Unfortunately, my Mini me thought she wouldn't like PACKHawaii because she knew nobody there. That all changed from the first day. In fact, she had such a blast! The staff, and volunteers were welcoming and knew all to well the feeling of not knowing anyone. They made it a fun and safe place for all the kids. Ms. Mini me decided to get up early everyday excited to go and practice. For summer, it was a whole day affair and she was ready to get out the door before I was up. Why couldn't she be like this going to school?! Anyway, performance day came and she was excited about her the whole show. The family came to cheer her on and we were amazed how great the show was! The stage looked amazing. In 2 weeks all the kids memorized their lines, learned choreography, stage presence, and memorized songs. It was impressive to see how much these kids learned in only 2 weeks. They even help make the stage, props, and programs. AMAZING! PACK has different programs. There is the summer programs, different shows to tryout, they have dance classes and offer various workshops for kids. It is such a great program and it is on the Westside!! Overall, It was priceless to see my mini me's confidence and excitement grow with each day. Thank you PACK for having this wonderful program available in the Westside. My daughter's new found love of performing came out because of PACK. She has gained so much and learned a lot about herself in just a few weeks. I can't wait to see what next summer will bring.

Westside Story is one of my all-time favorite "classic" movie & musical play and I must say, PACKids did this production justice! Who can resist singing along to "When you're a Jet," or "I Wanna Live in America," or even belt out, "take my hand and I'll take you there..." or "I Feel Pretty, oh so pretty!" PACKids really outdid themselves by singing, dancing and acting their hearts out on stage - it was truly believable and something they can be proud to have been a part of. I know I was proud to have witnessed such a beautiful musical. It's no secret, i embrace local entrepreneurial endeavors and that affinity does not end with just my purchases. I support local talent when I can. Here in west Oahu there is not a shortage of talents and skills. PACK is a local, non-profit, after school musical theatre group that puts on 4-5 musical productions in a year. Children audition for parts and should be able to sing, dance, recite and act. It's the real deal at PACK! Since moving to west Oahu I have seen School House Rock Jr., their Christmas Holiday production, Little Mermaid and now, Westside Story. These kids are amazing!! I've seen them grow with each performance and their sets get better and better. No need to drive into town anymore to catch a play at Diamond Head, Manoa Valley or Hawaii Theatre...PACKids ROCK!!

I have always been meaning to learn the hula dances for few of my favorite songs, but you can only…read morelearn so much via YouTube videos, so I decided that on my next trip to Hawaii I would find a way to get a "one on one" lesson, and I found a fantastic one!!! A quick Google search led me to Sarah and "Wanna Hula?", and it was an awesome experience from the moment I contacted her, all the way to the end of my lesson. She was very quick with responding to my inquiries and I was able to arrange a private class for my friend and me at Magic Island. Hula on the beach...can there be anything more awesomely Hawaii than that? The meeting location was clearly indicated so it was easy to find and Sarah was even early for our lesson. She was great about offering suggestions on where to hold the class (comfort, view, etc.) and had the lyrics to all three of the songs I had inquired about printed up for us too. For the next hour, my friend and I got a dance tailored to our dancing experience/ability (I have danced on and off since I was 5 yrs old and my friend had NEVER done hula in her life) and I can't believe that we were taught an entire song in only an hour! We got the video recording add-on and Sarah provided a tripod that works with cameras and phones so it was easy to record the dance. The video is going to be so handy to review when I get back home :) I can't recommend this enough, especially since this will be much better souvenir of your vacation than a tiki doll or a pineapple mug :-P

She makes it fun for all of us to learn hula, and I think it's fascinating to learn that there are descriptions and meaning behind every move! I have personally watched Sarah teach beginners, and have them dancing, pretty good I might add, within minutes. She has great people skills and is very easy to work with. I would recommend Wanna Hula especially for beginners who may not consider themselves dancers, yet need to be 'up and dancing' in a short time. 2 thumbs up for Sarah Chang and Wanna Hula!

This is great news for all the students who struggled through the pandemic with learning how to operate Zoom video conferencing. Learning the art of hula is such a personal touchy-feely loving experience which is not easy to accomplish over Zoom. Kumu Tati did an amazing job with her Zoom classes and her love for hula was 100% evident, but it is still not like in person classes. We are so so happy to be able to be apart of Kumu Tati's awesome hula classes and would like to Thank Kumu Tati and her loving 'ohana for sharing all their wisdom and love for the art of hula

11/2025 I had the opportunity of attending Lisa Matsumoto's play Once Upon Noddah Time twice, both…read morewere matinees. This venue has been a mainstay at Leeward Community College for years and the first time I've come here since I was a student back in the day. There's plenty of parking right in front of the theater. To get to the theater there is a huge staircase to walk down or the other option is an elevator in the next building over to the left of the theater, if you're facing the theater. There are signs with arrows and easy enough to find but it is a bit of a walk because you're walking almost the full length of the other building and once you're downstairs, then need to walk the same length back to the entrance. For kupuna with arthritis issues, this can be quite the challenge. The theater lobby has a beautiful painted mural upon entering. To get to you seat, once again, everything's stairs up, then down. Women's restroom, down a short flight of stairs. The knees were practically screaming from all the stairs. The theater seats are nicely laid out and space between each row is good where one can comfortably walk to your seat without having to squeeze thru. Both times I went, we had good seats. The first time was in G12/G13, about midway and the 2nd time was seats C30/31 closer, left stage. The theater does get cold as the performance progresses so good idea to bring a jacket/sweater. The play itself was great! There was a cast of about 30, some were students and some actors with previous experience. It was a good play for the whole family with the happy musical numbers, actor interaction with the audience, and comedy. Add to the fact it was done local style with pidgin. The only problem we had was you couldn't hear a lot of the cast members no matter which seat you were at because not all of them were wearing microphones. The main characters were but some of the supporting cast that had speaking lines, you couldn't hear at all. This made it very frustrating to hear the play. I had mentioned it to the gal at the box office when I went the 2nd time. Especially at the start of the play when the bufo were speaking to the audience. I couldn't hear them at row G. Row C was better but not by much. I can only imagine folks in the seats further up couldn't hear anything at all. Overall, enjoyable play. The LCC theater is a beautiful venue with the layout of the seats. The drawbacks are too many stairs to get to your seat and hard to hear this wonderful performance.

We could not be happier we joined. Kumu Derek is an excellent instructor. The children love him and his Kokua staff who help him instruct the classes. He is fun with the children, yet teaching the meaning behind the songs and dances never escape him. He does expect the best each child can give and always starts with prayer. Hugs are a common place and the children in various classes are friendly and humble. I didn't know there was such things as clicks and mean girl syndromes in other dance groups as I have never experienced this. My oldest daughter is quit shy and introverted and she has shown initiative in the past year through her experience with this Halau. Kumu Derek and his wife Yoko are always pleasant and as busy as they are, always take a moment to say hello to all the parents and keiki. Acoustics were good and because no tickets for it, it left many of the audience standing as it was a packed house. Luckily for a 4 pm performance there was some shade on the outdoor stairs and a canopied area with some benches to wait until the doors were opened. Although we didn't have center seats since it was first come first served the view even at the end of a row was fine. Parking can be a challenge unless you come an hour early to snag a close by stall.
