What a beautiful drive thru the snowy canyon. There are picnic sites and campgrounds throughout. The road was closed 7 miles in, and we quickly stopped used the potty and took in the scenery while throwing a few snowballs. If you're passing thru and not stopping you don't need a pass but to stop and enjoy the area or hike, you need a pass. We just drive to the end and turned around and they let us in without paying. Watch out for the snow plows! They come at ya quick around corners and sometimes even on the wrong side of the road. read more

As a stupid teen, I would leave my house late at night and come up here to camp with my friends. There's nothing stupid about that, but I do remember leaving SLC one night after midnight and hiking up a trail to backpack, only to have our food get lost out of the pack and having to dine on anemic trout we caught. These days I'm much smarter about my excursions. Recently I had a chance to head out for a picnic and AF Canyon was the right choice. I left at a reasonable hour and had a lovely time, a twilight hike and was home before total dusk. Though the canyon is probably most famous for Timpanogas Cave National Monument, it's really much more than that. In fact, I haven't visited the NM since I was small, but rather come up here for fishing, hiking, and picnicking. There are a few places to do all of those things. Near Tibble Fork Reservoir (listed separately here on Yelp) there's a campground that can accommodate massive groups, though I tend to go for the backcountry dispersed camping available off of the dirt roads beyond the reservoir. The spring brings rushing water and budding trees, the fall brings color, but the best time to access the canyon is always. Note that it's $6 for a three-day, unless you have a National Parks Pass. I wouldn't have paid it as a kid, but these days I suppose I can splurge. read more

Our family loves AF Canyon. It is beautiful and there is a lot to do there--kayaking in Tibble Fork, easy and challenging hikes, waterfalls, educational trails, fishing, picnicking, rock climbing, camping, bird watching... Make sure you do not use a lot of disposable things to reduce your waste, pack out any and all of your garbage, and leave no trace. Keep AF Canyon beautiful. read more

Regardless of the time of year, this canyon is beautiful! They do seem to always be doing something to update the area and make it easier for visitors. It's only $6 for three days. Can't beat that deal! Certain roads close for safety. This is the easiest way to get to the Timp Cave. read more

American Fork Canyon is a local favorite. It is estimated that over a million people visit the canyon every year. It's absolutely a place for everyone. There is some of the most amazing rock climbing right up the canyon. Fire pits are all over for people to grab some wood and head up the canyon for some last minute s'mores. There is Day use and overnight areas to cater to "day" campers and those more adventurous to stay overnight. Tibble Fork has recently been redone which added more beachfront and looks as if it doubled the size of the lake. Bring your paddle board and hit the lake. American Fork Canyon is an ATV lovers paradise. There are single tracks that go all over the hills, and wider trails for the Side By Sides, Jeeps, and ATVs. Trails that go for miles and all offer something unique. For those who don't like hiking or being outside, Alpine Scenic Loop is an absolutely gorgeous 30-45 minute drive that spits you out in Provo Canyon. The aspen trees are amazing. I may be a little bias here because I live so close, but we are constantly finding new things to explore. The canyon is amazing. You need to spend an afternoon exploring, and you'll be going back for the rest of your life. read more
