Unfortunately, her stay was marked by disappointment and several eye-opening incidents. Upon admission, I was concerned that no transportation was provided, forcing me to transport my non-mobile wife myself from the hospital to The Rehabilitation Institute of Southern Illinois. We then experienced a significant delay in receiving assistance upon arrival at the facility, and I ultimately had to move my wife to her room myself to prevent exposure to freezing temperatures. The initial room assignment was also problematic, as a visibly and verbally upset individual appeared outside our room, disputing the placement of a bed. The head nurse intervened and resolved the issue. I was also alarmed to discover that it took 7 minutes and 22 seconds to receive assistance after pressing the call light. I immediately expressed my concerns to the nurse and negotiated an agreement to place a seizure rescue inhaler next to my wife's bed as a precautionary measure. I emphasized to the head nurse that patients with epilepsy are unlikely to self-administer medication during the initial phases of a seizure. The staff seemed uninformed about treating patients with epilepsy, citing a targeted response time of 5 minutes after a patient presses their call light. However, this is inadequate, as a seizure typically lasts between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, and a seizure lasting 5 minutes is considered a medical emergency. I was so concerned that I sent a letter to the CEO, highlighting the need for improved protocols, including the installation of video cameras in patient rooms to enable visual checks. I also suggested that the current response time is inadequate and potentially life-threatening. Unfortunately, I did not receive a response. Furthermore, the nurses' aids we encountered during Tiffany's stay were unprofessional and inexperienced. For example, when my wife requested to be moved to her chair to eat the morning meal, she was told 'no' in a flat and direct manner, and the aid promptly left the room, shutting the door forcably behind her. This behavior frightened my wife, who sent me the following desperate text: Please hurry please please! I cannot believe how I was just treated! I'm afraid PLEASE hurry Babe! When I arrived at the facility, the head nurse informed me that my wife was lying, as the aid denied the incident. The matter was essentially dismissed, with the only consequence being that the aid would not visit my wife's room again during her stay. In conclusion, while the facility is relatively new and in good condition, the staff seems divided, resulting in poor service. For instance, the facility did not have access to the seizure medications my wife was taking, forcing me to bring in the missing medications, which was a nightmare to get approved. True leadership is needed to address these issues, and if not addressed promptly, I fear that we may be reading about a tragedy instead of a remarkable recovery story.

My wife has been in this Center for 3 full days. We are now on day 4 now. The staff for speech,…read moreoccupational, and physical therapy are wonderful, attentive, and reliable..so far. I am only giving two stars because of the people who do therapy. The larger issue is the nurses, techs, and basically everyone else who is there to care for your loved ones in-between therapies. The responsivness for bathroom breaks (especially when they are given drugs that make them go #2 more) , water refills (hydration), bed alarms (if you get up and are not supposed to), and pull cords in bathrooms is, in a word, HORRID. My wife, as an example, hit the call button (which isn't a 2-way communication system. It just sends an alert that a room needs help. I'll come back to that, and then someone is to come help) and it took them 15 mins to come get her to go potty. Then they had to put her belt on and make her use a walker even though she was about to explode, and then LEFT HER there (not supposed to) on the toilet and when she pulled the cord in the bathroom to come get her they left her sitting there for 30 MINS. Her legs fell asleep. The level of responsiveness at this facility is akin to a bill getting passed in government. It takes a LONG time. They have almost no sense of urgency. I walked by the nurses station as I heard alarms going off for rooms literally a stones throw away, and they were engaged in conversations and laughing, like the world around them fell away. As if the nurses station was magically surrounded by a soundproof barrier. I'm going to be doing everything I can to get her the F out of there and at least I know at home that my kids and I will be taking better care of her in between her therapies and they could possibly even think of. If I were you and I had a choice of a place to take my loved one to a rehabilitation center, I would avoid BJC or Encompass health facilities at all costs. The healthcare at BJC wasn't much better when it was getting towards time for her to check out they acted like she was a pariah. They even left her at the exit of the building sitting on a stool, not in a wheelchair, to put in a car because they needed the wheelchair back and I had to basically help her get to the car they couldn't even have the decency to wait for her. So, it seems that anywhere related to BJC is something to avoid, unfortunately.
