I was driving home from work one night at about midnight in 1990. I worked really close to home and…read morethis one time, I thought to myself, I was just too tired to put on my seatbelt. Please be advised, you are never too tired, or too anything to avoid putting on your seatbelt. Do you want to know why? Because that one time that you don't put on your seatbelt is the time that you get hit head-on by a drunk driver and your head will almost go through your windshield. That's what happened to me. That unfortunate encounter with that drunk driver and my decision not to wear a seatbelt back in 1990 has terrible affects on me currently. I can't work my 8 hour shift, sitting at a computer 5 days in a row without excruciating pain in my neck and shoulders. I use a good CBD cream to mitigate the pain but the pain relieving effects don't last that long. I get up periodically and stretch but still, by the end of my tour, all I'm capable of doing is taking my muscle relaxer and pain killer and lay down for a couple hours. I even get Botox injections to keep the migraines at bay. But recently, despite my best efforts and Botox, I had two severe migraines in one week. I tried sleeping but the pain was too acute. I ended up in the emergency department at 3:00 am twice. It had been almost 2 years since I'd seen Dr. Bender and had a therapeutic massage. Clearly going to the emergency room wasn't working for me. Even after they treated my migraine I could still feel it's presence. I needed a chiropractic treatment. I am so lucky that my insurance is good at Avista Chiropractic and luckier still that they could fit me in last Friday. I got an hour long massage. Sally really worked out all the knots, tight spots and just plain really fucked up muscles in my neck, shoulders and face. She did an awesome job. After my massage I saw Dr. Bender. I just love her. She finds everything that is out of balance and recalibrates it. She also does at treatment that I've never had any other Dr. do; headache protocol she calls it. She puts on surgical gloves and manipulates the roof of your mouth with her finger. It totally works. When I walked into Avista Chiropractic last Friday I was broken and in pain, I walked like an old lady. Tom Dutcher is as good as it gets when it comes to Chiropractic care…read more I started seeing Tom around 2005 after a major snowboarding accident. With four bulging discs C4-7, I was in fear on of herniating. I literally felt numbing in my fingers. I went three days a week for a period of time and some physical therapy. I believe in the healing that Tom provides. He is very spiritual in how he educated you about what he is doing and how the body reacts to movement and treatment. He doesn't force an adjustment. He is methodical. Needless to say, I've recovered fully. I didn't need to have any fusion. I see Tom periodically as needed. Lately it's been maybe four times per year, if that. And I travel over an hour one way to see him now that I've moved away from Portland. I refuse to see anyone else. Thanks Tom. You are the Superman of Chiropractors. And a stand up human being. However the person that works at the front desk, Lucy, will be the reason he has lost me for a new patient. On my initial visit, I walked in the was barely greeted and was given an attitude as though she was being terribly bothered by walking in the door. There was no smile and no warm greeting whatsoever. It is a reminder that when people walk into a chiropractic office it is because they are in critical pain and they should be greeted with a warm smile and compassion. She has none... Then as I was getting ready to leave she informed me that their office is out of network for my insurance and that I owed them $95! In the initial paperwork, they asked for insurance information and if the insurance is out of network or is not covered then it has been my experience in offices that the patient is informed as a courtesy. I called the office this morning and immediately she was on the defensive and said that she does not call the patient to let them know that information that it is the responsibility of the patient to know everything before they walk in the door... Part of that may be true, but my insurance covers chiropractic... It would've been a great courtesy if they had let me know they we out of network and I could've made other arrangements to find someone in network. This was a referral that I was given to go to this office, and she, Lucy, is ruining any possibility of new clients for this office. I would not recommend anyone to go to that office just because of her and the doctor would do well to address the situation and make necessary changes if he feels his business would benefit from it. I had chiropractic treatments 25 years ago for sciatica in NH, and my leg pain symptoms after the accident felt similar. I want to highly recommend this clinic and all the staff who treated me. Dr. Chris Johnson, the chiropractor, is very skilled, sought to thoroughly understand my needs, was very clear in his explanations and helped me tremendously. His physical therapist, Kate, is gentle, knowledgeable and effective. I tried acupuncture for the first time ever, and David the acupuncturist explained everything very well, alleviating my concerns; while I am not scared of needles, I was a bit wary. The treatment was very relaxing, mostly pain-free and I'm very glad I tried it. Finally, I must applaud my massage therapist, Faren, who seemed to work miracles. She was so booked up that I didn't get to see her until later in my course of treatment, and this week, on only the second massage appointment with me, found the "trigger spot" in my hip that seemed to finish the elimination of my pain. After my recent session with her I felt so much better, I was able to walk my dog again for half-mile intervals, sleep through the night with no drugs, and generally feel very close to being fully healed. Faren is extremely skilled and I can see why her schedule is full! I believe it was likely the combination of all these therapies that helped me, and I absolutely value all of their coordinated efforts.
