On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, I boarded the Southwest Chief in Galesburg, IL, heading to Albuquerque to see my kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. This would be my second round-trip on the Southwest Chief. It was a stressless trip, thanks to the amazing, friendly, and helpful Amtrak employees. What makes the trip even more of an experience is that Galesburg, IL, is the perfect place to explore. I rely on Amtrak to get from this depressive, desolate area of Macomb Il, to Chicago for any plane that I have to take elsewhere. It is nice have the station, but it makes it hard to work around the only 2 times that you can get the train to and from this hell hole of a town. It would be wonderful if you could catch the train and return at various hours, and if it rain the other way too, The trains themselves are run down or the Illinois Zephyr is . The price is still decent. In Macomb IL you have to do everything online because the station here doesn't sell tickets. read more

The station is definitely nicer than I expected. However, the bathrooms could have used some deep cleaning. The air vent above the stall I used had large clumps of dust. The Lobby was nice though. Vending machines, books to borrow, lots of seating with plenty of windows, outdoor seating and tables, and someone manning the desk incase there's a delay or such. read more

I stopped her looking to check out the railroad museum next door to find them closed and I realized the railroad action is in the Amtrak station with Amtrak stopping, yard work passing the station and freight trains passing through. This is a really good rail fanning spot with lots of action. read more

Pretty lousy station for what it's worth. Station was suppose to open around 5am and no one showed up until 7am. I wasn't at all surprised especially after reading the reviews. Luckily it was a nice morning (weather wise) and safety was not an issue. I just wish there was more accountability for things like this. read more

Picturesque train station in the Midwest! Small building which seems and looks historic! Nice statue out front. Benched seating inside with restrooms. Couple tables and benches around the building as well if the weather is nice or you're a smoker. No need to check in with the employee behind the glass. They will also alert the room when the train is approaching. You just walk out to the track (only 2) and the train employee will instruct you which car to board. They check your ticket once boarded and on your way. read more

Take the train - it is by far one if the very best ways to really see America, the continent and take the path less traveled. You will see the country like you have never seen it before. The worst part about the Galesburg Amtrak Station is the anticipation of how close you are to finally reaching Chicago. The station has an open platform to stretch your legs or quickly board the train heading to points beyond. There are no services here, but you can quickly see a typical midwestern farm town before boarding the train to your final destination. read more

Took the train from galesburg Illinois to denver colorado. Everything went smooth. The way back was nothing but problems. The train was delayed many times and all in all about 10 hours late. My wife and I and my 1 year old took this journey thinking it would be an experience. It was, just in the worst way. The staff was very rude when we asked how much longer, one even laughed in our face and walked away. My son ran out of diapers and they wouldn't let us get more from our checked bags. Plus there was no air flow in the room, nothing like sitting in a pool of sweat for 24 hours. They also wouldnt let me take my son off the train at a stop so he could walk around a bit. He wouldnt stop screaming, they had no sympathy. Worst experience ever, rude unprofessional staff. The roomette is nothing more than a closet and feels like a jail cell. NEVER again!!! read more

I'll separate this specific review from the actual traveling experience, and focus on the station and the experience boarding. The station has been remodeled and is significantly improved from the past few years; better vending machines, new TV screens, remodeled bathrooms. I'm docking to two stars from four because of a specific experience with one of the ticket agents who, for whatever reason, decided to turn the boarding experience into a condescending lecture on train safety. She went person by person to inspect the size of all of the bags and checking their IDs. Like Galesburg is really a target for attack; it's literally flyover country. I was born and raised in Galesburg. Nothing happens there. Her role there was unnecessary at best. Best part; when setting up to board the train, *one* of my feet happened to be over the yellow line as everyone else was standing adjacent to my wife and I. This woman spotted this apparently egregious act and turned my transgression into a teachable moment for the children in the crowd, casting me out as some seeming criminal. I understand that policies may have changed, but her demeanor was the worst I've come across, in any travel experience I've ever had. Have fun dealing with that. read more

I'm a bit upset regarding the Amtrak California Zephyr. This is a trip of almost three full days. I had reserved first class bedrooms from New York to Chicago, Chicago to San Fransisco. And we booked from Los Angeles back to Chicago and then back to New York. Everything was fine on the first leg. We had boarded the Zephyr and waited on the room as requested until the ticket was taken. We then went to the observation car to relax. On my way there, I tried to make an early reservation for dinner and was told that a reservation would be made when the Manager started taking them. I unwittingly surmised that the first class pax would get their choice of reservation times. When o was finally able to make a reservation, it was for 7:30PM. We are retired and normally eat at about 4:00 PM. Needless to say, I was upset. read more
