For a company that runs on customer basis wow I have never been treated so disrespectfully. I checked online as to what time this place opens ..it says 1130. I showed up a few minutes early and waited and when the owner opened the door he was so abrupt and abrasive it was offputting. I have never encountered a business owner as obnoxious and aggressive as the owner of American Diamond Exchange. The staff there have always been courteous and professional. In looking at the reviews, it appears that people who dealt with Ally (or some other associate) were happy and those who dealt with the owner had unpleasant experiences... today I had my first contact with the owner. He should not be anywhere near customers. He has a rude and abusive demeanor, topped off with unreasonable policies, and his prices for simple repairs seem a bit high. I had forgotten my claim ticket when I went to pick up some items that I had left there for minor repairs. He took my ID, I thought just to verify ownership of the items. Instead he made a copy of my driver's license without telling me first. I told him that seemed a bit presumptuous and "kind of crazy" to copy people's driver's licenses without asking permission. I got my ID and the copy back and came back with my claim ticket later that day. While a nice professional lady was helping me, I told her that I would like to speak with the owner about his policy after he finished with another customer. I was explaining to her that my bank card and my I.D. had the same information as the claim ticket I had to retrieve, (not to mention that I had detailed knowledge of the items), and they should have been sufficient for me to claim my items. I saw no reason to copy my license or require the ticket and was seeking an explanation. The owner over heard this conversation and started berating me in a loud aggressive manner from across the room, while he was dealing with another customer. Then another customer ( that had no involvement and no one was talking to) who was speaking with an entirely different sales person joined the owner's argument at me. That person made some vaguely threatening comments and stared me down for the 5 minutes or so that it took the sales person helping me to finish. None of he staff asked him to stop. I never raised my voice or said anything disrespectful to anyone at any time. The owner threatened to show the security camera video to the police. This story is so bizarre it probably sounds made up; I hope he does involve the police so that I can get a copy of it to post. As I was leaving the owner told me to never come back to his store. I told him not to worry about that, it would never happen. There's plenty of other jewelry stores. I suggest everyone stay away from this one. read more

I dropped my antique ring at the Diamond Exchange that was handed down to me from my great-great-grandmother. The ring split at the bottomin so I brought it in to have it repaired. I left the ring with a young woman named Allie who said that she would order the piece to insert into the ring. When I got the ring back, it was two sizes to small. I had to pay for a ring repair that would not even fit on my pinky finger must less my ring finger. She would not give me my ring unless I paid for it. I had to take the ring to another Jeweler, I spent more money to add a piece in the ring so that it would fit. Shame on them, Beware, NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

Today my husband and I stop in the American Diamond Exchange to have his wedding band resized. Keep in mind I purchased the $6,000.00 wedding band from here for my husband. (And Have spent over $10,000 over the year at this store).There was a women who walked into the store with us and began to help us. I explained to her that we purchased the ring from here and we would like to have it resized. She started the sizing process by having my husband try on different bands. All of a sudden this gentlemen comes over, does not introduce himself and starts talking to the women who was helping us. I don't know who he is, he could have been their dog walker for all I know. Then he walks away into the backroom, in haste trying on the different sizing bands I notice that my husband band was missing from the counter, because their was no reason for it to leave our sight without my permission. I asked where is my ring??? The gentlemen is walking out from the back room and says: I have it. I said nicely...I'm not really comfortable with someone taking my diamonds out of my sight. This man lost his mind and told me...I told you I was taking your ring. What do you think I'm going to do with your ring. I nicely explained that: You can't take my belongs without my permission. He replied... I don't want nothing from you, get out. I don't want your money, I'm the owner. My reply was I'm 61 years old and you don't get to speak to me like that!! He replied... I'm older than you. And, I said then your old enough to know better and by the way your customer service skills are awful. The bottom line is he's mad that his store is in a not so great part of town so he feels the need to demonstrate hood behavior.. GOLDSMITH services 4.5/5. General store 1/5 stars. I went here to use their goldsmith services upon recommendation by a friend. I was initially put off by the tacky exterior (they might even have a dreadful cash for gold sign...). When I went in, counterperson promptly ignored me when I said I was browsing for today. He proceeded to talk down condescendingly to me even though I made it clear I was in the market for an engagement, wedding ring purchase (budget upwards of $5k). I got the sense I would be swindled here, definitely a car salesman vibe, though I had done extensive research (any way to ask for the no bullshit treatment??). I didn't understand the treatment as I was dressed nicely, slacks and polo in the summer, more on this later. I finally manage to get a hold of the goldsmith. Ask for Allie, she is friendly, knowledgeable, and talented. I had a very productive discussion and she showed me her portfolio. Finally, she mentioned that the clientele is stodgy (and likely the service). There might have been some age discrimination here (against the under 35 crowd...). Anyways, skip the store. read more

