This might rather be a long & sentimental review. But the experience at this quaint little…read moreBiergarten was humbling. I got a Schumacher Alt and Weiner alt Schnitzel naturally. The beer was smooth like water to drink, malty and very faintly hoppy. Which is good. The Schnitzel with roasted Kartoffeln and salad on the other hand has left me speachless. I have not had anything like this. It was simply delightful. The potatoes I swear to God have been the best I have ever had anywhere on this planet. Nothing like this in the US, nothing like this in India. No sir. The potatoes were delicately soft at the core but somehow faintly roasted, with like a thin charred skin which had a loads of flavour and with bits of bacon, and pieces of scallions. Oh dear God they were good. I'm going to have dreams. The Schnitzel- it got consumed in a blitz. The portions are huge. But it got consumed in a blitz. Salad - never considered it as a serious item for sides when eating out. And has always been disappointing. But this salad had been devoured. Not sure if it had sauerkraut, cabbage of some sort. Definitely not just pieces of Romain lettuce and ranch. It was a very tasty salad. Now for the most important part: The gratuitous, warm, comforting and welcoming treatment I received from the staff. I recently moved to this city and I do not know German. After entering the restaurant, the elderly gentleman very kindly welcomed & explained, as much possible, the different seating arrangements. Both the waitresses on the way, warmly greeted and welcomed me. This felt good. A waitress then attended my table conversing naturally in Deutsch. She sensed my inability and put me to ease at once saying it's no problems at all, take your time. Genuinely understanding. After that it was a peaceful & satisfying moment in the restaurant. I am really thankful to their service and the food. As everyone has reviewed, they are homely, cozy and comforting This was the first German dinner in Deutschland and it was worth the awkwardness and initial discomfort. I look forward to visiting more places in this city :)

Mind you, the railway station bars in Germany are somewhat different to the ones in Australia, namely that they all tend to be dive bars. Well, they aren't as bad as some of the dive bars that I encountered in Germany, but they certainly weren't all that enthusiastic. Namely you get a pretty bland assortment of drinks, and depending on the time of day you turn up, you might even land up with the end of shift crew, which isn't always a pleasant thing.

The mashed potatoes are really hand-mashed instead of puréed, which is a definitive bonus. The waiters were nice and fast. Whenever I'll have some time for food in Düsseldorf, I'm sure to return. Sehr lecker!
