Having torn the rotator cuff in my right shoulder in a work-related accident in March of this year (2017), I was advised through the WSIB procedures to find a physical therapy clinic and enter into treatment. I used no more discretion and consideration in choosing a clinic than going to the closest to my home. That was my first mistake. Upon entering the Apexx clinic, one is immediately impressed by the relaxed, homey feel of the space, which is laid out like a house rather than a cold, antiseptic clinic. The staff are warm and friendly and the atmosphere puts one at ease physically, mentally and emotionally. I'm writing this review in December 2017. After 2 8-week treatment periods covered by the WSIB and 4 weeks of treatment paid for on my own, my shoulder is insignificantly improved, I am still in a great deal of pain and I have been forced to go to another clinic. Here's why, and what I wish I had known before ever setting foot in this clinic. The impressive relaxed setting is deceiving, wherein hidden behind that easiness are many examples of a lack of professionalism. A listing with explanations should suffice to paint a clear and accurate picture. The clinic opens at 9:30am, and appointments are booked from that time. However, staff routinely wander in casually as late as 10:15, by which time the lineup of patients usually fillls up the waiting area. Because of my work schedule, my only option for appointment times was 9:30am, with a very narrow window left to get to work on time after treatment. Too many times to count, my treatment was delayed by sometimes as long as 20-30 mins, because of the lack of staff. This leads to the second point. The clinic is seriously understaffed for the amount of patients it has and is consistently overbooked, leading to a whole list of problems. Treatment sessions that should last an hour can take up to 1.5 hrs. You may be forced to wait up to 15 mins between, say, an ultrasound treatment and a massage, because staff are busy running around amongst the too many patients they have and can't take care of all at once. The physiotherapist, Andre Kong, is also the one who runs the clinic, has no dedicated administration staff, and is constantly distracted during treatment, or actually has to interrupt it, to deal with administrative issues; so that I as a patient was rarely getting the proper focus and attention in my treatment. Because of overbooking and understaffing, oftentimes my treatment session was cut short with the excuse that there simply wasn't any staff to be able to treat me. In my second 8-week treatment period, the massage therapy, which was the most essential part to treating my injury, was rendered to me less than 5 times out of 24 treatment sessions, and never a full massage, usually barely enough time to get started before the massage therapist is taken away by the physiotherapist and sent to work on another patient. While part of my treatment was to include strength training to build strength in the muscles surrounding the injury, and while the clinic is equipped with free weights and machines, NOT ONCE in all my treatments did I undergo any strength training. The best the physiotherapist could do was to print off a ream of sheets with relevant strengthening exercises on it and telling me to do them at home on my own time. Because I have better ways to spend the rest of my day, I won't even go into detail about repeated inappropriate advances of a sexual nature by a particular massage therapist during therapy; the preponderance of inexperienced, non-paid community college interns rendering treatment at a clinic where they outnumber the regular staff; the physiotherapist who insists on being addressed as "Doctor" even though he has no professional right to do so, and who, when asked questions related to my injury, routinely seemed more keen on showing off his physiological knowledge with long lectures that may or may not have answered the questions asked; the dog belonging to the physiotherapist's mom, often present in the clinic while patients are being treated; the overt discrimination displayed by the physiotherapist towards intern staffers who were of either Middle Eastern or South Asian descent. In sum, in addition to my own example of 20 weeks of treatment with very little result, I can offer yet another: attending the clinic during the same time as I, was a car accident patient in a great deal of pain. At the beginning of my treatment, he was arriving at the clinic under his own steam. By the time I left the clinic, he was barely hobbling into the clinic with the assistance of a walker. Thanks to my physiotherapist Jane, Dr Kong, and the rest of the team here I have recovered extremely well from a car accident where I injured my hip at the back close to my tail bone from being rear ended as a passenger. I went from limping and feeling pain in my hip and back when sitting for only a few minutes to being able to go back to doing Muay Thai and hitting the gym at full throttle. As long as I don't overdo it physically, I'm good and feel no pain or discomfort. If I overdo it and it's cold outside then I'll feel a bit of discomfort but for the most part I'm fine. I had told my personal trainer at the gym who was doing a fitness assessment that I had been in a car accident, and she thought I had a great physiotherapist since I showed little issue for someone who had been injured, and I was thinking "Yes! You're right," so I thought it would only be appropriate to leave a favourable review and let the world know how great she was. I'm pretty much perfect, I just have some issues with balancing on one leg (either of them) during yoga at the gym but my balance before wasn't exactly amazing, and I see others in the class struggling with balance too so I don't feel handicapped in any way, but it is something I will work on, likely with a trainer. This was my first experience with physiotherapy and I'm a true believer. I can't thank this place enough for giving me my life back. read more

