Hands down, this is one of the best music festivals in St. Louis.
In a nutshell, An Under Cover Weekend (AUCW) brings local musicians to an audience that might not yet know them in a way that anyone can appreciate - music covers. Each act is paired with one musician/group to cover, and the band performs that act's music as if they were the act themselves. We're talking total note-for-note performances as well as band impersonation. Thus, a band will "become" Radiohead or Rolling Stones or such. There are so many good things about this ginormous shindig:
* Carefully selected St. Louis-area musicians with tons of talent
* The music of national acts with lots of hits = easy to sing along
* Band/cover pairings are secret until they're purposefully leaked via social media
* Venue (The Firebird) is a smokefree club that's known for supporting local music and hosting great national acts
* Costumes and celebrity posing out the wazoo.
* 30-minute sets of music means it's just like seeing your favorite acts
* About five acts per night
* Two or three days of this awesomeness
* Each night is usually only $10!
Some of the St. Louis bands who have been involved with AUCW have included Bo & the Locomotive, Union Tree Review, The Blind Eyes, Murder City Players, Magnolia Summer and Via Dove. Acts covered have included Elvis Costello, Nirvana, R.E.M., Reel Big Fish, Stevie Wonder and Cake.
I'm seriously not kidding when I tell you that I salivate - SALIVATE - for this fest every year. I've never been disappointed, and it's awesome to see our fabulous local musicians stretching their talents. read more
