This place is a blast from the past! You walk in and are seeing a ton of different brands of vacuums ready for you to try. Matt does the selling of the vacs and the sewing machines. He also does the repairs if you need help. When you go into the other room, it's full of sewing stuff! There are machines, fabric, needles...all the things :) I was originally asking about the Babylock Flourish 2 and Matt pulled it out of the box and set it up for me to try, lol. That was a little unexpected. Susie runs the sewing side and she explained everything the machine does and did some test embroidery. The vibe here is really cool and the people are really nice. Susie has private sewing lessons and a monthly calendar with group classes. There's one called the UFO class -- UnFinished Objects :) Very cool place. read more

I've know Matt and Sue Leone for many years even before I knew they had a family business. Once I found out about their vacuum and sewing business we've been faithful customers. Gone as the days of most individually owned business where you go get an appliance repaired. You might think your machine is dead or beyond repair. Often in going to Al's you'll find like me that what you have is made better than the current models. Case in point. Twice I've taken a 45 yr old USA made Hoover portable vac in for repair. Wonderful place. After we had done business for years here when it came to vacuums, my spouse recommended them when I was looking for a used sewing machine. I only needed something basic and didn't want to spend a fortune. For $79 I got way more than my money's worth, plus free bobbins and thread thrown in. Additionally, although I wasn't purchasing one of their new machines, I still qualified for their free on-site sewing lessons if I was interested. Owner Matthew was really nice and polite, extremely helpful in the selection process, and I'm guessing it was his wife Suzanne teaching some people to sew in the adjacent room. Look, you could do business with a big box store, but there is enormous charm, as well as a very high level of expertise and service when you shop with local places such as this. Al & sue are great. I purchased my baby lock spirit from them and was very happy. It was used but he gave me a 3 year service on it an was missing parts but Al told me no worries he ordered the parts an showed me how to use the machine. Sue sat with me and helped me embroider a few things so I felt. Comfortable before I left with machine am headed home. I came back out over the weekend and sue taught me how to make a pouch out of the hoop. Such a nice couple. Glad I found this place an I drove 1 1/2 hours to get here. read more

Brought in my mom's old sewing machine. I had originally taken it to another place in the SFV, but that place tried to rip us off and they lied to us. They only wanted money for nothing. Long story. So.... I decided to bring it to Al's. Not only were they 100% honest, but they were very nice and explained to us exactly what the problem was with the machine. If you're hoping for speedy, courteous service, look elsewhere. I called to order a part for my sewing machine on Thursday. I gave the information and was told I'd get a call back Friday to confirm and give my credit card information. No such luck. When I called back Saturday, and asked if that meant my order wouldn't ship out until Monday, I heard an earful about how it was a very busy store, with all those women bothering the man, how it was a very busy time of year after the holidays, how all those women were were interrupting him all day long and it was my responsibility to call back the next day if I hadn't heard back, etc., etc. Then the man hung up! Great place, the owners are nice & very helpful and it's so great to have a nice easy to access shop to help my vacuum last a long time. They sell used vacuums too, and there's a sewing store attached. I have known Matt and Sue for many years; I bought my first two embroidery/sewing machines from them. What I like about Matt is that he is straight up honest about what he can and cannot do. If he sells you a machine, he'll tell you right up front what problems he has seen with that particular model, and what to look for to prevent troubles. I watched him tell a customer that he hasn't had to repair any of the machines in that model, but that the previous version had a specific problem that showed up in the first year. He told her what to look for. This guy is good. I had an old Hoover that was amazing, we got it as a wedding gift and it worked great for 20 yrs and I still couldnt part with it. Took it to Als and he eeked 5 more years out of it. Bought a Kenmore vac to replace that one and it crapped out 2 yrs later. Took it to Als and he spent 2hrs on it only to discover a part had actually broken off and there was no replacement, so he and his son "built" a new part. Impressive. $45 out the door, works great . He was super helpful in recommending a new vacuum when I asked what he would suggest for my next vac. He said a SEBO, Id never heard of them, but when i went online, people say theyre amazing. I bought a vintage Singer Featherweight off eBay. When the machine arrived the thread tension knob was askew. I took it to Al's for service and general check-up. I figured I'd have a professional take a first look and let me know if something was really wrong with the machine. Matt serviced the machine and got it back to me in about 10 days. He told me it needed a few adjustments here & there, and the tension knob needed to be reassembled, but otherwise it was fine. Since I have a good idea of how easy it is to work with the old Singers, I felt the fee of $59 for service was a little steep, but they did a great job and I'm pleased with the result. read more

The proprietor called the next week and told me that he worked on it for a few hours and he didn't want to waste any more time on it. He couldn't fix it and did I want him to throw out my machine or I could come and pick it up. No charge. So I picked up my machine and took it to ACE sewing machine in Los Angeles. He has serviced my industrial sewing machine, home sewing machines, sergers and vacuum cleaners with much expertise--and has saved me several times from having to purchase expensive parts because of his amazing collection of spares. Al's Vac and Sew is the only place to bring your sewing and vacuum needs. The man is honest as the day is long. You may have to leave your machine for repair, but rest assured it is for good reason. He is an excellent trouble shooter and will find the problem. If it is worth fixing, he'll do it, if it needs adjustment, he'll do that too. If the problem can not be repaired and not worth replacing he'll be honest with that also. Same thing with sewing machines and sergers. There are no other repair shops in the Antelope Valley who can compare the service, integrity that you will receive from Al's Vac and Sew. First time ever coming to a Vacuum Repair Shop. Vacuum tube was clogged from Christmas needles and not sucking. He diagnosed it right away and took it straight to the back. He then cleaned it out and brought it back to the front to demonstrate how it was working again. Whole trip was about 15 minutes and only $10. I will definitely be coming here again. read more

Picked up my Viking Sewing machine today. It was in for service and I was having a tension problem when quilting with the free motion foot. I had not left my free motion foot with the machine, so Matt (?) loaned me one from his stock so I could try it to see if cleaning and adjusting the machine had done the trick. It had! I was going to drop my other machine, a small Babylock, as I was having tension problems with it too. He oiled and adjusted it, and fixed the problem. He did not charge me for this service, and I really appreciate not having to leave the machine, as I live about 1-1/4 hours away. The charge on my Viking was less than usual also.