I can't speak for the quality of their items but my review is based on the customer service. This was the first place my boyfriend and I stopped to look at engagement rings together. We were excited but had no idea where to start. The two women didn't seem excited for us at all which should have been a red flag already. I knew I didn't want something too conventional but they pushed me to everything I said I didn't want. Both women seemed annoyed or that they had something better to do but no one else was there but us. When I showed them a ring we liked they both made horrified faces at the natural black diamond ring and mentioned how they couldn't help us (and what I liked was 'cheap'). I managed to get my ring size so that was something I guess. Pretty disappointing experience for what should have been only exciting. If you want a traditional diamond ring they would probably be happier to help you. read more

I am giving this place 3 stars because it is the average of what I really liked and what I really disliked. I have gone there in the past and have been really happy with Kathy Kirker; today I was happy with the work that Allie performed for me. Where this went south is when I tried to replace a number of watch batteries. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a man (presumably David, the owner, that others have referenced?) and a small dog, who the man pushed back into his office twice with his foot. That bothered me, but not everyone feels the same way about animals, so it's possible that I was a bit hypersensitive to it. He directed me to Allie, who was very friendly and helpful. When I inquired about the watch batteries, I was quoted a price of $18-$20 each. The batteries are $8-$10 and there is a $10 labor charge for each. I have never been charged labor for a watch battery replacement anywhere else, but I likely would have paid a single $10 charge, just to get it over with. I cannot, however, justify paying more in labor than the cost of the battery, for each of the watches. As I was leaving the man asked if Allie had been able to help me. I explained that she had helped me somewhat but that I didn't replace the batteries due to the labor charge for each. He got very defensive. When I said that I could understand a labor charge for the time it took to do the work, but not what I was asked to pay, his verbatim response was "Sorry we couldn't help you. There's the door over there." I was stunned. I normally look around when I am at a jewelry store, and I actually have several stones that I need to have set, but I didn't stick around today, and I won't be returning. Thanks to the reviews here, I found another store that does battery replacement, and charges $8-$10 per battery. Not $18-$20. They also do custom work, so I will be bringing my stones with me, to see what they can do. Perhaps because I was wearing no jewelry, and dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, the man misjudged me. I have always been a jewelry hound. I am willing to pay for what I want. He can tell me all he wants about how many people are willing to pay what he asks, and how many batteries he replaces, and how many thousands of dollars of repairs they have in the back room at any given time, but he won't be getting any more money from me. read more

It is with pleasure I write this review !! I searched for a custom jewelry designer and found Ally at ADEX after reading online reviews. I live in New Hampshire and traveled 2 plus hours to meet her and see her work. I brought my diamond ring and the heirloom necklace in and talked to Ally about what I was hoping to do... I was very impressed with the time she took with me sketching drawings to scale so she knew we were on the same page.( other jewelry designers said this could not be done) About five weeks later I picked up my newly designed ring and was totally blown away!!! She totally captured the look I wanted and much much more! If your looking for a creative designer you have found her. I wanted to share an experience I recently had at ADEX. I had stopped by with a picture of a ring that I wanted to recreate while on a budget. I sat with Allie who is the goldsmith and I showed her the picture of the ring. Within a few days she got back to me with a sketch and it was spot on. As you will see, this ring is very detailed.This is not a project that I would of trusted with any other jeweler besides David and his team.I can go on and on about how wonderful this ring came out however I am going to add pictures of the inspiration ring and my ring so that you can judge for yourself. In closing, I have to say that I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such intuitive, creative and kind people. This experience has been nothing but a pleasure! read more

