We used the Platinum Flight Center located at the Appleton International Airport as our departure point on our return flight to Michigan after participating in the EAA AirVenture Airshow in Oshkosh. We had flown our WWII C-47D from the Yankee Air Museum in and landed directly at Oshkosh to participate in the Warbirds displays for a couple days. Our original plan for returning was to get dropped off with our luggage near our plane when we were finished with the Airshow. Then we would take off from Oshkosh. But due to the traffic in and around the Airshow as well as complications for getting our group and our luggage to the plane for departure, our pilot decided to fly the plane from Oshkosh to Appleton International Airport which was also closer to our hotel. Then we could all meet up there to board the plane and depart for home. The air traffic was much lighter and there were virtually no vehicle traffic problems getting our group to the plane. The Platinum Flight Center at Appleton International Airport is where we met to board our plane. They operate facilities to service and fuel charters, Business flights, private planes, etc, as well as passenger services and processing. They are located on the opposite side of the airport grounds and everything looked new, clean, and well maintained. They even loaded and delivered our luggage to and onto our plane for us. Some quotes from the Platinum Flight Center EAA Information Page: "Parking is available throughout the week." "Secure ramp & tie down parking for 100s of aircraft" "Our expanded concrete ramp can accommodate a large number of aircraft" "Prices for the ramp are the same year-round - no EAA Airventure extra fees" "Platinum Flight center does not accept reservations for parking. We have more than enough room to accommodate all planes." For our first time to EAA AirVenture, we chose Platinum at ATW for the convenience and because their web page mentions the ramp, parking on the ramp, and the expanded ramp. Even though it says no reservations are needed, I called the week prior and listened to a recorded message indicating the same. Nowhere is there mention of grass parking. I think it was reasonable to infer that parking would be on the ramp. I was mistaken. When we arrived, I was surprised to be marshalled into the grass. "What about the ramp parking?" "Not for piston singles," I was told - grass was the only option. Boy, that would have been nice to know before arrival so I could have packed boards and tiedown anchors (I only had the ropes). Perhaps I'm being a crybaby not wanting to park on the grass - which is partially true - but I also think it was quite reasonable to believe paved ramp parking would be available. I think it would be to their benefit to update next years page to clearly state where and how aircraft will be parked. The rest of the experience was unremarkable. They lent us a crew car to run to the terminal to pick up our rental, and the staff was pleasant throughout. Not sure if I'll return next year, but if I do, I'll be better prepared. Edited to add that as I look at reviews on ForeFlight, it appears they did this same thing last year, so any plausible deniability is lost. read more
