This weekend I was in Durango. We decided to google and see if anyone was doing Friday the 13th tattoos since we love tattoos and it would be something to commemorate our fun little trip. We found a tattoo shop right in the middle of downtown (Animas Tattoo) that was doing them. We were all for it and excited. We show up and everything seems great. Lady at the front desk is nice. Everything seems clean. We wait a bit and then we finally get called in for our tattoos. I hop up on the table. The artist is friendly and everything seems great. Until it isn't. I ask him a simple question. I asked why he decided to move there from Maryland. And mid tattoo this BIGOT starts spewing racism. He cried about how "he couldn't go anywhere as a white guy" and that "he'd come home to 5 negroes in the back of his car." I shit you not, those were his words. I was frozen. This man was in the middle of a tattoo and had a needle to my skin. I literally didn't know what to do. Mid rant, Megan also walks in and I'm honestly concerned for both of our safety at this point. He's racist so very likely homophobic too. And I wasn't wrong. In the span of this tattoo that took maybe 10-15 mins, this man ranted about black people, liberals, and used the words faggot and retard. I now have a tattoo that looks great, but it tainted by this experience. I don't want the artwork of some racist asshole bigot on my body. I am going to get it covered up by something that represents the opposite. Something that represents love of all humans. Women. The world. Maybe this experience needed to happen. So I could tell my story. So it could lead me to a tattoo with such deep meaning. I honestly wish I could go back in time and stop the minute he started spewing racist bullshit. I was frozen. I didn't know what to do. It's a shit excuse. I want people to be able to think about what they would do if they were ever in this place. I don't want anyone to ever go back to this shop. I don't want POC unknowingly letting this garbage human put something on their body. Don't go to Animas Tattoo in Durango. Don't let your friends go there. Don't let Bill Peoples put something on your body. read more

If you want real tattoo and piercing work and happen to be in Durango THIS, IS THE PLACE! Plenty of parking behind the building next to the river and the atmosphere is the best. Cleanliness and professionalism is second to non! I have only been in twice for some tattoo work and I can't say enough wonderful things about Megan and Bill who own and operate this place.
