Train stations are beautiful, particularly in Europe. I've been to Rome's Termini and London's Paddington and Kansas City's Union Station. New York of course has Penn Station and Grand Central. So it's not unexpected to find a stunning structure here in Cincinnati. Art Deco lines throughout, whether it's the main design of the building from the front, the beautiful rotunda, the little points here and there. I wasn't visiting the Historical Museum or the Science Museum, just here to see this amazing building, hang out for a bit in the cafe and then head onwards. I would be cautious of the hours of this location in which I have been stranded short of Louisville Kentucky. As it would seem its open for three of four hours as for its better advertised role in the wee hours of the morning. They don't take cash or concern theirselves for the homeless people of Cincinnati or Covington and are deeply hated and not trusted. read more

So the train leaves at 1:40am for chicago but they won't let you into the terminal until 12 midnight even though it's almost impossible to get a Lyft that late. So it gets worse...museum center won't let you enter the rotunda because one idiot got into one of the museums earlier today because security wasn't paying attention and the doors weren't properly secured. Fortunately the workers of the museum understand the idiocy of this policy and offered for me to stay in the vestibule just inside and offered a chair for me ti wait. In summary, the museum screws up and patrons of Amtrak (the entire reason this building exists) pay the price for it. But still...why open the station at midnight? It's a shared flaw. Not sure I will opt for this mode of transportation again because Amtrak makes it' the most inconvenient option to use them. read more

The Cincinnati Ohio Union Terminal train station is the most beautiful train station in America, including Canada's. It stands up well worldwide. Many other city stations are fine neoclassical architecture. Cincinnati Union Terminal is heroic art deco. The station is on the Cardinal line between Washington DC and Chicago that stops at Union Terminal in the AM. Your friends, a taxi, or car service can drop you at the front. It is well lit and safe. There are terminal staff to direct you beyond the museum to the Amtrak lounge. I arrived midnight-1AM. You will pass the rotunda with the full horizon mosaic by German immigrant Winold Reiss illustrating American workers. There is also an atmospheric ceiling, and the architectural hardware was designed for the building. You can use the drinking fountain trick to communicate across the rotunda arch. The Amtrak lounge reflects the terminal preservation and restoration in its beauty. It has beautiful terrazzo floors, an epic stone drinking fountain, and mahogany parquet panels. The Amtrak space has a staffed desk train hours and rows of seats. Hey Amtrak, create more comfy conversational settings! Amtrakers are conversational. They have dedicated non-period and clean restrooms. At train time they lead you down into the belly of the tracks where freight dominates. My Amtrak reservation had an email message which was the ticket scanned on the phone, they have a mobile app too. A long time ago there was a long concourse with many gate stairs to platforms from the left and right. Today meeting long haul arrivals is inhibited by paranoid security policy. If you've ever done any research into the history of Cincinnati's Union Terminal you'll discover that during its heyday it made CVG look like child's play. But, alas, those days are long gone and the railroad station portion of the facility was tore down to make way for a large rail yard. That being said, Amtrak still faithfully utilizes the terminal on the lone surviving train platform, located at the back edge of the building. I happen to love trains and have taken several trips in & out of here on Amtrak.....mostly to Chicago. The prices aren't bad at all, if you have the time and inclination. I will add that if you've ever traveled by train around Europe (as I have) you will be sorely disappointed if you expect the same level of service. In fact, Amtrak is notoriously late. The schedule for the single daily train couldn't be any less user-friendly but that's only because it's the Cardinal - which runs back and forth between New York and Chicago. The train stops here in the early morning hours - 1am (ish) for Chicago-bound and 4am (ish) for the NY bound trains. It's not really that bad when you consider that it's kind of fun and adventurous. NY-Cincinnati is actually a neat trip.....albeit long. The segment between here and DC is beautiful - especially in the mountains. When I go to Chicago on Amtrak I'll typically take the train up and ride the Megabus back. The bus is nice as well. Seats on Amtrak trains are large and comfortable. Each seat has an electrical outlet for your gadgets and they recline as well. During the winter the cars can be cold, so bring a blanket or heavy coat. Please note, the area around the Union Terminal is not safe. Use caution and do not leave your car in the parking lot if you're traveling. There are several cab companies that can be called upon for transit to/from the station.....although they are not cheap. read more

