We booked this place through Gate 1 travel, and really should have done more research. It's very…read moreunderwhelming from the minute you pull into the car park. Old facade, bad parking situation, and it's in the middle of nowhere. It totes view of the vineyards, which it does not have, but it really should just say it's in the farmland area of Hirschberg, which is a very small village.
So, gripe #1 is that they advertise free WiFi, but in reality, the WiFi is so bad that you can't access the internet, email, apps, really anything. So when I complain to the front desk their resolution was for me to upgrade all of our devises to their "premium" WiFi. So just a bait and switch thing. We are from the US, so WiFi was important in communicating with family back home.
Gripe #2 - They have no deadbolt on the room doors!!! So, anyone who gets their hands on a room key card can get in your room. You have to remember, you're in a foreign country, and at a fairly shady hotel establishment, so safety is kind of important. We had to wedge the desk chair under the door handle to secure it at night. Really shady and not a good experience.
Gripe #3 - When we booked, Gate 1 says that parking is included. When we show up to check in, they say it's 4 euro per night for parking. Not a huge cost, but just another example of the nickel and dime operation they run.
Gripe #4 - The "on site" restaurant leaves A LOT to be desired. Very small menu of mediocre food. Then one night when we got back late to the hotel around 8:30 pm, we tried to get dinner on site, and they say they only have a "limited menu" that night. She gives us a menu that had 4 options. One was a caesar salad, one was Ben & Jerry's ice cream, and another was a bread and cheese plate. So we had to go back out to find somewhere to eat, and did I mention that this place is in the middle of nowhere???
Gripe #5 - The place is in dire need of updating. The maroon carpet that they brag about on the website looks like it's 20 years old. Full of stains and wear marks all over the place. Didn't even want to walk in my room without socks on. Halls are very dingy and gross. I really felt more like I was staying in a hotel in eastern europe where we were going to be abducted at night.
Gripe #6 - No air conditioning. Seriously, in August it's in the high 80's. Laying in a bed sweating your butt off with with windows open sucks. It's 2017. Instal AC.
To sum up, do yourself a HUGE favor and book somewhere else. If you're having second thoughts, re-read "gripe #2" above.