This company is so unprofessional I do not even know where to start. At first they assess you. When this took place there were several people in the room and several people kept coming in and out. I was in allot of pain so this was very stressful being this was my first time there. At the end of the session they stated that had to come in tow times per week and no diagnosis was ever given. This visit cost $80.00. They immediately booked me in stating I needed this multiple treatments but never staing why or what my injury was. They did state that I was not able to do any kind of work outs for at least 3 weeks. The 2nd appointment was at 6:00 p. m. which i rushed to from work. I then sat there for over 20 minutes aft er the appointment time. This 2nd time they had an assistant look after me. She placed the electrical currents onto areas but the electrical current fell off one area so I did not receive treatment efficiently. When cashing out paying for my service I heard the doctor state to his employees that the patients do not control their visit but that the company does. I though this highly unprofessional since people are paying for their visits and should be able to book when they want as they have time to come in. The person paying should be able to pick and choose what works for them. Every appointment after started late. So unprofessional and no explanation even when you rushed there from work to be ontime. One time the doctor actually asked me as they were taking my $ if I had been to other Physio places. I had stated no. When you are in a room you can hear everything. One of my late started appointments as I could hear everything I heard the doctor slaying we are all leaving at 7:00 meanwhile I had as I stated had my session started late so I felt hurried and that again I would no receive full treatment. At no time in any of the session was there a second consultation to discuss how I was progressing. All this company seems to want to do is get people in and out and collect the money. They pretend to care and I say pretend but do not follow up at any time or discuss your progression or any information letting you know we will start here and do this or whatever in any kind of explanation or treatment description. They do though make sure you book ahead and pay even if your session was shorter than the expected timeline. This leads to the second point. I want to clarify in my last review I stated doctor Kong also was a physiotherapist. He actually is a chiropractor that carries physiotherapy certifications. Nonetheless I still like this Rehab Center although my particular pain issues may be more tricky to treat then I first anticipated. read more

After minor injuries from a car accident, I was referred to Apexx by my insurance company. Initially, I was surprised when Apexx insisted on 2 appointments a week. I was not that injured. The machines they used on me didn't seem to do much, but the physiotherapist (Jane) was really good. The number of students seemed disproportionate as one other patient review on this site pointed out. The appointments always took way longer than an hour and it constantly threw my schedule off. After a month of visits, at my last visit, Dr. Kong approached me in the "waiting hallway" which is filled with a line of chairs with other patients waiting for their service. In front of everyone he started asking questions about my health plan, the patients could clearly hear his discussion with me as there are only curtains between treatment spaces, I was shocked! I said to him "Could we please talk about this in private?" His response was that the only private room was the bathroom!!! What person who calls himself a "doctor" would discuss private information with a patient in a public place? To add insult to injury (no pun intended), when I offered to pay the bill there and then, he made the comment to me that I could not afford the bill. I asked him how he could presume to know what I could or could not afford (all of these treatments are covered by my insurance companies). He had no answer. By now I was so embarrassed I left the office and he followed me onto the sidewalk. To his credit, after I pointed out how unprofessional he had been, he apologized to me. But too little, too late. Needless to say, I never returned. After my experience, I would not recommend this clinic. In my opinion it felt more like a cash grab to get maximum money from my insurance companies. Thank you very much to the best therapist you could find; Dr. Kong and his team. I had a huge car accident that the front of the car blew off and the mechanic said that the car cannot be fixed, but Dr. Kong fixed me very well. It has been more then 6 years since I stop the physiotherapy and I am doing very well. I still keep in contact with him because I bring all my friends that need physiotherapy and they are all very happy with the service they got. read more
