His dermatologist recommended Dr Gelman and another specialist in Utah. We chose California first because it was closer. Unfortunately, our experience was INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING! My husband was experiencing severe scrotal lymphedema that continued to worsen despite seeing multiple doctors before we met with Dr Gelman. During our appointment with Dr Gelman, we spent approximately 45 minutes being told that his weight was the problem. Grabbing his belly, calling him fat. COMPLETING HUMILIATING. Told him he needs to get gastric bypass, then maybe we could talk about surgery. What made this even more frustrating was that Dr Gleman has published research and treated patients with much larger cases of scrotal lymphedema, including the patient featured on TLC with a 132 pound scrotum!! My husband was nowhere near that size, yet we were told his weight was the issue and no effort was made to determine the underlying cause of his lymphedema. As we later learned, obesity was NOT the cause of his condition. We later learned that the underlying problem was severe lymphatic dysfunction. His lymphatic system was not properly draining the fluid from the area, which caused the progressive buildup of fluid, inflammation, and tissue. His condition was much more complex than simply being overweight like Dr Gelman blamed the cause on. A little while after his appointment with Dr Gelman, he developed cellulitis that progressed to sepsis where his kidneys began to shut down. We had just switched insurance plans and happened to be in a 15 day coverage gap leaving us with approximately $50,000 in medical bills. He had never spent a single night in a hospital before. Imagine this never would've happened if Dr Gelman actually wanted to help look for a solution instead of being fatphobic. We saw the second specialist at University of Utah who IMMEDIATELY said, "We need to fix this." He immediately recognized the severity of the condition, fought through the insurance hurdles with us, and performed surgery. Looking back, it's heartbreaking to think about how much suffering, time, and money might have been prevented if we had received a more thorough evaluation and a willingness to investigate the cause instead of attributing everything to weight. I would never recommend Dr Joel Gelman.

I started having excruciating pain a little over two months ago and was certain it was a kidney stone since I had them about 15 years ago and it's a pain you don't forget. I was referred to Dr. Patel and I am so grateful I found him. He's the most understanding, caring, kind and knowledgeable doctor I've dealt with when it comes to stones. He takes his time with you and educates his patients in great detail on how to prevent future kidney stones and walks you through the process every step of the way. Unfortunately, I had 2 stones. One that took me almost 2 weeks to pass. I ended up needing lithotripsy for the other, which I had done last week. He kept me informed on the process every step of the way which helped with any fears I had. He had me bring the stone I did pass back to him so the lab could determine what it was made of to help prevent future stones. He also had me do a 48 hour urine collection to assist with stone prevention. He made sure to educate me on what changes to make in my diet to assist with stone prevention and taught me how important hydrating is. I hate drinking water and love drinking soda but I now understand the impact that these habits have on my body. He truly cares about getting his patients stone free for life and is extremely empathetic about the excruciating pain these nasty rocks cause. He's also just an all around great guy and has an amazing bedside manner. I also have to say that his nurse, Lariza is absolutely AMAZING!!!!! She's extremely caring and attentive. She called me back every time I had a question or concern and always made sure my mind was at peace when I had concerns about anything I was going through. I'm finally at the tail end of this whole ordeal and starting to feel like myself again and I'm beyond grateful to have had both Dr. Patel and Lariza help me through this process. While this is not something anyone wants to go through, having Dr. Patel and Lariza's support during this time will make it easier. I know this firsthand!

I wanted to be seen by a specialist so that I could possibly get more ideas on staying healthy and preventing problems in the future. Also, I wanted to make sure nothing else was going on. This doctor was not very empathetic and he did not really take notes on my symptoms. Most doctors I have seen lately type everything you say into their system. He barely wrote anything. He also stated very early in our conversation that he thought my symptoms were due to stress and were not due to any other issue. I told him about the urgent care tests and he still seemed very unconvinced. Now it is two weeks later and the test they ran showed the same results as the urgent care. I am thoroughly disappointed that a doctor would dismiss my symptoms as stress or in my head. This is a very dangerous practice since some people may have more serious issues that are being dismissed only to become worse without treatmebt. I had a real issue that needed medication and he was ready to ignore my symptoms. I will not be returning to this doctor and I will be finding another doctor that will listen and be empathetic.
