So funny story... I had bookmarked the NQ location and ended up not finding it on one of our Mancunian outings. Fast forward a couple of months, on our first trip to the Registry Office, we parked at the Great Northern Warehouse, but we were in a hurry so we didn't take any time to have a nose around. On our second trip, we had some time to kill, so we poked around. There was a restaurant on the ground floor across from All-Star Lanes, but we didn't know what it was called. Surely, "Now serving Unicorn Meat" was not the name of the restaurant. As we were going to head off, I saw the sign (cue Ace of Base): Almost Famous! To be completely honest, while we had agreed we should try it, I don't think we had planned to have dinner here on the same day. However, we stupidly stopped for a late afternoon tea/dessert break and were trying to walk it off. Anyway, we ended up walking toward the parking garage when Mr. Snarky suggest we stop in for dinner. So we did. Man was the place hopping, but then again it was a Friday night at about 7 p.m. The hostess told us it would be about a 20 minute wait, took our number so they could text us when our table was ready, and sent us upstairs to the bar area. I really love that the bar/waiting area is upstairs, out of the way for those coming and going. There is nothing worse than a non-existant waiting area that blocks the door and is just all around awkward for everyone involved. Although you don't have to stick around, since they text you, you could go across the street for drinks, or in the summer I bet the outdoor area is a nice place to wait. We found a place to sit and parked it with our drinks. If you were thinking about a quiet dinner with lots of conversation, think again. The tunes are blasting away, but they did have some good tunes. In fact, Mr. Snarky and I were doing a lot of chair dancing throughout our dinner. The loud tunes also mean that when a staff member seats you and tells you that you need to order at the bar and there is a cart with cutlery and kitchen roll if you need it (and you will... the kitchen roll that is) you'll have trouble hearing her. I will say that the staff was a mixed bunch, some were friendly and some were just too cool for school. For example, a guy on the table next to us was trying to get some ketchup since the staff member that delivered their food couldn't run away fast enough. I saw him stop a number of staff, but in the end he just went up to the kitchen area and grabbed a bottle. He told (well more like yelled) his date that the staff kept referring him to other staff, so he just took matters into his own hands. This is why I would prefer to give them 4.5 stars, but c'est la vie. Anyway, I decided to go with the River Phoenix and Mr. Snarky went with the John Bender. We were unsure of how large the orders of fries were because, oddly, no one around us had food. So I decided on an order of the Winning Fries since I figured there would be a lot going on with my burger. Mr. Snarky went with the Bacon Bacon fries. I think it took longer for Mr. Snarky to order, than it did for our food to appear. I can tell you that on our next visit, there will only be one order of fries because there was just too much. The burger looked like it was going to be difficult to pick up and eat, but I took the stick out and gave it a good push down. Absolutely no need for cutlery ;). Mr. Snarky's burger was a bit of a different story. The John Bender has two burger patties, however it also has a spicy sausage patty, and to make a good push impossible, a poached egg. I have to say that while it was entertaining to watch Mr. Snarky attempt this feat without cutlery, it completely makes sense why they have kitchen roll instead of some pansy, folded napkins. My burger was delicious... never had Frazzles before and loved that it had French's Fried Onions (ok maybe they weren't French's brand, but they sure tasted like it). My only complaint: I wanted more BBQ sauce and more Baconnaise on the burger. Speaking of Baconnaise, I've also never had this life-changing condiment before and knew that something in my life was missing. I decided to have a taste of the Bacon Bacon fries and knew that I had ordered incorrectly. While the Winning fries are nice and keep the meal from being too rich... the Bacon Bacon fries are where it's at. I'll have to see if I can just have some extra Baconnaise on the side to dip my fries in... or a jar to take home and put on everything. I may have actually put my elbows on the table and sighed as I was attempting to finish my burger. It was delicious, but it is a lot of burger. This is one of those meals where you need to lean back in your chair and let the food settle. However, that is the great thing... you pay when you order at the bar, so you don't have to try to flag someone down for your check and wait to pay! So leave whenever you are ready. Another great trip to Almost Famous. The Star Wars themed specials are amazing. The Rebel Alliance burger was the choice this time with Pig and Wookie waffle fries. The burger was perfect and I'd love to see it become a full time addition. Fries were excellent too with the BBQ pork cooked just right. A friend had the giant Xmas special which was an absolute tower of a meal. Definitely a place to come back to over and over again. read more

