I was looking for someplace that uses a straight razor for a shave and American Barber Lounge came highly recommend. I made an appointment through their website and found parking on the street next to their business. Upon entering the owner Scott was extremely welcoming and invited me to have a seat. I asked for a haircut and a shave and it was by far the most professional haircut experience I have experienced. Scott was polite, and explained everything before he did it. The salon is in the Ghent area of Norfolk and the artwork and jazz music playing really added to the experience. I would recommend this barbershop to anyone looking for an experienced barber, the prices are more than fair! read more

I'll start with the reference picture. What I showed him, looks absolutely nothing like what I got. Told him to keep the top long and it was past my nose beforehand. Now it is shorter than my eyebrows. Crap job on the fade, missed several spots. faded the sides way higher than what I asked. didn't shave/trim around my ears or neck. asked him to trim the back and he didn't touch it at all. Probably the worst haircut I've ever had. If someone asks for something you can't do, you should be honest with them before you screw up their hair. read more

Not bad but i asked him to leave the hairline natural and he said "I got you" and proceeded to push my hairline all the way back. Mind you, my hair is already thin and receding so this really set me back. Paid 28 bucks. read more

I was a rush to get a hair cut since I was only in town for a few days. I messaged a few places on Yelp and Scott was the first to message me. I was also on a time crunch, but Scott was able to hook me up with a time slot. I drove over, popped in, and he got me cut. Gave me a decent cut too. Talked about life and all that jazz... like you would at any other gentlemans barber shop. I'd consider coming back, for sure. read more

Scott is a well mannered, easy to get along with guy who truly knows what he's doing. Cost effective, timely and detail oriented is the name of his game and I'll be a regular from now on. read more

Scott is great. His haircuts are excellent and he cares about his customers. He made me and my family feel very welcome.

Anthony was great, I came about this barber shop from DoorDash. I had dropped some food off to his coworker and he asked me who cuts my hair. He asked me to follow him and when I did I noticed he cuts really good to say the least. Something came about and I just thought I should give him a shot and man let me tell ya, I'm glad I did. Great cut, great atmosphere, cool guy to speak with and I love that he follows the word of god and really shows his practice. 5 out of 5 stars is most definitely worth it. Check him out. Also being military and in real estate looking professional is very important so hats off to the service. read more

American Barber Lounge - Car interior. And a good lookin haircut - Barbers Near Me - Norfolk, Virginia

Walk in service. Haircut was great with meticulous attention to detail. Excellent service overall.

Terrible hair cut , I find it funny how you're ranked one of the best barbers in Norfolk but I walk in , I'm respectful I show you my reference picture and you take a glance at it then say you're good and I walk out totally unpleased , I've never had such a bad haircut especially after being shown a reference picture , totally unprofessional, you took 15 minutes on my hair , I would never refer you to anyone , I feel played lmao 30$ for a fucking haircut I could've done better myself and I don't cut hair , i knew from the jump you were playing lmao like from the moment you started cutting my hair I knew it was gonna be a disaster, if I could leave a negative number I would , I honestly see the pictures on here and want to know what was it about me that pissed you off. Was it cause I'm white?? You'll never get anywhere in life cutting hair like this. Take care !! read more

If you want detailed good hair cut and beard trim I think you shouldn't go to this place. The guy who cut my hair was working so sloppy and ripped my scalp off and cut my neck many times with trim machine and didn't even clean my neck good. read more

Very nice individual running the place. Got a good cut for a good price. Would definitely go again.

Great haircut really cool place next to cafe Stella. Friendly, great scheduling system, Scott is a very talented barber and fast!

Scott is the man! I moved out here 4 months ago for the Navy and I hate getting my haircut on base cause 1 out of 3 times they mess up. But every time I come here, he always cuts it great! I recommend this place to anyone else who is tired of the NEX barbers and want a great affordable haircut! read more

Great work with reasonable prices! I move around a lot and always have to find a new barber when I get to a new place. This process usually takes me a lot of trial and error until I find the perfect place. American Barber Lounge was my first try and it will be my go to shop while I'm here. The atmosphere is very relaxing and I am very pleased with the cut. read more

Edit: I went back the same day and the owner agreed it was a bad haircut and offered to fix my hair gratis in a couple of weeks once enough had grown back to make it fixable. He did his best to personally fix the mistakes his employee had made that day and it looked slightly better as a result. To his credit, he also reimbursed me and took some pictures to show his employee how to improve in the future. I'm going to leave the initial review bellow, but the owner did a great job trying to fix the situation. I should have stopped the guy as soon as he FORGOT which side I told him my part was on (something any real barber should be able to tell at a glance). He proceeded to make 3 more mistakes, completely refusing to follow my directions in each case. Finally after spending half an hour trimming the sides of my head (while taking no length off the top- as instructed) he asked if that was good. When I told him I needed an inch off the top he took his electric razor and proceeded to try to completely shave the top of my head. I had to tell him to stop. My hair is now ruined for weeks. read more

I don't ever leave reviews but this haircut is top 5 worst I've ever had. I was genuinely sad when I saw it. He messed my hair up bad, that I've been trying to grow out for months. I said I wanted to grow the top out, and at the end of the haircut I asked if he could just take the dead ends off maybe a MM, and he took more than an inch off and left one side longer than the other. He didn't take his time, felt very rushed like he was just trying to get it done. I would never recommend. read more

