I stopped by Al's store today hoping to get my kayak steamcleaned before paddling in the reservoir. He let me know that he didn't have time, but graciously gave me the phone number for Gene and his wife who provide a shuttle service for one-day river trips (highly recommend them!) so I could paddle on the Delaware instead. However, while I was walking around Al's shop talking on the phone with Gene, I saw that he had a book casually sitting on one of his for-sale tables in front of the store titled 'Jews are the Problem,' which has a pretty self-explanatory premise. It would be a massive understatement to say I was disappointed to see this out in the open at Al's store, particularly in an area with the history that the Catskills has. I would urge potential patrons to bring their business elsewhere and not support this disgusting antisemite. read more

The man that works there was extremely friendly and helpful. The store is great to have, as there is really nothing else for miles around. They have camping equipment, fishing tackle, a small firearms maintenance section (though no guns/ammo that I saw), knives, furniture, clothing, nick knacks, bottled water, etc. They also run a motel across the street. The canoe rentals are extremely affordable! 45 bucks for half a day is really not bad. Also their parking lot has some of the only good cellular service in the whole region! read more

My friend and I were spending a night near the Pepacton Reservoir so I decided to call Als store about what we should do if we want to rent kayaks. A man answered and was extremely kind and helpful. He told me how to get a permit within 1-2 minutes. Price and to call ahead. We did just that as we were driving up and a women answered this time again being very kind. When we pulled up it was very easy to find. They have a ton of adorable wooden bird feeders ,Adirondack chairs and porch decor. Inside we were greeted by two gentlemen. He was very quick to have us pay and head out to kayak. Someone drove us 4 minutes up the road to show us where to take them out. It was beautiful and a short walk to do so. The kayaks are in really good condition and they had beautiful colors. Paddles were in good shape. I thought it would have a waterproof bin but it did not. I was about to bring a backpack and secure it well within my kayak though. It was a beautiful day and. The scenery is gorgeous. I highly recommend this store! read more

Al's was great! They were super helpful when we called and were planning our trip. The communication was clear, it was easy to reserve kayak's and they did a great job figuring out how to safely our cars to the end of the trip and get us back to the launch site and we felt like they were taking COVID precautions seriously (masks, riding with the windows downs and only with 1 person from Al's driving, cleaning the boats/vests, etc). read more

A group of 8 of us rented single kayaks from Al's for a trip down the Delaware. Al and his staff were very kind and helpful. We parked our cars down river where we would end the trip, and they carted us back up river to start. It was nice to be able to end right where we were parked. The trip down the river was great and the kayaks were solid. All in all, it was a great trip and we were very happy with Al's Sport Store kayaks and service. read more

We stopped in over the weekend while visiting the area. A local recommended that we try kayak fishing the Pepacton Reservoir which led us to the area of Downsville to find Al's. I was initially drawn to the store via Google search and found the store web site to have quite a bit of useful advise and info on area fishing. I figured if the website was helpful then they would probably be the same in the store. We spent some time talking to Mike on Saturday afternoon and he was very helpful in helping us find a different more suitable fishing spot (which I won't reveal! ) and getting us set up with the gear we needed. I found the prices to be very reasonable and we weren't pressured into buying anything that we didn't need. Whether you know the area or had never been (like us) I highly recommend checking out Al's for anything you need or info on what's biting where. read more

Really honest shop. We've been coming for the last few years for rentals and have always found exactly what we need and really good sound advice. Kayaks, Canoes, bait...just an all around good sporting shop with everything you need for the area. Fair prices for rentals and the location is perfect! AWFUL customer service that I have ever encountered, by far. First time call to make a reservation and was told "I have a REAL HUMAN" standing in front of me looking to buy furniture, can you call back in an hour?"....No problem, I get it, you have to deal with the people you have in front of you. Called back 2 hours later and was again met with a comment about having "actual people lined up", that he was "very busy", so I guess trying to make actual real reservations for 10 adults wasn't important business? read more

Al is an asshole. Our rental car broke down. We're 1347 miles from home WITH OUR CHILD and he would not offer any assistance or sell us fishing equipment to keep us busy on our more than 4 hour wait on a replacement car. While not his fault, he'd been closed 5 minutes could not give friendly directions/help and we had cash to buy a pole and license. THANKS Al for making these Texans feel welcome in Downsville. I can't say enough good things for Al's. We rented a canoe for what was meant to be a leisurely family trip down the East Branch, but shortly in the boat capsized and we lost the paddles. Al's was great in handling our recovery, picking us up on Rt. 30, not fussing about having to recover the boat which was left on the bank, and very gracious towards us as we paid for our lost paddles. We will definitely be back, but paddling on a lake next time. read more
