We were surprised how freely we were allowed to just walk around this building wherever we wanted!…read moreIt had really pretty architecture but it seemed like a school library, so we weren't exactly sure what this place was. We stumbled across a gorgeous dark wood traditional library room on the second floor of the front entry staircase which was gorgeous!!

The Biblioteca Nacional (translated National Library) is a beautiful building both inside and out. It is free to enter and sometimes has art exhibits. When I first visited there was an excellent photo display of old Santiago. There is a little cafe located right inside the library on the first floor. Naturally you can't take your coffee with you through the stacks however the cafes are actually quite charming and you can take a break from studying and sip down a cup of joe. I highly recommend this place for anyone who needs a calm silent place to organize their thoughts or get some work done. There is a computer lab as well which is also open to the public.

There are plenty of desks and there is an outdoor courtyard at the back which is beautiful for working outdoors in the summer. There are also a row of 6 computers inside free for use. The staff are really kind. It's always full of students, working people and some seniors using the computers and reading newspapers. Love this place. Washrooms on site and a small coffee machine. Nothing special but great as a free working space.