Worst haircut I think I've ever had. Unfortunately my actual barber had to move, but I needed a haircut so I thought I'd give this place a try. I came in yesterday for a simple taper on my sides and neck. I even showed the guy a reference photo of exactly what I wanted. Scott pushed my hairline almost an entire inch back when we went to line me up, messed up my part, and left a bunch of random long hairs that are so out of place, completely not blended. The actual fade isn't the worst, but my hairline makes it look like i'm balding. I'm a woman so this is just wild to me that someone would do this to anyone. I asked for something very simple, I don't understand why you would think it's okay to push someones hairline so far back just for a simple line up. And you can't even fix this line up, I'll just have to wait a month for my hair to grow back. But all these random long hairs in my part make me look like a porcupine. It's just so so bad I couldnt believe it. Two thumbs down. Going somewhere else to get this fixed. If you go here, then good luck. I never feel the need to review anything, but this blew my mind. I left photos you can see where my actual hairline is and my sides and how there's just chunks of hair that was left uncut, not blended read more

Found American Barber Lounge randomly while searching for a spot to get my Dad's haircut for a wedding. We couldn't be more happy with the result. Scott gave him the best haircut he has had in about 20 years. The value for the quality is amazing. You could easily pay 50 to 100 bucks in New York City for the same quality work Scott puts in for a fraction of the price. The attention to detail is impeccable and I highly recommend this shop. And don't forget to tip your barber! Thank you so much for everything Scott! It was so great meeting you and Angela! read more

I called Scott on Sunday for a same day appointment and he was booked all day. I asked for his next availability knowing he was closed on Monday and Tuesday. He gave me the 6pm appointment on Wednesday. I showed at 5:50pm. He invited me to sit in his shop while he finished another customer cut. About 6:10 he told me that another customer had a 6pm appointment and that I would need to wait outside in the waiting area. Apparently the other customer had "priority" because his appointment was made online and mine was a phone appointment. I am appalled that despite an appointment ,regardless of it being phone or online, I was asked to wait for another cuAdditionally I was there 10 minutes prior to my appointment and Scott made no mention of a double booked appointment. This was potentially my second haircut with Scott but I will NOT be returning. Scott, your reply was quite absurd. 1.) what does a military presence have to do with double booking? If you're double booking frequently then you have a serious scheduling issue that shouldn't impact your customers. 2.) I had already waited nearly 20 mins sitting in your shop before you told me I had to wait for another customer. Why didn't you tell me when I walked in the door? And to say I would only have waited 10 minutes is a lie. This isn't my first haircut with you. It would have been at least 30 minutes and the next customer hadn't even sat in the chair yet. 3.) There's plenty of barbers in town that will provide a quality haircut to include proper scheduling. So I recommend you get your scheduling act together or you may find your business suffering. And lastly this society has also become one of not accepting blame or responsibility for their faults. You sir are doing just that. You could have apologized and admitted double booking was wrong. And that a customer waiting almost 20 minutes before being told he would have to wait even longer was also wrong. You somehow twisted the entire encounter so that you were blameless and I was at fault. For that reason I will never step foot in your shop. Hopefully for your benefit your scheduling will rise up to the level of your hair cutting ego. read more

Just transferred here for job from Pittsburgh. Needed a good barber that was familiar with doing pomp/quiff cuts. Yelp pointed me to this place as the place to go, so I here I am. Was easily able to schedule a appointment online through the shops website (which is a big plus in my book). Scott has a cool little hole in the wall spot and he knows his way around hair. Gave him a pic of what I was looking for and he made it happen. Quick, efficient, and on top of the game. Will definitely be returning here in the future while I'm working in Virginia. I don't give many 5 star reviews, but when a place is a 5, it's a 5 earned. read more

***Please remove my contact information from your response, seeing that you have such respect for your customers, or are you trying to bully a customer or intimidate someone?**** Failed to keep the appointment through his website. So to say this guy can cut or not I can't be the judge. Seems like he's okay with just going through the motions and doesn't seem to care about the customer or creating repeat customers. Took a walk in customer before even checking to see if his 7 o'clock appointment was in the lobby. When I called to see if I was in the wrong place or if there was more barbers, I was blamed for the reason he took the walk in. Mind you he never stepped foot in the lobby to look for his customer who had the appointment. Sadly this was a waste of time. ***Please remove my contact information from your response, seeing that you have such respect for your customers, or are you trying to bully a customer or intimidate someone?*** You walked your client (who was in the chair getting a cut prior to our appointment) out after you were done with him. While said client was in the chair I used the intercom to ring your booth. Once the previous customer was done you then proceeded to welcome the other individual (walk in) in from the lobby and into your booth. Without asking his name, or if he had an appointment. It has nothing to do with the uniform you wore or that I wear now sir, it has to do with your business and how you failed to keep an appointment with a customer. I have no personnel grudge against you, I don't know you from Joe on the corner. You very well may be the best barber in Newport News, and I may be missing out. I wish no ill will toward you, and to put my information out like that is very unprofessional as a retired veteran, and most importantly as a business man. read more
