My husband and I dropped off our 11 month old Cane Corso mix Chase at Certified K9 on October 15…read morefor a 4 week board and train program. We informed them at drop off that Chase has hip dysplasia and the orthopedic surgeon that is monitoring his condition wanted him to have a specific amount of exercise each day to improve his muscle tone to hopefully prevent the need for a total hip replacement. They informed us that he would be getting "plenty of exercise" during his training sessions. They let us know after a couple days that he was not eating well but that it was normal for a dog to eat less when they are stressed because of being away from home. At the end of the first week they informed us that he had lost about 5 pounds and asked us to bring some alternative foods to encourage him to eat (which we did) and they said it worked well and he was eating better. They called us on October 30 (2 weeks in) around 11 AM and said that he had diarrhea with blood in it through the night and they thought it would be best if we came to pick Chase up. We were at Cornell with our other dog at the time and wouldn't be able to be in Pulaski to pick Chase up until about 3 PM. They did several training sessions with Chase that day, including taking him to Tractor Supply for a training session, knowing that he was sick enough to call us to come pick him up 2 weeks early. When we arrived in Pulaski, we first learned how to use the E collar then the trainer brought Chase in the room. When we commented to the trainer that Chase looked thin, he said that their records showed that Chase had lost 6 pounds overall. We didn't really have time to look him over very well because we were practicing what Chase had learned in his time there. When it was time to go, the trainer remarked that "Chase's scrotum was a bit red and that was normal from sitting on the concrete floor". We brought Chase home and he still had diarrhea so we walked around the yard for a bit. At this time, we got a better look at him. We realized that he was extremely skinny; his spine and hip bones were very pronounced. He had lost a lot of muscle tone in his legs and was actually limping with his back left leg, the side with hip dysplasia. While walking around the yard, he tried to squat and urinate several times, but nothing would come out. We gave him a full bowl of water (24 oz) and he drank every drop. We refilled it a couple minutes later, and again he drank the entire bowl. We took him back outside after two huge drinks thinking he would surely need to go and he would squat to urinate and still nothing would come out. He tried dozens of times and was not able to urinate that entire night. Chase ate dinner that night and breakfast and lunch the next day before his vet appointment. The next morning Chase was drinking normally at this point (not guzzling an entire bowl at a time) but was only peeing a tiny bit. We collected a urine sample because we thought maybe he had a UTI and a fecal sample to rule out an intestinal parasite. At his vet appointment we learned that Chase had actually lost 9 pounds in the two weeks that he had been away. Our vet was not familiar with a dog's scrotum being chaffed by a hard floor and said that Chase's scrotum looked like it was scaled from urine or feces being left on the skin. The vet also noticed that the webbing between Chase's toes was red which the vet also attributed to scald. Chase was in such bad shape that the vet wanted to do bloodwork to check for Addison's disease. Thankfully, that test came back negative as did the urine and fecal tests. The vet gave us some cream to put on the scrotum. Chase has been home for 12 days now and has put 7.5 pounds back on and his energy level is back to normal. His paws have healed and the limp is gone but his scrotum is still healing.

We ended up switching vets in April after an unrelated, yet also extremely negative, experience at Black Creek. Upon my GSD's first exam at the new vet on August 10, we had to schedule oral surgery. On August 18, THE NEW VET HAD TO EXTRACT 15 TEETH due to the level of decay, lesions, and bone loss that Dr. Hamblin COMPLETELY missed. I literally cried on the phone post-surgery with the new vet, as I could not comprehend how that level of tooth decay was missed in not only ONE , but TWO yearly "well checks", by Dr. Hamblin. Save yourself the heartache and do not confuse a pleasant bedside manner with a vet so egregious that she overlooked a condition this significant entirely. TWICE.

The owner is very kind and my animals received great treatment. The kennels were always clean and all the other dogs appeared well cared for. The owner even understood my occasional phone call to check up on their welfare during their stay.

There is absolutely no way that I could suggest this kennel with a good mind. I called to inquire…read moreabout the kennel and decided they seemed friendly enough on the phone and the price was right, so I would stop by for a visit. I was absolutely horrified at my findings. It was March of 2014 and the temperature that day was 19 degrees F. No one was there when I arrived, so I decided to walk along side and check out the kennels. Behind the boarding facility were three typical puppy mill-type cages - above the ground with a small wooden box for the dog to sleep in. In each cage was a beagle. No food, no water. Yes, there were water bowls that were frozen solid and obviously scratched at in an attempt to quench their thirst. All three dogs were shivering and the cages were filled with feces and frozen urine. Underneath the cages were more feces that had at one point fallen through. Absolutely despicable and unexcuseable. Note that the kennel also is a "professional breeder" of hunting dogs. I left, disgusted and made a few phone calls to find out where I would need to report these people to the authorities. I decided to go back and take pictures so that I could send them to the local Humane Society and whoever else may need them. When I went back, I walked even further to find about a dozen more dogs chained to wooden dog houses, again, with no shelter from the weather, no food bowls and only one empty water bowl which was completely out of reach for any of the animals. I thought, could this get any worse? I met the state police who promised to pay the kennel a visit and to call me with his findings. In the interim, I contacted a friend who knew the owner and was told that he worked at the local prison. Hmmm. Shortly after I got a call from the policeman who said that he found that the dogs were all taken care of and that the owner worked overnight and had not yet gotten out to feed and water the dogs that day...at 11 am. He went on to say that the dogs were given food and water earlier that morning after his shift and that the water had frozen in the interim. Absolutely no way could that have happened seeing the bowls for myself and that they had obviously been scratched at for days. The policeman said that he went into the owners home and he had paintings and pictures of his dogs throughout his house and was told that he took his hunting dogs out all of the time hunting with him and that he played with them each day. My opinion, a good example of the "Good Ole' Boys Club". If he cares for his breeding dogs this way, should you trust him with yours? Absolutely not and I'll tell you why. I spoke with my vet about my encounter and she said that they have had multiple dogs in their office for removal of porcupine quills because he has taken boarded dogs out with him to hunt in the woods behind his home. Imagine coming to pick up your pet to find that. Obviously, I chose to go elsewhere as I hope you do to. Please also consider this when looking for a hunting dog. Check your local animal shelters, Humane Society and breed-specific rescues. There are many options. Often times you can put your name on a waiting list at your local shelter or Humane Society for a specific breed and they will call you when one comes in. You can save a life for much less money and help in shutting down puppy mills that abuse animals for a dollar. As you can see I now live in New Hampshire. At the time, we were living in New York and I drove and hour and a half to visit this place.
