I was looking for someplace that uses a straight razor for a shave and American Barber Lounge came highly recommend. I made an appointment through their website and found parking on the street next to their business. Upon entering the owner Scott was extremely welcoming and invited me to have a seat. I asked for a haircut and a shave and it was by far the most professional haircut experience I have experienced. Scott was polite, and explained everything before he did it. The salon is in the Ghent area of Norfolk and the artwork and jazz music playing really added to the experience. I was a rush to get a hair cut since I was only in town for a few days. I messaged a few places on Yelp and Scott was the first to message me. I was also on a time crunch, but Scott was able to hook me up with a time slot. I drove over, popped in, and he got me cut. Gave me a decent cut too. Anthony was great, I came about this barber shop from DoorDash. I had dropped some food off to his coworker and he asked me who cuts my hair. He asked me to follow him and when I did I noticed he cuts really good to say the least. Something came about and I just thought I should give him a shot and man let me tell ya, I'm glad I did. I don't ever leave reviews but this haircut is top 5 worst I've ever had. I was genuinely sad when I saw it. He messed my hair up bad, that I've been trying to grow out for months. I said I wanted to grow the top out, and at the end of the haircut I asked if he could just take the dead ends off maybe a MM, and he took more than an inch off and left one side longer than the other. Edit: I went back the same day and the owner agreed it was a bad haircut and offered to fix my hair gratis in a couple of weeks once enough had grown back to make it fixable. He did his best to personally fix the mistakes his employee had made that day and it looked slightly better as a result. To his credit, he also reimbursed me and took some pictures to show his employee how to improve in the future. I'm going to leave the initial review bellow, but the owner did a great job trying to fix the situation. I should have stopped the guy as soon as he FORGOT which side I told him my part was on (something any real barber should be able to tell at a glance). He proceeded to make 3 more mistakes, completely refusing to follow my directions in each case. Finally after spending half an hour trimming the sides of my head (while taking no length off the top- as instructed) he asked if that was good. When I told him I needed an inch off the top he took his electric razor and proceeded to try to completely shave the top of my head. I had to tell him to stop. Worst haircut I think I've ever had. Unfortunately my actual barber had to move, but I needed a haircut so I thought I'd give this place a try. I came in yesterday for a simple taper on my sides and neck. I even showed the guy a reference photo of exactly what I wanted. Scott pushed my hairline almost an entire inch back when we went to line me up, messed up my part, and left a bunch of random long hairs that are so out of place, completely not blended. The actual fade isn't the worst, but my hairline makes it look like i'm balding. I'm a woman so this is just wild to me that someone would do this to anyone. I asked for something very simple, I don't understand why you would think it's okay to push someones hairline so far back just for a simple line up. And you can't even fix this line up, I'll just have to wait a month for my hair to grow back. But all these random long hairs in my part make me look like a porcupine. It's just so so bad I couldnt believe it. Two thumbs down. Going somewhere else to get this fixed. If you go here, then good luck. I never feel the need to review anything, but this blew my mind. I called Scott on Sunday for a same day appointment and he was booked all day. I asked for his next availability knowing he was closed on Monday and Tuesday. He gave me the 6pm appointment on Wednesday. I showed at 5:50pm. He invited me to sit in his shop while he finished another customer cut. About 6:10 he told me that another customer had a 6pm appointment and that I would need to wait outside in the waiting area. Apparently the other customer had "priority" because his appointment was made online and mine was a phone appointment. I am appalled that despite an appointment ,regardless of it being phone or online, I was asked to wait for another cuAdditionally I was there 10 minutes prior to my appointment and Scott made no mention of a double booked appointment. This was potentially my second haircut with Scott but I will NOT be returning. Scott, your reply was quite absurd. 1.) what does a military presence have to do with double booking? If you're double booking frequently then you have a serious scheduling issue that shouldn't impact your customers. 2.) I had already waited nearly 20 mins sitting in your shop before you told me I had to wait for another customer. Why didn't you tell me when I walked in the door? And to say I would only have waited 10 minutes is a lie. This isn't my first haircut with you. It would have been at least 30 minutes and the next customer hadn't even sat in the chair yet. 3.) There's plenty of barbers in town that will provide a quality haircut to include proper scheduling. So I recommend you get your scheduling act together or you may find your business suffering. And lastly this society has also become one of not accepting blame or responsibility for their faults. You sir are doing just that. You could have apologized and admitted double booking was wrong. And that a customer waiting almost 20 minutes before being told he would have to wait even longer was also wrong. You somehow twisted the entire encounter so that you were blameless and I was at fault. For that reason I will never step foot in your shop. Hopefully for your benefit your scheduling will rise up to the level of your hair cutting ego. read more

Just transferred here for job from Pittsburgh. Needed a good barber that was familiar with doing pomp/quiff cuts. Yelp pointed me to this place as the place to go, so I here I am. Was easily able to schedule a appointment online through the shops website (which is a big plus in my book). Scott has a cool little hole in the wall spot and he knows his way around hair. When I called to see if I was in the wrong place or if there was more barbers, I was blamed for the reason he took the walk in.
