While he's typing on his keyboard, he asked me what my situation was in a rude tone. I told him I had sleep apnea. No introduction, no eye contact. I thought maybe he was the assistant gathering information before the doctor arrives. Dr. Chan finally turns around from his monitor and I looked at this white lab coat and his name was on the coat. I was surprised, I've never had an experience with any doctors I visited with this type of initial interaction. I wasn't looking to be his friend but common courtesy and decency between a doctor and his patient isn't too much to ask when meeting for the first time. I guess he failed Bedside Manners 101 in medical school. It goes downhill from there. Dr. Chan has a habit of talking down to you. I asked him a couple of questions and it seems like my questions were trivial and I was wasting his time. Dr. Chan said my sleep apnea was probably due to acid reflux. I told him I never had any acid reflux problems before. Without verbally responding, he handed me a sheet of paper on how to deal with acid reflux. Finally, Dr. Chan said in order to know for sure if I have sleep apnea, I should go to a sleep center so they can monitor my sleeping habits. I innocently asked him if he knows of a sleeping center in the Lower East Side. His response was " How I'm I suppose to know?" By now I wanted to leave his office ASAP. He sets a date for a follow up visit and knowing in my mind, I would never return to his office. I don't under how he has so many positive reviews, Chatbots? If you want experience a doctor with a monotone voice, obnoxious behavior, and who is rude & condescending, please go see Norman Chan.

The wait was 5x as long and they are anything but detailed.) I really appreciate all the work he does for my family, especially my mom, who needs extra care. Although I do not visit the doctors office often, I feel like I get premium care when I am there. Just taking my knee pains for example, when I had visited another doctor's office for convenience sake (they also had no wait time. It was 5 minutes wait max), they just told me they did not feel like anything was wrong and to just give it some time. When I went to Dr. Lau, he went into detail telling me what might be causing the pain, how my recent lifestyle changes could have impacted it and what I should do to ease the pain, even telling me how to look for the appropriate shoes. He remembers my family medical history and makes me feel at ease during every visit. I believe that his medical information are sincere and not for the sake of selling the drug. The consultation fees are reasonable and he would not overcharge for his services. During the times when I have to pay out of my pocket, he provides discounts (upon request) and drug samples to help me out. Although it didn't make a big difference, I feel appreciated because the price reduction is only given out to his long-term valuable clients. I like his new office (less than 2 blocks radius) because it is much cleaner and roomier as compared to his old location. The staffs are always nice and cheerful. Unlike other clinics, their customer service team is polite and helpful regardless in-person or by-phone. I notice that they are really trying to assist instead of directing the inquiry to other parties and diffusing their responsibilities. One thing I do not enjoy is the waiting time. I always arrive there prior to my appointment and yet, I have to wait for at least another half hour for my turn. Why are they letting the walk-in patients (who arrived 5 minutes before me) to be seen first? What is the point of scheduling an appointment then? I understand the fact that Dr Lau has a huge list of clients but I have to say that such action is unfair and he needs to improve on his (appointment) time management. She can appear approachable and compassionate one moment and in another moment she will rip you a new one. It depends on whether you catch her in a mood or not, and if the office is especially busy. On the plus side, she does seem to get things done if something needs to be communicated to Dr Fung. However she does often makes you (along with everyone else in the waiting room) fully aware of what an imposition it is for her to do so, and quite loudly. As someone with a newly diagnosed chronic disease of a serious nature, alongside the stresses that come with it, I definitely hit an impasse with her when she tore me a new one for some administrative confusion. I can't deal anymore with her mood swings--whether my next call will be answered by Jekyll or Hyde. I no longer have room for this kind of verbal and emotional assault in my life, especially from my primary health care provider office. I should not feel bullied, nor should I be made to feel trepidation for making a call to her office for a necessary medical request. For starters, Dr. Ng has aided and cured almost every physical ailment I've come under during my tenure in this world. Whether it be a minor cold, or a horrid case of the flu, Dr. Ng has been there to given professional medical advice and prescriptions to aid in a speedy recovery. The usual appointment for Dr. Ng goes like this... Appointment Time: 10:00am Arrive @ 10:00am - Chun: "Hi, 10:00am for Dr. Ng" - Nurse: "Sure, please have a seat." Proceed to wait in the waiting room. Approximately 2 Hours Later... - Nurse: "Chun, the Dr. will see you now..." Into one of three examination room (aka, waiting room number 2) Approximately 20 Minutes Later... Dr. Ng: "Hi Chun, Great to see you again! Have you gained/lost weight (as weight fluctuations is a seasonal thing for me)? So... What's wrong?" The entire sit down time with Dr. Ng goes anywhere from 30-45 minutes. There's never any rush to get you out of his office as Dr. Ng has always been the type to sit with you to understand your ailments to give the proper diagnosis. In addition, he takes the extra step in giving preventative measures on how to avoid such future related susceptibility. All in all, good personal care physicians are hard to find. I've heard horror stories about doctors that won't prescribe medication when a patient requires it, or ones that don't listen to detail so they misdiagnosis an ailment, etc... Just to show, when you find a good thing, stick with it. In this case, I found a great doctor and in all likelihood, he'll be my PCP until he retires.
