Though I'd read that Rome's Monti district was hip and very popular, the route I took from the…read moretrain station to my rental apartment didn't convince me: tourist restaurants and tchotchke shops galore. After a few days traipsing to Rome's other districts I was overjoyed to find the heart of Monti and realize it was exactly as I'd read. MercatoMonti was my destination but getting there was the reward. Walking down a street different than that I'd come in on I learned that the area was indeed filled with authentic shops, vintage stores, and intriguing looking cafes, bars, and restaurants. Be still, heart. Sitting amongst all of that is MercatoMonti, a converted parking garage (now part of a hotel) that's used on the weekend as an up-market shopping (non-food/drink) destination. Not a grand affair, but one with maybe 50 vendors, it proved a hugely successful place in which to part with a large wad of euro. Vendors hawked stylish, unique products, much of them hand-crafted. Stylish sunglass frames from the '80s updated with new Ray Ban lenses (90euro), leather/canvas backpack (80euro), a felt coat (70euro), and a camouflage jacket (40euro); clearly I needed to return to my apartment to stow away my bounty. Many of the vendors are "cash only" but there's ATMs nearby. The great thing about MercatoMonti, in addition to the good shopping opportunity, is that it puts you right in the thick of Monti. I'm surprised it's not rated more highly on yelp but I liked it. If you've got the urge to spend, MercatoMonti is a nice, hip place in which to do so.

Quite a nice market, but small and nothing like you would think of a traditional flea European…read moremarket. Mostly lots of clothes and jewelry, some are nicer that others. Merchants are very friendly and the ones I talked to actually were selling their own products. I found the selection to be quite odd however, like handmade kimonos, next to silky scarves, bulky jewelry, urban-style lamps, umbrellas and canvas bags. Prices are low and I did find two great items. Bottom line: great to check out if you are in the neighborhood but I would not go here specifically to see the market.

If you want to feel like you've walked into a magical storybook with the aroma of fresh leather…read morebound books, notebooks, wax stamps, letterhead, and so much more, Cartoleria Pantheon DAL 1910 is the one shop you must stop at. This shop is perfect to get your next yearly calendar, stationary or anything else your day-to-day requires; however, I recommend this shop as well for gifting purposes. Down the same road is a mainstream stationary shop which many people are quite aware of; however, it doesn't feel as special. On a quiet evening while on a stroll to a fave gelateria of mine (Giolitti), I stumbled upon this shop as I saw a display of wax stamp sealers and the opportunity to create your own. It wasn't until then that I looked up and sure enough I was gravitating inside the shop. I wish I had more time to properly look around the shop but I walked away with a wax stamp boxed kit with my fathers initials and a personalized peacock blue leather bound notebook that I will forever cherish. The owner herself was assisting me and although they usually have a week turnaround time for personalization, when I mentioned I was leaving tomorrow morning she made the exception for me. I'm still in awe of the pieces and can't wait to gift my father his gift later this week. The value and price in itself was very well worth it!!

Beautiful Products, but Unfortunately Disappointing Customer Service…read more I really wanted to love this store. Cartoleria Pantheon has a beautiful selection of products, probably the best variety of leather goods and gifts we've seen while shopping in Rome. The leather quality is excellent, the store is charming and well-organized, and there are so many lovely things to choose from. We actually visited twice. Yesterday, we were greeted by a wonderful lady who was kind and welcoming. We were excited to come back today and make our purchases. Unfortunately, today's experience was completely different. We purchased several items, including two leather bags and gifts, but the employee assisting us, Antonio, made the experience unnecessarily uncomfortable. While we were shopping, he stood very close to us rather than giving us the space to browse comfortably. Things became especially unpleasant when we started making our purchases. We first purchased one bag and requested engraving. Antonio told us it would take approximately 40 minutes, which we were completely fine with. I then told him I wanted to browse for another bag while we waited, and he agreed. When I returned to purchase the second bag and request engraving, I asked to see the engraving options one more time before making my final decision, but he was dismissive and didn't properly show them to me. When we tried asking simple questions about how the engraving could be done, he appeared visibly annoyed and impatient. Then, in a very rude and disrespectful tone, he told us to "hurry up" because the engraving factory was about to close. What made the situation even more frustrating was that the engraving he initially told us would take 40 minutes was actually completed in less than five minutes. We were still standing at the checkout counter when another employee brought the finished items back. So not only did we feel rushed and uncomfortable, but the entire situation seemed completely unnecessary. I absolutely understand that employees have closing hours, and I respect that. However, there is a polite and professional way to communicate this to customers, especially when they are purchasing multiple items and simply asking reasonable questions about personalizing products they are paying for. What makes this experience particularly disappointing is that the products themselves are genuinely beautiful. We spent time choosing items we loved and were excited to take home something special from Rome. Instead, we left feeling rushed, uncomfortable, and disrespected. I sincerely hope the owner reads this feedback and takes it seriously. The contrast between the lovely employee who welcomed us yesterday and Antonio's behavior today was disappointing. One employee made us excited to return, while the other made us question whether we would ever want to shop here again. It's genuinely sad because this store has so much to offer, and I would have loved to recommend it wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, beautiful products and excellent craftsmanship cannot make up for poor customer service. Customers should feel welcome and appreciated, not like an inconvenience simply for wanting to make a thoughtful purchase.
