn't have happened without Kanika. The paint color she helped me pick for my bedroom is something I never would have chosen on my own, but I still regularly think about how nice it looks whenever I go in there. Same with the color of the living room couch, I'd never have found it on my own, but now that I have it, I love it. She knows her stuff. Kanika's husband Adi runs the business side of things. He managed the project, hiring contractors and keeping everything on schedule. The work was done on time, and he kept us in the loop, patiently answering any concerns or questions. And, no shenanigans with the final cost. Really, hiring Kanika Design was a great decision for us.
