A very upscale and expensive department store. Back in the States it could be comparable to probably Bloomingdales or Saks Fifth Avenue, but when I glanced at the purse selection it doesn't look like they have some of the high end European brands for sale such as Burberry, Chanel, Prada, but luckily those boutiques are a short walk away. They mostly carry European brands but have some American brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Juicy Couture, 7 Jeans. I did see a decent handful of sales tags on every floor, but some of the items were still just too pricey. However, the Longchamp bags on sale were a deal. They also offer a food court and I picked up a ton of German chocolates to bring home in their basement confectionary department. This department has a variety of candies from some you can find at their local grocery and department store such as Kinder to Niederegger to California brand Jelly Belly. Overall I would recommend a stop by Alterhaus just to check it out. At least you can buy some chocolates if nothing else catches your eye. Alterhaus and another department store, Karstadt seem to be the one of the very few stores in the area that close at 8 instead of 7. read more

Alsterhaus is what Illum is in Copenhagen, but with a niceness scale that is way beyond Illum. A rather upscale department store that houses big famous designer brand and interesting decorations inside. It stocks everything from cosmetics (on the lower ground) to home decoration and even cafes, restaurants and food shop. I must add that I love their food shop, especially during Christmas times. Oh, I wanted to buy everything on display. Chocolates, cheese, wine, you name it. There are also areas where you could sit down and enjoy champagne *ahem* or just coffee. Customer service is friendly as far as I have encountered and they have gift-wrapping service on the home decoration floor (can't quite remember which floor was that - 4th?) and it's just located right in front of the lake, hence the name. Alsterhaus is Hamburg's posh department store. I've been in here dozens of times and only ever bought anything in the cosmetics department (at the Benefit, Clinique and OPI counters). They have lots of nice things, especially in the accessories department, but prices are seriously over-the-top here. I'm not into high-priced couture so it's hard for me to drop stars - I'm not their target market, it'd be like complaining that a gourmet restaurant doesn't sell onion rings. Alsterhaus does have it's place, though, especially with Hamburg's prominent shopping culture. I'll be glad to come back here for cosmetics or for seasonal sales. read more

The Alsterhaus ist placed directly near the Alster at the Jungfernstieg. At the entree there are all kinds of parfumes and it smells very strange. At the highest plattform there is a nice restaurant and a whine shop and much more. I like it here. The Alterhaus is no cheap place. read more

We visited the "Alsterhaus" last summer while friends from Bangalore stayed at our house for short vacation. It was my first visit there too and it was really amazing: i felt like a child locked in a candy store. It was the same with our friends. We stayed for about two an a half hour and there was far more to be seen. In the end i didnt even buy the summer-dress i planned to. Alsterhaus is a must-stop for everyone shopping in Hamburg for the first time, even though it probably is too expensive for a majority of people, but that's not the point. Alsterhaus is very nice to "window shop" in, especially in the gourmet section. For upmarket fashion brands you will obviously find abetter selection among the numerous shops and flagship stores the Neuer Wall and ABC-viertel, but it's still nice to have some good quality high-end brand under the same roof here. read more

ooooOoh, aaaaahh, wow, were the words of my 2 daughters when they descended the stairs to the world of sweeties on the lower ground floor. AlsterHaus is really something special. A true palace of consumption but whereas you expect snooty and patronising service in somewhere so elegant and well turned out the opposite is true. All the staff we came into contact were kind and friendly even when we were all marvelling at 20,000 euro fountain pens! They even gave our kids a couple of little free packets of Jelly Bellies. Clearly this had a longer term aim, nevertheless it did did the trick and I am sure I will be pestered to return next time they come back to Hamburg! A proper 5 star shopping experience. read more
