River Valley Ranch - We had a blast!

My friend wanted to go horseback riding for her birthday, so we found this place and decided to go!…read moreThe path that you take is scenic! You get to know about the horse you're riding, and they give you a horse that's compatible with your riding experience. The only downside of our entire experience here was that it was a bit difficult to book. When we called, we were constantly redirected to call back again. But we got it figured out and everything went fine.

We made a reservation for a Sunday at 10am (when they open) in late October. They said the…read more12'oclock shift was full, so make sure to call ahead and make reservations. You can't call too far ahead though, because the riding is dependent on the weather. The trails that you ride through are muddy and can get flooded as well. Also, you are in the woods for 1-2hrs so dress for the weather. That includes bug spray or sunscreen if needed. I'd recommend going in the fall to avoid those things! Beautiful scenery, no bugs, and no overheating! They also mention to wear pants and closed toed shoes. There were a total of four of us and then the guide for the two hour trail ride. Keep in mind, there is no way to hear the guide up front unless you are right behind them but that was no big deal. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the river. They asked level of experience and picked the horses for us. If you aren't flexible, you'll have a hard time mounting the horse. I'm surprised they don't provide a stool for this.I watched this poor lady struggle to get on the horse and the worker had to help her up. Our legs were sore afterwards so I could see an hour being enough for young kiddos. Our horses were well behaved. Mine was sassy and I liked seeing that personality. Overall, a great experience!

Calling all bikers! If you have checked out the Gateway…read moreTrail, the Greenway and Cedar Lake Trail and are looking for something a little more quiet and rural feeling, this will be your jam! Leave your road bike at home and take out the cruiser, the cross or the mountain bike because this trail is crushed limestone the entire way. It is flat, shaded in parts, passing by lakes and between farm fields. Most of it you feel like you are out in the middle of beautiful nowhere. There is a parking lot at the trail head. There are porta-potty's strategically spaced along your ride. We came across maps occasionally. What was lacking were the hoards of people! Shhhhhhhhhhhh... maybe we should keep this a secret?! This trail goes 28.5 miles out to Winstead. Then you call a van to come get you? We didn't go that far as we had to make it back to the car at the trailhead. Twenty three miles round trip was plenty far for my burning legs. Whew. That was only half. I can only imagine how wonderful the other half might be. Someday... For those more hardcore, enjoy!!!!

Check the DNR website for entrances with parking lots and which areas are allotted for snowmobiles and horseback riding. The trail from Plymouth is crushed gravel and passes through mostly wetlands, hilly areas and light forests. There are some massive mansions not too far off on either side so you are advised not stray off the trails onto private property. The Long Lake entrance has a rough gravel parking lot and a porta potty!

So many memories with the Silver Buckle Saddle Club. I didn't live here in the early incarnation of…read morethis club but certainly showed plenty of horses at this Plymouth location. It's fun to see the juxtaposition of the horse arena and the neighboring communities. Sadly that same proximity may make it harder for people to experience horse shows in the metro area. Silver Buckle Saddle Club was founded in Plymouth, MN in 1964. By 1973, Plymouth was transforming into a suburb and the saddle club was forced to relocate to the northwest corner of Plymouth, it's current location on County Rd 47. This land was owned by Silver Buckle's founding father, Harlan Peterson (1922-2015). Harlan and the membership built the beautiful outdoor arena that has hosted horse shows for the last 44 years. When I stopped out at the property it does look like the saddle club is again facing the problem of urban sprawl. Silver Buckle hosts WSCA shows, UBRA/ PEWC barrel races, annual trail rides, and other special events for their members. The saddle club also partners with Hennepin Hoofbeats 4H club to provide a safe arena for the club to host horse shows and mounted meetings. Stop in and see one of the horse shows (schedule usually on their website) during the show season, you'll enjoy seeing the horses and riders.