Just this year I had my first experience riding Amtrak. And what an awesome experience. From the ease of check in to the comfortable ride, I can't believe I didn't know about this sooner. The train fare is cheap and you can check two bags for free. I always sit in coach seating. The seats are oversized and recline nearly all the way back. And every seat has a three prong plug for charging all your gadgets. No need to ever power down gadgets at any point; You can keep your cell phone on the entire time. It's nice to walk between trains and enjoy the cafe/dining car. You get nearly a gourmet meal in the dining car. It's a little pricey for food but I guess they have to make up for the cheap fair somewhere. It's interesting to see the many small towns and scenery as you pass by; and don't worry about ever having to change trains. Unless you are traveling across country, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Make sure you allow extra time for delays because Amtrak shares the track with CSX and the freight trains have the right of way. So expect some delays on the front or back end of your trip. I went to travel to DC for Halloween weekend this year to visit my friends. I knew flying would be a lot (est. $1600+ round trip) and driving was def. out of the question from Cincinnati. Amtrak was really cheap ($200-250)! What was really neat was that it is located in the Union Terminal (I thought that it would be closer to the Grey Hound Station). The service on the train was top notch! There were people from the train society giving details and information about certain areas that we went through (New River Gorge = Awesome!, passed the place Martha Stewart was locked up, and other tidbits along the way). I mostly stayed in the dining car because it seemed that not that many people were there, and there was more viewing room to see the countryside. The seats are somewhat big: you have a share a middle armrest, like on a plane! If you go, bring your own pillow because they are very small. Also, the chairs lean back, and just like a plane, be prepared to deal with people kneeing your chair. But, if you are lucky, you can lay in both seats. If you decide to travel, have someone drop you off or call a taxi....its not a safe area to leave your car....same when you arrive. Eastbound (DC/NYC) leaves at about 3 AM, and Westbound drops you off at about 2:30 AM. The only real drawback is that the train takes a long time (taking to account for all the multiple stops). Also, the times are estimates! East bound, we had two unscheduled stops: a mother's kids had medical emergencies (could give them that...1 1/2 hr delay), and then a track switch malfunction (3 1/2 hr delay that sucked!!!) Overall, besides the unscheduled stops, it was fun. Also, if you decide to go, bring tons of DVDs, iPod etc., work, puzzles, games, and headphones. This is actually a shortened version of what happened I have so much more to tell you. I was supposed to drive 45 minutes to Cincinnati to catch the Amtrak train their to go to Chicago and then on to Colorado. I was traveling with my 12 year old grandson who witness this entire experience. I traveled from Cincinnati to Chicago. When I reach the Cincinnati train station the gentleman that work there was fast asleep on the chair with other guests waiting to board the train. From Cincinnati to Chicago we experience urine smell throughout the whole cabin throughout the whole entire trip. The bathroom smell permeated everywhere. The train Personnel was courteous kind and helpful however.  Upon reaching Chicago Union Station is where we began to experience our troubles. The customer service was rude, demeaning, and short-tempered with us. Several times snapping at us and yelling at us and calling us names because we asked questions. Our train from Chicago to Colorado was canceled. Weather related incidents is what caused the cancellation and that did not cause upset to me because you cannot control Mother Nature. However hours and hours of unanswered questions not knowing what was going to happen... they did put us up in a hotel with vouchers for a taxi to and from the hotel and vouchers for food in the Union Station food court. When we were getting ready to leave the hotel to come back to the station in hopes to catch the next train to Colorado the taxi company that they gave us a voucher for refused to come out here and said it was out of their jurisdiction. We then had to rely on the hotel for communications between them and Amtrak and the hotel finally got us a bus from Amtrak to pick us up.. there were about fifty of us stranded. Most of the passengers just decided to take it upon themselves to get their own taxi cab. I spoke to customer service on the phone I believe it's in Washington DC or Pennsylvania and they told me to go back to the station and request a ticket back home to Cincinnati because there could be a delay from Colorado coming back home ...I couldn't do that with a twelve-year-old passenger with me. We had a couple of day leeway but that was it.  so we decided to come home and forget the rest of our trip. During our stay at Chicago Union Station I watched abuse neglect and shear disregard of the elderly and the handicapped. At one point after waiting 5 hours my sugar started to drop I am hypoglycemic. Mind you I've been waiting 5 hours to speak to a manager to get a trip back to Cincinnati. I approached the customer service rep named George and told him I was hypoglycemic and my sugar was dropping. When it gets that bad I have been known to pass out.  after explaining this to George he simply stated do you want to see the manager or do you want to eat? I chose to eat. The entire trip was just incomprehensible and I can't believe a place that's run by the government is so blatantly callus towards the guests that pay their salary. Honestly, I would rather be handcuffed to the inside of Ted Bundys car going down a dark road...then to ever go to Chicago Union station again! I took the Cardinal from Cincinnati to Chicago. It was pretty uncomfortable in coach. You don't really see anyone that works there other than checking your ticket. There is no security. Convenient, yet I'm not sure so safe.. My first time on train. Sort of feels like things haven't been cleaned or updated in years. Though, on the positive, the Cincinnati station itself is pretty cool sight to behold. Feels like you were dropped in old movie. read more

When you walk into the building go to the right and all the way to the back on the right side. Amtrak is back there. The Amtrak attendant is always customer service oriented and helpful.