I have a couple of very nice men's diamond rings that while Diamond rings are well scratched. I have used the American Diamond Exchange (ADE) on Whalley Avenue for ring cleaning so decided to see what they could do for repairs as they have a goldsmith center in the back. I brought one ring in that was scratched, too small and dirty for assessing. Allie, the goldsmith, has a fully stocked repair shop for just about any job including repairs, buffing, plating, enlarging, etc. She examined the ring and provided costs and details of what she would need to do to get it back to good condition. At first I thought she would polish up the scratches,, enlarge my ring size and return to me looking a little better. Allie said it would take about 6 weeks which was fine as I was not in any hurry. I was amazed when I got it back how new the ring looked. Scratches gone, polished to mirror finish diamond shiny and no sign of repairs whatsoever - looked brand new. I couldn't believe how it looked. This is the best way to bring an heirloom or any piece you might have to brand new condition. Allie will work with you on all details and budgets. RAH read more

They had a good selection and the staff was knowledgable, understanding and flexible. Beware of lavish showrooms and designer clad salespeople. I strongly advise that you do your " Homework" before plunking down $4000.00 on a (very pretty) diamond ring for your best girl. Sure- you feel like James Bond himself as you are escorted into a private Office ( complete with- Yes- a Hand Model). Alas, your "Bond-like" aura Is diminished when you realize a year or two later that the center stone of your beloved's ring, after having had it appraised by a certified Gemologist, had generated a profit nearing 500%. It has been 14 years since my experience but I am still so livid with this establishment that others need to be forewarned. My fiance and I went to ADE to purchase our wedding rings and upon visiting the store bought a ring for me, and were talked into a custom designed ring by one of their designers. They showed us a lot of nice rings in their case and convinced us custom was the way to go. So we agreed and put down a deposit for the custom ring. Upon our return to pick up the ring we were shown a silvery hunk of metal with uneven edges, overly thick band and an overall extremely poor quality. It was ugly and embarrassing and I remember thinking how could they possibly sell this or call this a piece of jewelry. My Fiance burst into tears. So we approached ADE and asked them to re-do the ring, and they refused. They told us this is what we ordered and this is all we are going to get. So we asked for refund on our deposit, and they refused that. They simply said this is the best they can do and we are to take it or leave it. They refused a refused a refund, refused a re-do of the horrible twisted metal they made and they said either pay us for the remainder of the ring (which we did not want), or lose our deposit (maybe $500 at the time). So we were out $500. At the time we filed a BBB report, but that went nowhere. So you have two young kids, trying to get married with all the expenses and American Diamond Exchange does this to us with no conscience. Absolutely unacceptable for a business to be run like this and take advantage of a young couple trying to get their start. That $500 hurt a lot back then. I've been a customer at American Diamond Exchange for 25 years. The quality of the jewelry is exemplary, the employees are well educated in gemology and metals, uniquely creative in their designs and they have always been so gracious to me. You know the minute you walk in there that this is no ordinary jewelry store. Every piece of jewelry, even a style you may not care for, is stunning and even an uneducated eye can see they are made with high quality gold, platinum, precious stones and gems. There is no junk or low quality items anywhere in this store. The people here spend time with you, they educate you because they know the more you understand, the more likely it is you will be happy with your purchase or original design. I've never been "pushed" into buying anything, they simply don't do that. They depend on the honesty of the customer when offering you choices. Never are they offended if you indicate you don't like something they've presented and they go out of their way to find pieces you do like. Sometimes customers don't know what they want so they work with you and find out what you can't yet articulate. Each original design they have made for me has been better than what I imagined. These people know what they're doing. In my opinion and experience, this is the best jewelry store in the state, no question. read more

After being a loyal customer of jewelry repair for 10 years, I can say I will never return. In the past, I exclusively worked with Lee with no issues whatsoever, he recently reitred. My most recent visit I had to work with Alli on a resizing of a silver ring. She said she would solder "bumps" to the inside of the ring, but the oxidation would come off. Alli told me it would not be a problem because she could reoxidize the ring. When I picked up the ring the "bumps" were way too big and uncomfortable and the oxidation was completely off. When I brought up my disappointment she was rude, unwilling to work with me, and refused to let me speak to her coworkers. When I asked to speak to the owner she informed me that he no longer wanted my business. This should have been an inexpensive, easy fix. Now the ring is ruined, money wasted, and The American Diamond Exchange does not care. I would recommend taking your business elsewhere. read more
