The shave ice itself was refreshing and hit the spot, especially on a warm North Shore day. The only thing that wasn't our favorite was the mochi balls. You almost don't see Aoki's Shave ice unless you were looking for it. It is hidden back on the side of their store. We were told to go there instead of the place across the street. The guys behind the counter couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. They did an amazing job with my wife's shave ice. There are picnic tables to sit and enjoy your treat at. It's been 29.5 years since I've last had a shave ice from Aoki, and I still have their t shirt from back then as well. They've moved locations since I was last here. I made the long drive from Waikiki today to see the north shore and indulge in an Aoki shave ice. I went back to my roots and had the Volcano with ice cream. My wife had the Northshore. Aoki is located on Kamehameha Hwy in a little red building tucked behind the north shore trading company. The Aoki shave ice was as delicious as I remember it. Nice shave to the ice and delicious flavored syrups. The outdoor seating was a nice touch from the old building. The staff was friendly and the shave ice was made quick. Not sure if they need to sharpen their blades, but the shave ice at Aoki's in Haleiwa was more icy snow cone texture. We'd driven up from Waikiki to try it as an alternative to the touristy Matsumoto's only to be pretty disappointed. I usually pick my flavors individually but decided I would try one of Aoki's famous flavors. I appreciated that their famous flavors didn't have ice cream in them because I just don't get the hype of ice cream in shaved ice. I got the North Shore shaved ice (mango, lilikoi, guava, & a splash of Li Hui Ming) and my spouse selected a trio of blueberry, raspberry, and lilikoi. We both loved our shaved ices. To this day I do NOT understand why people would wait in a(n unjustifiably long) line across the street when this little gem serves up shave ice that's every bit as good. Holy smokes does this place blow the rest of the shaved ice places we tried out of the water! My husband asked some locals where the best shaved ice was and we were told Aoki's so we headed straight over. There was a bit of a line but it was all worthwhile. Service was great- very patient and gave great recommendations. No indoor seating, but they do have some tables outside. You know what? I'm so grateful for this quiet, and assuming location right across the other shave ice place. They can hold their own for sure. And people should opt for Aoki's. They have a little sitting area for families and groups of friends. Their prices are awesome - $4 for smalls. We had four small shave ice which were pretty substantial in our opinion. Cannot go wrong with strawberry and ice cream. Little extra cost ($1.50) for the extras like ice cream and azuki beans. Ice cream addition was a $1. They served us fast. The ice was fine. Out of the two shaved ice shops in the area, Aoki's is our preferred! Shorter lines, homemade syrups, and ice cakes! Our local colleagues also much prefer Aoki's. All the flavors are great and toppings are good as well. I am partial to anything with li hing mui so that's what I gravitate towards! There is a small seating area with snow cone stands as well to make for easier eating, especially for kids. We also really like the ice cakes they sell at the retail store at the front. This place is literally a stone's throw away from Matsumoto and yeah, I wasn't about to wait in the long lines for Mat's shave ice. I had them before and wanted to show Aoki some love. They have lush and leafy greenery, picnic benches with umbrellas and tiny green geckos to greet you. Their syrups are homemade and you can get unique flavaflavas such as melona, ube, and green tea. They also have ice cream, sorbets and shave ice shakes. I went with one of their famous flavaflav combos, The North Shore, which includes mango, lilikoi, guava with li hing mui sprinkled on top. I added mochi for that bounce and chewiness. I got the small and it was the perfect size for two people to share. Their shave ice was indeed soft, pillow-y and hella fine but it does start to group together and get icy after awhile. You could really taste each flavor and all were very delishness. Refreshing and perfect for a hot and humid day. The shave ice comes in a cone within a plastic flower cup to catch them drips and they have custom plastic holder for the table so you can enjoy your shave ice without having to hold it. Overall, good variety of flavaflavs, good ice consistency and service was fast. Check them out if you don't feel like waiting. After seeing the line for Matsumotos we decided to run across the street to Aoki's shave ice. I am so glad we did!! It was good! Short line, seating, very reasonable prices, and shade, what else could you ask for?! I ordered a lychee, guava, and lilikoi with added mochi. It was so refreshing! The lilikoi might've been my favorite, perfectly tart and sweet. The lychee was so subtle it snuck up on me. The guava was very noticeable, very sweet but so good too.
