Ah... the quintessential mascot of Berlin - the Ampelmännchen. The number of people back home who asked about bringing back some Ampelmann schwag... okay, there weren't that many. More like just a couple friends. But considering the only other thing I was asked to bring back were German 'Trink 'ne Coke mit...' bottles, I guess the Ampelmännchen is still the biggest deal (souvenir-wise, anyway)
The store pretty much has everything and anything with the Ampelmännchen - in both Stop and Go varieties. Shirts, jackets, hats, toys, notebooks, bags, novelty traffic lights, tumblers, clocks, soccer balls... it was really kind of ridiculous. Prices are also not cheap - a basic T-shirt was €25 and prices just skyrocket from there. But it's all very cute. And they make very perfect, 'Germany'-y presents to bring back home for friends and family.
The location of this Ampelmann Store is also super convenient, right next to the Gendarmenmarkt, which is pretty much a big tourist stop, so if you're visiting Berlin, there's a good chance you'll be in the area eventually. In case all the other Ampelmann Shops are too out of your way, you're also only a short block away from the Stadtmitte U-Bahn station. Just remember to bring money. They'll happily take plastic. read more
