Julie Smith was wonderful in taking my initial call by listening to my problem and quickly identifying the best way to get me taken care of quickly. She put me in touch with their project manager, Maurice, who I've worked with before and he was at my house within 2 hours to assess the situation. He identified an action plan a set up a team to come out the next morning to install a new high grade sump pump with battery backup pump. Marcus and his team arrived the next morning as scheduled and completed the job in timely fashion ensuring I was satisfied. They did a great job and cleaned up after themselves. Total job was $1,800 to install high end professional grade PitBoss sump pump (not available via retail). They were horrible an incompetent the whole way through. They made me feel like a bad person for wanting things like the floor leveled first because it wasn't ready for tile and even I knew that. Initially, they brought over this really mismatched rainbow slate I wasn't expecting that was crumbling apart and most of the tiles were broken...had to wait for normal color slate for weeks longer...what a pain and so rude. We are extremely pleased with the work that he and his team did. We designed and bought materials ourselves using Home Depot's design service, but he made many recommendations along the way and made his own trips to pick up supplies that we forgot to get. He has high integrity - when I pointed out that the tile in the bathroom that he had installed was a slightly different shade than then one we had agreed on (beige instead of brown), he unprompted, and without extra cost, had his team immediately spend an extra day ripping up the tile and replacing it. On the overall project, his team repaired and painted everything to perfection such that there were no outstanding punch list items at the end of the project! He was always more than willing to spend time communicating with us - he explained his rationale for everything he did and was patient my very novice questioning. We worked with him nearly weekly over the course of 6 months (the length was due to DC's permitting process, not his team's speed - once we got our permits the work went very quickly) and feel like we got to know him as more than just a contractor but as a friend too. I was surprised to receive an email canceling the appointment outright because they determined that the project was outside the type of work they typically undertake. To be clear, I completely understand that a contractor has the right to determine that a prospective project is not a good fit for their company. My disappointment is not that Zion chose not to take on the project -- it is how the situation was handled. What I provided was a preliminary description of my vision and the things I hoped to explore during the consultation. It was not a finalized scope of work. I am not a remodeling professional, which is precisely why I scheduled a consultation. I expected the professionals to look at the space, discuss what was feasible, tell me what might need to be modified or eliminated, and explain what alternatives might accomplish the overall goal. Zion advertises basement remodeling services, including guidance involving issues such as egress, plumbing and electrical considerations, so I don't believe it was unreasonable for me to expect that conversation. Even if, after speaking with me, they ultimately determined that the project was outside their expertise, I would have completely respected that decision. Instead, the appointment was simply canceled by email without a phone call or any opportunity to clarify that many of the items in my description were ideas and could have been modified based on their professional recommendations. I can't speak to the quality of Zion's construction work because I never had the opportunity to meet with them. This review is specifically about my experience with their consultation and communication process. Given the strong reviews I had read about the company, I expected a more personal and professional approach to communicating that decision. A brief phone conversation would have gone a long way.
