This is a great place to take any American Heart Class-- BLS, PALS and ACLS. I've taken them all multiple times and learn something every time. Most of my classes have been taught by the owner John. He's a paramedic who was in the field for many years. He is practical and has entertaining stories that enhance learning and really tie things together. I am confident the equipment is clean and the environment is supportive and encouraging. Registration is super easy and cards are processed in a few days and retrieved online. There are a few places in ABQ that provide AHA training, but I would not have kept coming here for the past 8 years if this wasn't worth my time and my money. Most importantly, we practice the actual medical skills as a resuscitation team in these classes; drawing up medications (sterile water in this case) and double checking correct dose with classmates... The quality of knowledge and examples of real world experiences is quite literally second to none. They do what they say teach you what you need to know in a potential life saving situation. As someone who has experienced dire situations the examples were on point. They are courteous, respectful and funny. I took both a BLS and an ACLS class here back in 2017. I will say the BLS class was excellent. The instructor was quite knowledgeable and actually worked well with students to make sure we were understanding the material. ACLS was a completely different story. John is the only instructor for both ACLS and PALS, and I was incredibly disappointed with his class. He was condescending and made jokes that were completely inappropriate for a professional learning environment. He was reluctant to receive input from his students and on more than one occasional told me I was wrong about Albuquerque Ambulance's protocols despite the fact I had been studying with an AAS paramedic, eventually pulling me out into a hallway to demand that I stop "teaching his class with wrong information". After submitting the anonymous evaluations at the end of class, he followed me back to my car and asked me why I gave him a poor review. It is unfortunate there are no other AHA certified ACLS or PALS courses in NM, and I will be taking PALS out of state because my experience here was so negative. read more

The quality of being a great teacher is hard to define, but when a student leaves a class marveling at how much knowledge they have gained, how fun and engaging the instruction was, and the fact that a four hour class flew by in the blink of an eye, then that student knows they have been fortunate indeed. Fortunate to have been under the tutelage of a remarkable teacher. Such is the case with Jeff at American CPR. He employs the Socratic method to great effect and keeps the entire class involved throughout. He is a wealth of real life applications for the class material and augmented the AHA DVD with more valuable information than I would have thought possible, without all the corporate doublespeak they managed to shove into their mandatory presentation...I feel sorry for those who simply watch the video in their classes and miss out on Jeff's anecdotes and pop quizzes. Like anyone in the health care field, I've attended numerous CPR/AED/First Aid classes and this was undoubtedly the most enjoyable one I've been to. So even though the material is repetitious, the instructors work at making this class interesting by using relevant examples and a good sense of humor.
