Holy hell, if this place doesn't do it for you, I don't know what will. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and feel it. The spirituality of the alps. Unforested, unsettled and so pristine. Moon Lake! This is one of the largest privately owned lakes…read morein all of Austria! This is such a beautiful place - an alpine lake out in the middle of the Alps. I didn't go in, but the water looks cold. Since it's owned privately, Nicolette Wächter owns it, she decided that it shall be open to the public, but off limits to people with motorized vessels. So this makes it a quiet mountain lake, where you gotta go slowly. I'm sure all the fish appreciate the quiet too! There's some excellent views of and around this lake. It makes me wanna yodel. There's some sort of legend behind this lake that involves people wading out in to the lake on horseback and almost drowning if it weren't for the moon. So since it's also somewhat shaped like a crescent moon, they named it Moon Lake. I don't think Moon River flows into Moon Lake. According to Wikipedia, this lake is also mentioned in a James Bond novel!

We were driving by on Route 166 and we'd seen some pictures of this lake so we decided to make a…read moreshort detour and see it. The road from Gosau to the lake was beautiful and probably worth the detour alone. Anyway, we got yo the lake and it was beautiful. There was a small parking lot, a souvenir stand or two, and a lodge where you can get a snack and maybe something more. On the way there we saw a couple ski lifts, and I think there was one at the end of the road. Overall it is a pretty place and a good place for a quick stop.

The Boat rides leave from the tip of the Konigsee, and can be taken to One or Two spots for a different affordable price. Its a beautiful ride through the lake in the mountains. The entire tour is in German so if you don't speak the language you won't really know what's going on, but no need to as the ride is a reward in itself. Be sure to get to the Docking stations early so that you have time to head out to St. Bartholomew etc. and Hike around. There is also a hofbrau haus directly next to the church to have a nice meal while you wait to return to Berchtesgaden. It's a must do while in this beautiful area of Germany. Take the ride, and listen to the amazing echo's of the trumpets off the mountain side. Highly recommended, and well worth the price.
