He was making a lei while I browsed around and as I paid for my merchandise and got gifted a Pualeikinini lei, I was touched by his kindness. I love the fragrant smell of this flower. I didn't expect that and grateful that the flowers are in season. Just walking around exploring this part of town, I am so glad I made a stop at this shop before my lunch reservations, it was around the corner. I loved looking at the antique and vintage stuff, some items did bring back some memories of small kid times but some were quite interesting to look at. One item caught my eyes, saw a mini cute sewing machine which I had to get for my mom, it reminded me of her ( she had a sewing machine just like it). I was surprised at the price and Kelii even packaged the items up so nicely. My mom was so happy when she opened it, thank you for doing this! The Kicknackery ( cute name btw) is a unique store located in downtown Hilo, that sells a variety of items including: Antiques, vintage collectibles, souvenirs, & quirky knick-knacks. It was meant to be stopping by at the Knickknackery, make a stop here You would never know what interesting, unusual items, one of a kind treasures, you might find or browse to discover hidden gems!

This is more of a traditional knickknack store than true antiques; everything is dirty and most of it isn't worth the prices. I asked the cashier if they had anything I was looking for and got a stupid grin and a shake of the head like those were ridiculous requests. I took a walk around looking through everything and didn't notice a lot of local flavor or anything unique. I definitely have to put the emphasis on the "and Stuff" part of the name.

But with a keen eye you'll see a vintage surfboard hanging on the wall next to a sign that reads, "Antiques". I wasn't looking for anything in particular, nonetheless I was a curious cat so I veered on in. It was like stepping back in time. Think about any decade and you'll find something cool. The atmosphere is kinda like going to your grandparents house, patina with a sprinkle of dust. And throughout every corner you'll discover some randomly distinctive knickknacks. Everything I saw was an awesome deal and you definitely find items of value. A few things that caught my eye and sent me back were the collectable toys, coins, guitars, skateboards, furniture, kitchenware, glasses, and of course the vintage records. My personal favorite was a record of "Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon." As the nostalgia echoed memories from my past an hour maybe two flew bye, and yet I could have spent the rest of my afternoon there lost in time. The keeper of this treasure chest is Ray. He's a super chill dude with a great sense of humor and plenty of talk story too. Ray knows his stuff and can tell you anything you need to know about anything you find in his treasure chest. A famous Captain named Jack Sparrow once said, "Not all treasure's silver and gold, mate."

Even if you aren't looking to buy, it's a very pleasant experience to browse in-store.

Closed Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. $15 fee for loading assistance but many of the pieces could be moved with a friend or on your own if they are the right size/shape. Tim checked us out and was very sweet and helpful getting us squared away. Ron was so kind and helped load items, providing cardboard to keep things from bumping into one another. On July 18th 2023 I went into the bamboo & teak furniture store in Hilo to pick up a table and…read morechairs for a friend that I had referred. The friend that purchased the furniture told them I would be down that morning to pick it up. When I got there, I made contact with a female employee that had been cruising around on an electric scooter. The female employee told me that the table was in a storage bay at the end of the building and the chairs were in a shipping container on the other end of the parking lot and that there was a $15 loading fee. I told her that my two daughters and I could load the furniture if she could bring it out. Her and another employee went down to the bay where the table was, and removed it from a stack of tables and set it just outside the bay door. She said here you go and again told me the chairs were in the shipping container at the other end of the parking lot, before walking away. We carried the table the entire length of the building back to my truck and then had to retrieve all six chairs from the shipping container. After loading all of the furniture, I found the female employee wandering around the store with what appeared like nothing to do except trying to look busy. We were the only customers there and the parking lot was empty. I asked her if the owner of the business was around. She told me that he wasn't working that day and rudely asked what I needed. I calmly explained that from a customer point of view, I shouldn't have to gather all of the furniture that was ordered. I told her that I felt that the furniture should've been in one area for me to load up. I also told her that I had never had a furniture company charge to help wrap and load furniture. She told me she was too busy to help me wrap and load, yet wasn't helping any other customers and to me was just wandering around trying to look busy. She told me that she didn't have time to baby every customer that comes into the store, and that we were lucky to even have a place to shop for furniture. She also told me they barely survived Covid. I told her that over the last year I had easily spent several thousand dollars and referred many people to their business and from a customer point of view this wasn't the proper way to treat customers. She told me that she didn't care and didn't need my money. I told her that if Covid hadn't taken them out of business, her attitude surely would. I also told her she shouldn't act like they are the only furniture store on the island because there are other places to shop. She told me good, shop somewhere else. I assured her that I would be shopping elsewhere and would be speaking to the owner. During my conversation with her I never raised my voice or got rude yet she was very rude and repeatedly interrupted me while I was speaking. I made several attempts to contact Mike the owner and never received a call back. I don't know what happened to this business. It used to be awesome you would buy furniture, they would have it wrapped and ready for you they would help you load it and often I would give them 10 or $20 as a tip. I try and support local businesses anytime that I can, but when treated like this by an employee, I will not go back and will not recommend them to anyone.

There were items under the Christmas tree that were on sale, so I grabbed some of those. The owner Napua knows all of the companies whose products she sells, and while I was visiting, an aunty who makes lauhala products came in. Such a delight! I picked up some fruit gels, lotions, chili pepper water/sauce, toffee, soap, and even an adorable pair of earrings made from recycled materials shaped like the Big Island. Prices were reasonable, and the owner is Native Hawaiian. Nalani Farm Store is tucked away behind KTA and the farmers market, but is easily findable using any map app. I'll be back!
