Last winter, I was recommended by my neighbor to use Mathnasium. She said that they gave her daughter the confidence to believe in herself and do better. Lessons are conducted on site. There is no assigned homework and so I have used this time for "me". It is much better monitoring his progress rather than fussing and getting upset when he doesn't get what I am trying to convey. After my son's first introduction day at Lead Mine Mathnasium, he loved it! He wanted to stay longer. Said he had fun! It's been 4 months now and he scored above average on his first math EOG earning a 5. Leo and Jeff have been very helpful in addressing my concerns when I see my son's completed homework for school. They follow up on his weak areas and definitely gave him the confidence he needed to move forward. Now my son knows he can do better and is reaping a bountiful summer for his great grades. We could not have done it without Mathnasium!

I highly recommend Mathnasium for students struggling in math. My older daughter attended 2 years…read moreago. She just did not understand math the way it was taught in her school. The tutor at Mathnasium tried 3 different approaches and found the one that clicked with my daughter. In 3 months, she went from failing to honor roll in math. When my younger daughter had the same problems in math, I signed her up for math tutoring 3x a week. I assumed that she would have the same success in the same time period. The math tutors showed me how Younger Daughter's challenges were very different than Older Daughter's challenges. These tutors have such patience! They kept working and working with her and never let on how frustrating it was to explain the same concept repeatedly. I knew that I couldn't do the same tutoring at home. They kept her interested in learning and never gave up on her. After a year of tutoring, my daughter finally, finally understood what they had been talking about and her math grades have been increasing ever since. Even before her grades improved, her frustration was reduced. The tutors are so encouraging and they have different ways of approaching the problem. The tutoring is also geared to her level so she doesn't feel left behind or the "stupid one" because all classwork has to stop because she needs yet another explanation. My daughter would jump out of the car and bounce into math tutoring. What better recommendation for a math tutoring than the happy face of my daughter? She loves the environment and I love the results.

Contained within one of the many buildings on NC State's Centennial Campus is a pretty amazing…read moreWildlife Center. With a self-guided tour, the Center takes you through North Carolina's wildlife and conservation efforts. It begins with a large satellite map of NC to give an overview of the vegetation or river and streams. From there, the exhibit map leads to the Wildlife section with its interactive push button displays for matching the animal with paw prints or bones. The Piedmont Portraits section is probably my favorite. There are three floor-to-ceiling displays of the Piedmont habitats with each display flanked by pictures of animals found in that area. As you push the button, a picture of an animal lights up and you hear the sound of that animal. Each panel takes you through a day's journey with simulated lighting and the animals most likely to be active at that time of day. Sometimes, sounds from the other displays play simultaneously - usually the bullfrog and toads -- as a reminder that some animals are everywhere. There was no talking, just the nature sounds. The Wetlands Section has a touch screen map for picking a county, an amphibian or reptile and then finding what is prevalent in that county. The Wetlands Overlook is my next favorite section. There are two cameras trained on bird feeders outside the windows near the man-made wetland area. Using the joystick, you can zoom in or move the cameras to watch the birds or just explore. There's an auditorium playing a short video overview of the Piedmont habitats. It wasn't operating the day I visited, but with everything else here to see, I wouldn't have had time. I'll go back to see it, but will probably call ahead to make sure its showing. It may only be available on weekends. The self-guided tour also covers the classroom labs on the lower level, with its groundhog, grasshopper and bullfrog labs, but I didn't visit them, either. The guide indicates at least one of them, the grasshopper lab, has a collection of "skins, skulls" and other things that kids may find fun. I'm not fond of bugs or insects or some amphibians, even dead ones (just ask my college zoology professor), so I'll probably continue to skip it. It's a small center, taking only about a third of the first floor, and part of the ground floor, but they've packed a lot into it. It's free, but donations are welcome, and it's a fun way to spend an hour or so.
