Marty the Concrete Guy - Work in progress

    Marty the Concrete Guy

Marty and his assistant showed up on time and walked the project with me (replace asphalt carport pad 22x25' and 103' of new curbing for landscape block wall, suggested a few design ideas that I had not thought of and made a world of difference in the finished project. The proposal was complete and competitive including everything I asked for (demo and haul away, forming, rebar specifications, concrete specification and thickness, pumping, equipment) and spread stabilization rock that was not part of the primary effort. The team arrived when he said they would, during forming noticed an issue with drainage and offered a better approach and had the project ready to pour in two days. The results are beyond what I had hoped for, the finish and drainage on the carport pad are beyond words and show the efforts of craftsmen, they even put a finish on the exposed portion of the block foundation. Total time between estimate and completion was three weeks, cannot say enough about Marty and his crew!

Beware this contractor. He charges top dollar and does terrible work. In 45 years of managing home…read moreand large projects, he is the worst I've ever worked with. He put no water barrier under our porch slab and many places never dried even through North Fork's many 100 degree summer days. Now many places are permanently stained dark. It is UGLY. He blamed water pipes, but the water stains are all over, not just where there were pipes. He blamed a small leak in a small kiddie pool, but there were ugly spots far away from it, and after 4 months of the pool being drained and put away, it is still dark and ugly. He poured it so rain runs into the outdoor dining area, rather than away. He refuses to make good on any of this disaster! Do not under any circumstances hire this man!

I'm going to be writing a fantastic and lengthy review for this company but first, let me tell you…read morewho I am. I am a very anal perfectionist. I can drive my wife crazy with it. I have owned numerous homes, and I have personally remodeled all of them. I know how to do wood working, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, you name it. I have used numerous contractors over my lifetime for concrete and some interior framing, and I know all about the good ones and the bad ones. You won't go wrong by hiring these guys. I can honestly say that Greg, the owner of the company, is the best contractor I have ever hired. I'll get into how beautiful the work was but first I want to say a few things about how Greg runs his projects. First and foremost, you can expect to see him there every single day. That's huge in a number of ways; number one, you get immediate answers to your questions from the man himself. Number two, he's always there to make certain his workers are doing the job correctly (BTW, most owners aren't there much). Not that it was needed though, because his workers are absolutely talented, skilled, hardworking, kind, and very helpful. They know what they're doing and honestly don't require any supervision. But still, it's very nice to have the owner there every single day. How is it that Greg has the time to be there every day? Well, I asked that very question and that was when I found out that Greg only takes on one project at a time. That's huge. It means his workers and Greg himself are there every day and your project isn't delayed because one of the other projects is taking more time than anticipated. It means that things move along quickly. Though they're not actually family, they are family. They eat lunch together almost every day and Greg has had the same workers for the past twenty years because he treats them right. It shows. Let me say the most important thing about the work that Greg does. He does it the right way. He does not cut corners. I watched every step of our project and was absolutely thrilled with the meticulous way that they do things right, to include compacting DG (decomposed granite) in a lot of the areas they were going to pour cement. Almost all the previous cement projects I've had done, did not do that. They simply poured over bare dirt, sometimes without even compacting it. I did not ask Greg to do this, that is just how he does it. He does it right. Every step of the project, to grading properly and accounting for good drainage, and building retaining walls that will stand the test of time, Greg's way of doing things is the right way. I couldn't be happier with the work that I witnessed. Greg was very willing to hear my ideas and, in most cases, we implemented them. If we didn't it was because he gave me very good advice on why to not do it the way I was thinking. His workers were always watching and listening and more than willing to make things the way you want them. I can't say enough about the workers. We put in retaining walls and tore out our old pool deck and patio. I wanted the cement around the pool to have a border design around it. What they came up with was a 12" border that was Broom finished (faint, small straight lines), with the rest of the cement done with a Sweat finish (small half circle patterns). I mentioned that I was wanting the interior control joints (cement control joints, are intentional, planned gaps cut or placed into concrete to guide cracking along a straight line rather than randomly) to be run at a 45 and not horizontal and vertical. Our pool is curvy and not rectangular or square. Greg talked me out of the 45's due to this fact but then his workers, on their own, came up with a much better solution. They made the control joints wavy and curvy as well. They brought me out to make certain I liked it (they would have changed them if I didn't) I ABSOLUTELY loved what they came up with, and mind you, it was without my prompting. What they did was artistry at its finest. It turned the control joints into a visual feature and not just a functional thing. The retaining wall is absolutely gorgeous. All of the cement is absolutely gorgeous. The workers go above and beyond what is expected. I found Greg to be very easy to work with. I found his pricing to be very fair, especially considering the fact that they go above and beyond what most cement contractors do. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend them to you.
