I like the Dickie's "cell phone pants" - thusly named for weird cell phone sized pockets in the right pant legs. It was only $15 for pairs in oddball colors, just like the last time I was here and bought an orange pair. I was tempted to go for a sky blue pair this time, but decided $40 on a pair of overalls was enough to drop for one day. They had a bunch of funky caps and visors by the front door, like caps with the old Pistons logo or Memphis ABA caps. You can also find socks, t-shirts and drawers here, though you might find them for a better price at Cheap Charlie's. How can you not love a clothing store that has an autographed photo of Ice T to greet you right when you walk in the door? My blood pressure drops when I walk into National Dry Goods, perhaps because I associate it with my personal cloak against uptightness - a good pair of overalls.

This place is very urban, catering to city residents, parents shopping for DPS school uniforms, and community groups buying screen printed items. That said, I was very comfortable there and was assisted by a top notch staff, including the security guy that was wearing an insulated waterproof/windproof Carhartt baseball that has become my favorite item of clothing. I love this place. It is pure Detroit.

My initial hesitation buying a suit from a place with the word depot in its name was completely unfounded. They have a huge selection of suits and honestly without assistance we would have been overwhelmed. The store always very busy but the staff did a great job of balancing giving us attention and giving us space. They helped him choose a beautiful Italian wool navy suit that he could wear to the weddings and a dark green suit (I never would have thought he could pull of that color) for the less formal events. The price was very reasonable and the quality way better than the suits my husband had in the past. Definitely worth the drive from Troy. We will definitely be back.

New stuff includes leather palm work gloves, socks of all varieties (including black- and white- diabetic socks) I picked up some green welder's shirts for $5 a piece, a dozen pairs of work gloves and some work pants. Silverware is available in boxes opposite the cash register. I asked about the piggy banks and they still have 'em, on shelves high overhead on the walls. Located on the corner, where Gratiot Avenue and the Fisher Freeway intersect, right next to Gratiot Central Market. Private parking for about 8 vehicles.
