She unreservedly replies and points, "Oh, across the street at James like a few hours ago." I was taken aback that quite possibly the cutest little sequined number I'd ever seen hails from across the street. "Really!? Hrm...." Flash-forward four months to Easter weekend with some time to kill, I stop at James on a lazy, Saturday afternoon. I was immediately greeted by the 70% off rack and a chic but simple L. Space burnt orange bikini for $20! Score! As I browsed some more, the sticker shock set in as even on the 70% off rack I began seeing dresses for $60 or more. Whoa, I thought we were just casually browsing here... James specializes in high-end contemporary fashion with great, contemporary designers (and mostly American) like Black Halo, Hudson, Tart, and Ella Moss. Speaking of Black Halo, they had an ultra chic, sharply tailored Rouland Mouret-esque dress that was calling my name, except for the $340 price tag. I thought James is an incredible find, especially in Morehead City - all the fashions were unique and stylish, however just a bit overpriced. I know that's their typical price point (elsewhere) and there were several pieces I wanted but just wasn't prepared to drop $129 on a blouse or $200+ on a trendy one shouldered or drapey summery dress; maybe for a few key sought after wardrobe staples, but James isn't that kind of store in my opinion.

Inside this store we found tons of items we liked, a bit more classy decor, and much higher quality clothing and sun coverups and sweatshirts. By accident we found out that when you bought a shirt you could get any of the wall designs behind the register heat printed onto your shirt at no charge. What?!? Ok - so a couple of them were up charges but like 90% were free. We had a great time customizing three shirts (for $60 total) and the staff were so helpful and friendly with us. Very patient. Showing me all the designs so I could choose and making suggestions. Great shop. And we got beautiful shirts. I'll share pics later.

This shop offered some exclusive brand names like Spartina handbags, clutches, wallets, jewelry, key chains and scarves. (I have a clutch and love it and my friend bought a beautiful wallet here.) They carried Scout canvas bags and backpacks, Eyebobs brand readers, a large men's department with fabulous "see" worthy ties and belts along with handsome garments. And for your furry friends, there was a sizable pet section. For your tots, there was a clothing and toy selection with some cute pirate and mermaid pieces. Although a bit pricey, the quality of the goods here can not be ignored. The customer service is pleasant enough and you are bound to enjoy shopping at this specialty spot!

It's this previous life that makes each bag unique. Our materials come from Maine first, New England second and USA third. We use one of the last remaining thread manufacturers in the U.S. and one of a few rope manufacturers in New England. And our sail supply chain? Well, that's as local as it gets. We collect our sails one at a time through a network of passionate boaters who love our community waters as much as we do. Our bags are designed and sewn in a building that hangs over the water. We're located on Custom House Wharf in the heart of Portland's working waterfront. It's an unconventional location to be sure. But we think the sound of seagulls and the smell of bait from the local lobster boats is an important part of the character of our bags.

My daughter and I walked in earlier today and two clerks, who were 'folding' shirts, treated us like we were scum of the earth! They shifted in their heels and acted 'busy', trying to not breathe the same air as us, much less speak - OH! The horror!! Eye contact? Ewe. Twice we passed them --- and it was so obvious they did not think we had the 'money' to spend there.
