Restaurant Mexicano
I'm Jonesin' for Mexican food. Bad. I…read moreusually eat it 4-5 times a week at home in Dallas. I've been in Holland for a week and I'm breaking out in a cold sweat. Leaving the central station in Rotterdam, I see a sign saying Mexican food. A small innocent sign. If I don't get in there soon I'm gonna drown in my own saliva. Mariachi music is playing inside the restaurant. We seem to have the right genre. I order a margarita, frozen. They know what it is and they have it! It's not half bad, but it's a little syrupy and I'd say frozen is an exaggeration. But still, so far so good. So I tell the waitress that I usually have chips and salsa as a preamble to my Mexican meal, or words to that effect. She points at 6.5 euro Nachos on the menu. I'm thinking more like ... free. Chips. Salsa. No lo se. Just when it seemed all was lost her compadre turns the corner with .... Chips, salsa. The chips are basically Doritos and the salsa, well it's probably bottled. But it ain't ketchup which I consider a major advance in European Mexican food technology. (It still cost 6.5 euros though.) With some trepidation, I order crunchy beef tacos. I also ask for a glass of water. She brings me essentially a shot glass of water. I consider downing it in one gulp and shouting "Salud!', but I resist the impulse. And here come the tacos! And you know what? They look like real tacos! Crispy corn tortillas filled with seasoned ground meat, lettuce (not cabbage - are you listening Poland? Yeah I'm talkin' to you Kraków). And melted grated cheese on top. They even resisted the urge to use some crazy cheese ( they've got lots of that here) and used cheddar. These tacos were accompanied by pinto beans. No, not refried. No jalapeños were harmed in the making of these beans, but still, pretty good! Lastly we have rice. Unfortunately it's not Mexican rice, but long grained rice with seasoning from.... India? Indonesia? I'm not sure. Google Maps was a little fuzzy on this but it was definitely centered somewhere over Asia and no where near Central America or Texas. Total damage: 33.40 Euro. Outrageous by Texas standards, but when ya gotta have, ya gotta have it. So in conclusion, not too shabby! I'll give it 2.5 sombreros out of 5 for Texas, but 4 out of 5 for Holland. At least it should tide me over for another week here. When I get home I'm going straight to El Fenix!
