I still have the great Woolrich jacket (red plaid) I purchased here over a decade ago and have worn constantly--and last weekend, I got a cool hat to match it. In a time of cookie-cutter everything, I highly recommend stopping into Chauncey Stewart and picking up a few things. The folks here are very friendly and helpful; I know you'll enjoy your visit.

A shiny aqua Vespa sat in the sunny parking lot. Once inside, it's floor to ceiling and every nook of space inside countless curios of treasure. Tiny apothecary bottles with 19th century medicinal "cure" labels; taxidermy specimens of all sizes; antique plates; shaving brushes; modern swords, shuriken, even a batarang; glassware smoking paraphranelia; and a delightful selection of canes. The second room contains a wondrous wooden dry bar with red velvet and iron barstools where the owners sometimes sit with friends. Swords and animal heads are mounted on the walls. When George passed away last year, the business was purchased. The new owner has preserved and improved all the vintage aspects of the store, but the new inventory is something else! To die for! From women's clothing, to men's clothing, to children's clothing, accessories, fabrics, buttons & yarns, housewares, candles soaps, literally EVERYTHING is artistic, interesting (often unique) and tempting! Someone told me that they cull thru the donations and only keep the absolute best of the best. This is a new location which is larger than the old one and located in the center of Margaretville in a beautiful old building which is the cornerstone of the Village. They have frequent "Bag Sales" where you can fill a bag for a fixed price and also regular "2 for 1 sales". Many NYC visitors make sure they come to the Margaretville Thrift shop because of the quality and low prices.

I saw her opening the side door so politely asked if I should go in through the side or front and she exasperatedly said "the side is the ONLY way you can come in" - um ok sorry I do not magically know your community center thrift store layout. After that she did not speak, only glared at me as I uncomfortably took a minute to look around. I passed her as I was leaving and she full on heavily sighed at me for zero reason. Pretty sure this is a volunteer job so if she hates humans so much maybe she should just spend her retirement reading self help books trying to find some shred of happiness as she's clearly a miserable person to treat potential customers so terribly.
