Okay let's talk about this amazingly cute church hidden in Kaneohe. Its on the way to Windward Community College, take the left by the District Court, and follow the signs from there -- spotlights at night. Pre-COVID I loved going to their Sunday services! I never felt pressured to sign-up for anything or join any extra prayer groups. I could sit in the back and enjoy the sermon at my own pace. The place is AC'ed with drinks and pastries FREE before and after services. They have a lot of weekly times and dates so you could go on your not traditional Sunday and still get your cup filled. Their website is up-to-date and always featuring fun upcoming events for the church. I also really LOVE that Anchor records and streams their services! Their site has old sermons as well as new ones every week. You have the option to tune in every Sunday (which is SO great because of the pandemic). This venue is also SO beautiful for events. Funerals, weddings, baptisms, etc. You have the Ko'olau's right behind you, tons of open patio space, room for vendors, entertainers, and more, PLUS tons of seating inside! You could easily fit 100+ people if needed. Ample parking as well. During COVID Anchor does a great job at staying relevant and providing remote services for their people. Online prayer requests, streamed sermons (as mentioned), and more! ALL the staff are so amazing! No judgement here! The pastors are relatable and the messages are fine-tuned to their audiences. The warmth is always present when I attend in-person events. I would HIGHLY recommend Anchor to anybody and everybody regardless of where you are in your faith. Just check 'em out if you can!

A friend brought me to Anchor Church last night to see a special speaker. Aside from weddings and funerals, I think I've only been to a church service once since high school to see Oliver North speak for New Hope Christian Fellowship. Anyway, last night's guest special speaker was John Bevere. I was very glad that I went. Upon arrival at the parking lot, there is a golf cart type shuttle that will bring you to the main entrance of the church. There were about 50 people outside socializing and enjoying a cup of coffee while I could hear uplifting, almost rock type music coming from indoors inside. After a few brief introductions we found our seat in the middle front part of the church. There were three large TV screens with the words to the song about faith, love, and devotion. There were a couple of brief prayers and introductions and then the main speaker, John Bevere who was outstanding. There was another song before the service ended and then just outside there were book sales and giveaways if you could not afford it, a taco truck, a cupcake truck, fruit popsicles, coffee and hundreds of people enjoying the fellowship. I am definitely not a traditional church goer but it is strongly recommended even as a wonderful social event.

What I love!: I have been coming to this church for about 5 years and I just LOVE it! Pastor Dave Barr and his staff (and volunteers) are so amazing and so welcoming! They use 5 theaters for service and have child care for children from 6weeks to 6th grade! They also have jr high and high school services for the teenagers. The theaters that they have their services in serves fresh brewed Starbucks coffee along with having yummy donuts and pastries for you to sip on and eat during service. What I really love about this church though is that there are NO JUDGMENTS! God knows I have been through ups and down and while I've strayed away, I have always felt so welcomed and loved when I've come back. New hope windward also doesn't judge you if you aren't a christian. When I say they welcome everyone, I really mean that they welcome EVERYONE and that is what I LOVE about this church. I encourage anyone and everyone to join them in one of their services and if you can't make it to a Service, you can watch it online! I love new hope windward!

He is a true…read morestudent of the Bible and teaches in a manner which is both engaging and convicting at the same time. Children are a major priority: They stay in church for worship time, then Pastor Perry has them go on stage for a children's sermon which mirrors what he intends to teach to the adults. They are then off to Sunday School to be taught about God's love for them. One thing that struck me on the first time I attended and since is that the pastor knows each child by name. The church also has a very active AWANA club and has an annual "Vacation Bible School" during the Summer. The youth group is a solid bunch of kids who are truly seeking the Lord's face through the assistance of the youth pastor, Pete Keizer. They meet once a week for in-depth study of the Bible as well as games and worship. They serve the community with food distribution to the needy people of Nanakuli as well as serving at the River of Life homeless shelter downtown. The music ministry is phenomenal, and the Worship Pastor, Josh Nordgren, continually encourages the musicians to improve in their musicianship and to grow in their faith. He plays a mix of modern praise songs with at least one very familiar hymn thrown in to the mix. The people in this church exemplify what is meant by "Christ Follower". They show love toward one another as well as to strangers. They spontaneously pray for one other when the need arises. They have active community outreach programs and sponsor missionaries from the church all over the world. They even created a in-house sponsorship program much like "Compassion International" to support AIDS orphans at an orphanage in Uganda. Their motto is "A family for You", and I have found that that is the perfect motto for this church. Give them a try.

I really like the big screens that show the songs at appropriate times - this eliminates the need for hymnals and thus being better for the environment! I also enjoy the air conditioning - the two churches that I visit in town do not have a/c. Sometimes I see coworkers at mass - it kinds strange seeing them outside of work - like...hey!! what are you doing here? Oh, yeah - you have a life, too! Father Herman is a good guy. He's humble and down-to-earth. It's easy to understand his homilies - which is important for me. I had met him in person as I went to a class at St. Ann's with my co-worker, called "Catholics Returning Home". We both learned a lot. I never went to Sunday School because my elementary and high schools were Catholic. Recently, I had an emergency & I needed a place to go have a good cry. It was not during regular church hours, but I tried the door of the chapel... it was open! I spent a few minutes by myself in the presence of the Lord, reflecting on the meaning of life and pondered the mystery of death and why my friend, Lucille, was taken from this earth in such a strange fashion. I was able to compose myself and write a few lines in the Book of Special Intentions near the door of the chapel. I felt at peace and that my prayers would be answered... Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May Lucille's soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!

IMHO, it's the parishoners that make a particular church succeed. When there are people…read moreenthusiastic about their faith, then it makes the service a whole lot more entertaining than mundane. St. Ann's is a perfect example. Granted Fr. Herman is awesome, but I think it's because he is a true local guy. He went to Damien for high school! Not to say that priests from outside the state aren't great, but being effective at connecting with the local people is a great help. That's one of the main reasons why I give this place 5 stars. St. Ann's is a newer built church so it has the ac and projector screens etc. I do find the ac on the cooler side, so I try to have sleeves or a sweater on. This makes me think of the churches in Italy where it's required to have your shoulders covered when you enter. Parking in the lot is adequate, but be prepared to wait to exit after Mass. If you need to be somewhere in a hurry, park on haikū road, but careful crossing the street if you're on the mall side.
