Very nice staff and affordable. However, I would not board our dog here again. Our dog was very excited to leave here and was not so happy that we left him. I feel HORRIBLE that we did and will not make this mistake again. It was clean but he was left with a bucket of water that did not look clean and something was floating in it when I picked him up. My family has been using Alsea Boarding Kennels since I was a little girl, and now I have my own family and take my dogs there too! I would say that this boarding facility is the best one I've ever used. The place is clean, the rates are reasonable, the dogs have ample room to move, the owner is very friendly and helpful, and she's on-site 24-7! If the dogs stay there 2 days or more, they bathe them before they leave. They also wash the bedding, etc. It's such a relief to board my dogs and not have to worry about them. First off, let me say that we're dog lovers. Meaning, we treat him like a child...as best we know how. We make him raw meat & veggie stew, feed him oil supplements, and only use no-grain kibble when we're out of the good food. Having said that... Pros: - Cheap! Only $14/day, including food (cheap lamb/rice or chicken/rice)...we obviously provided our own food - Owners are onsite, so they're reachable pretty much all day and night - Plenty of availability - Probably the only kennel in the area - Good size rooms Cons: - Not much interaction...there are brick walls between each cell...I didn't see the area that they supposedly get to walk around in thrice a day and interact, but I can't imagine it's anything special - The energy does not feel dog-welcoming here. Very gloomy and stuffy inside. Definitely down to the basics...no plants or any sort of nature-vibe. More like a jail cell. My guy was SO excited to get outta there after three days...he actually seemed a little traumatized from the visit, and it took him a minute to recognize me. I'd never recommend this place, although I'm sure many dog owners wouldn't have the same concerns. Hope this helps! read more

We have been taking our dogs to Alsea River Kennels for several years and have always happy with the care they receive. On one vacation our lab started throwing up and Deb immedialty called us to suggest she take him local vet. We discussed it fully with her and he improved within a few hours, so decided to just keep an eye on him. Deb went above and beyond and cooked a special blend of rice with meat for him. It's not a fancy dog spa, but a well run and maintened boarding kennel that I would recommend. read more

I have used Alsea Boarding Kennels for several years now for intermittent vacations where my Chesapeake Bay Retriever would not be a welcome participant. I have never had a bad experience with the kennel or staff. My dog is special to me, and I wouldn't continue to use this kennel if she didn't like it. She is always happy to enter the buidling here, and recognizes the staff with a wagging tail )( and they recognize her as well, though I don't see their tails wagging). Of course she's always very happy to see me when I come to pick her up as well. Many times when I come to get her, she is still damp from her bath. Her bath! What a wonderful extra benefit that is! I would recommend this kennel to anyone in the area, or coming to visit the area. The owner-operators are friendly, down-to-earth people who truly express a love for animals and pets. read more

I am a dog lover. I have used this place a couple of times. The people care about our dogs. I was shocked when we picked our boy up the first time. Because they bathed him lol. I have never had a dog bathed while being boarded. Yes they have cinder block enclosures, yes the dogs are isolated from other dogs. This place is set up to keep your dogs contained. With Alsea River Kennels you pay little and that's what you get! The previous reviewer gave a very good description of the facilities. I have to say, the gentleman who owns the place is a very nice person and he keeps the place clean. The problem is his outdated kennel philosophy (circa 1960's). Today, I feel like most pet owners expect the kennel staff to exercise and interact with their pets. This isn't that place. I had the owner walk me through his kennel and procedures. Dogs spend the majority of their time in the concrete walled kennels. A few times a day, the staff takes each dog (one-by-one) to a covered outdoor fenced in area with a concrete floor to relieve themselves. Dogs do not co-mingle. The owner said he only takes dogs outside to the grassy areas if they can't relieve themselves on the concrete pad. Man -that's rough! I cut my vacation short. read more

We've been taking our dogs here for 5-6 years. Owners are friendly and the place is always clean and quiet, they'll even work with you if you need to pick up or drop off early or late...even after hours, with no extra charge. They bathe your pup before pickup, and let them out of the kennels without charging extra. The price cannot be beat, but don't expect your dog to be fed gourmet food while lounging on a luxury bed. Bring your dog's food (why would you feed him something different, interrupting the diet, when in a kennel?) and a nice bed (which they also launder on pickup day), and you will not be disappointed. We feel very fortunate to have this kennel halfway between us and the valley area, where we frequently travel. The only reason it gets 4 stars, and not 5, is that the outside roaming areas are not real large. read more

I think that the previous reviews are unfair. It's like staying at a Motel 6 and then criticizing it for not being a Hilton. That you get what you pay for is considered good value. If you want the Hilton for your dog, then either choose a kennel that charges much more (to cover those costs) or hire a pet sitter. We've used Alsea kennels for overnight or weekend stays many times over the years and our dogs have never been traumatized for it. (No one loves their dogs more than we do, so don't even go there.) The couple who own and run the business are very accommodating (you will not find better in this regard) and they are on-site. We always supply our own food and always provide our own beds. You should too if you're concerned about your dog's comfort (switching food can cause intestinal distress if done abruptly). Many kennels don't interact with the dogs at all or charge you handsomely to do so (there is no additional charge at Alsea, but I bet if you needed more play time for your dog that could be arranged for additional money). Keep your expectations realistic and I'm sure you will be satisfied. read more
