When I visited this incredible organization recently, Paula, one of the cofounders of the Apex Protection Project, shared this sober fact with our group: it is quite possible that wolves will become extinct during our lifetime. Wolves have an ominous reputation: Vicious. Violent. Bloodthirsty. Villainous. Think of the fairy tales we grew up with...Little Red Riding Hood...The Three Little Pigs. The bad guy? The wolf. The image of a wolf devouring helpless little children and animals gets seared in our brains from a very early age. Paula and Steve, the founders of Apex, want to shatter that image. Part of their mission is to teach others about the gifts wolves offer to humanity. And they do that by offering incredible educational experiences to the public. I participated in one of these experiences, an opportunity to meet and hike with their pack, which includes seven wolves and wolfdogs. This experience also included a light dinner and a outdoor soundbath with one of the wolves, Kona, in attendance. Feeling his soft nuzzle on my face during the soundbath was an experience I'll never forget. One of the first things Paula and Steve did was to show us how to interact with the wolves and wolfdogs upon entering their enclosures. I was a little nervous at first. One of the first wolfdogs I met, Sarge, approached everyone in our group and gave out plenty of kisses. My nervousness immediately evaporated. In fact, the entire pack is incredibly sweet and lovable. It truly is an extraordinary experience. Sarge's story will remind you of the good that still exists in this world. He was rescued by Paula and Steve after his leg was severely injured in a fall. The family that owned him couldn't afford surgery and he was at risk of being euthanized. Paula and Steve, along with a donor named Barbara, arranged for Sarge to receive treatment which included his leg being fitted with a titanium plate so it could properly heal. You will fall in love with Sarge for his affectionate nature and grit. I sure did. Hiking with the pack was unforgettable. The scenery is gorgeous, but even more gorgeous is watching the pack frolic and run on the open land. Omg. The soundbath was conducted by Kirsten Korot. It was such a tranquil experience hearing Kirsten play her instruments outdoors on a chilly evening in the desert. And like I said, I was lucky to have Kona approach me during the soundbath. It's really difficult to put into words how moving that was. Just before the soundbath, as the sun was slowly starting to set, we watched the pack howl. That sound and its acoustics will touch you to your core. If you can, try this experience! Learn more about wolves, defy stereotypes, experience nature, meet some extraordinary people whose passion in protecting wolves and wolfdogs will move and inspire you. Learning and interacting shatters fear and ignorance, and I think that in today's world, we need that more than ever. Check out Apex Protection Project's website to learn more about their mission and to sign up for one of their hikes. I highly recommend it. You won't regret it. It's powerful, moving, and good for the soul.

Critical work for the world and humanity. When all the animals are gone, so will humans be.
