Signed up my shy & somewhat timid 4 year old son at AKS in Morro Bay. I must say, one of the best choices I could have made for my lil guy. It has helped with his shyness, given him confidence and even a sense of pride in accomplishing his first Orange belt. Sensei Brian is great with the kids. With varying age levels to accommodate even the youngest potential Karate Kid, he gives each class it's own fun spin & the fundamentals of what Karate requires. How he manages to get a group of 3 & 4 year old kiddos to stand at attention & do some moves that EVEN I WOULD STRUGGLE WITH, lets me know that he is a professional at what he does and has a great passion for it. I would highly recommend this school for youngsters, & the young at heart, alike. read more

Great fun and great people. I originally came to the adults class to get some good cardio and cross training.. I ended up finding a new and amazing sport in martial arts. I love it. Everyone is welcoming, patient and fun. I really recommend this for anyone looking for a new challenge and a great time. read more

The academy is run by the Hong Family. They are amazing. Master Dana, Master Steve and Master Hong are extremely patient and experienced. My children always look forward to attending class. You are made to feel as part of a large family, not just as a student that just comes to class. The children are recogonized for school academics and for achievements at home as well. Morro Rock is quite a sight. Ginormous. Near 580 feet tall volcanic plug. Dating back over 20…read moremillion years old. That's old. The name Morro is Spanish for rounded mountain. Spanish explorers were in the area documented as early as the 1540s. The Chumash tribe date back as far as 15,000 years ago. They considered the Rock to be sacred, so sacred to not even walk on it. Don't even think of climbing onto it, it's illegal to do so. Plus you wouldn't want to, it's a bird sanctuary. Home and nesting area for birds including peregrine falcons. So you can imagine all the guano and the smell. Woo wee. You can park next to it and get face to face and touch the rock. But with all those birds, I don't recommend getting too close without wearing a hooded raincoat. Plus Morro Rock is a California State Historical Landmark #821. The plaque is in the parking lot of the beach.

There is a beach right next to the behemoth Morro Rock in Morro Bay, CA. The beach access and…read moreparking is totally free. Yup, FREE. Sandy three mile stretch of beach from the Rock to the camp grounds. There are lifeguards on duty, all ready with their gear ready to save a life. I know they are there daily in the summer, not sure about the other months. This is a popular spot with surfers. Good waves. Another tidbit to know is that there are restroom located in the parking lot. Also smack in the middle of the lot is the California State Historical Marker #821-Morro Rock. I think it's worth a quick stop to read the plaque, take a quick moment to soak in the gorgeous direct view of the rock and not to get all sentimental but also reflect on the past, present and future. Another another tidbit is that dogs and horses are not allowed on the beach due to the protected shorebird habitat such as the western snowy plover that nest from March-September and live here. Service dogs on a leash are allowed though. But so many folks broke the rule once the lifeguards left for the day. Ironic, people want wildlife and nature to be able to visit and enjoy but don't want to follow the rules that protect all those things they enjoy. Go figure?!

I've lived in California most of my life and have been to almost every beach, so it's funny that this one in Morro never really came to mind especially since it's not that far from us. When I finally came last year, I really enjoyed it. The beach was clean, beautiful, and peaceful. There were lots of sand dollars along the shore and even some wildlife, which made it feel even more special. Since that first trip, we've come back about four more times. There's just something about this place that makes me feel calm and at peace every time I'm here.