I had the chilli chilli chilli cheeseburger and I must say I really loved it! It wasn't spicey enough for me but they did have extra sauces on the tables. I couldn't eat the burger with my hands but it was a great experience eating it with a knife and fork because all the sauce and cheese was everywhere on the 'plastic beg pasket'. The fries were delicious - and I was happy to have the mix of sweet and normal potatoe fries. Atmosphere was casual and felt really comfortable but it can be a bit loud at lunch time. I haven't been to Almost Famous for a while probably because I'm a veggie and they don't particularly like me for that and there is only the choice of one burger so would get a bit repetitive if I ate there a lot. But that aside I like the place. The décor is fab. I love the tables covered in sweets and the massive gorilla. It's a fun place to be. However although the food was good it didn't quite live up to the last couple of times I have been. There were hardly any sweet potato fries in the winning fries I ordered which are my favourite and the burger was tasty but not as good as I remembered. The service was friendly and we didn't have to wait long for a table even though we were a large group. Almost Famous I still like you not as much as Solita I'm afraid. read more

Decided to give it a whirl, as I'd heard such good things about the food here. Decor was brill, typical burger/bar with cute tables and lights. Went for the Alicia Silverstone burger, a mushroom and halloumi choice with some curly fries and a boozy milkshake. My partner and I also got some mac and cheese balls to share. The burger was good, lacking somewhat in the halloumi department (but probably because I LOVE halloumi and always fancy a whacking great slice on anything.) Boozy milkshake was to die for! (That changes on a daily basis, I was told. Mine included Jack Daniels and caramel) Fries were pretty good too, nothing special but good. Mac and cheese balls were also really good, 5 for one portion was perfect. They even made us a fresh batch as they burnt just one of them, which was unnecessary but lovely of them! For afters, I took a chance with the ice cream sandwhich and a cocktail. Cocktail was deelish! Ice cream sandwhich, however, was a little disappointing and melted before it'd even got to our table. Very sickly, but just personal taste. For two burgers, two fries, sharing portion, three drinks and a desert it came to £60. A little steep if I may say so, even for what we got. Quantity, it makes for a good priced meal. However in my opinion, quality just didn't justify the price. Rude and poor staff. I had eaten before at this location before. And as much as I thought the food was ok. The utterly chaotic staff, who seem bothered that they have a job, made literally no effort to welcome, or provide service. Nice Americanized Burger joint, Interesting menu, the flavors work perfectly with the description. I tried four burgers, the Good Morning American sounds odd with Cherrios. The Butter, blood and blue was my favourite. The ambience is into the 80' and late 90', my waitress impressed me!!, very professional and knowledge about it. Just got the basics. Famous burger and the fries that were regular potatoes and sweet potatoes. That was great! The service is what killed it. Ok so it's Saturday night but still.you cant have Only 3 draft beers and be out of one by 7pm! I mean? And the waitress was nice but she didn't check back til I was almost done to see if I need anything.. I.e. Ketchup for the fries! It's a burger joint! Almost Famous now freed from the confines of its former home in Northern Quarter finds its philosophy at odds with its new location. Sure it's meant to be tacky, dirty, and DIY, but that is hard to justify in a modern restaurant build. The art work is terrible, the lighting is dim and what is it with the sexist diatribe in the women's toilets? Sure the burger was good, but the service was as cold as the fries. Ok, so Almost Famous has this reputation, my girlfriend and I had to try it out. Let me add a prerequisite to my review... We've been twice, one experience was a definite 4 star, the other more like a 2.5/3 star. The first time we went, it was a Saturday night. DON'T GO ON A SATURDAY NIGHT! The first thing that put me off was the lack of booking facilities. The second thing was I couldn't tell who worked there! No discernible features, aprons, towels, name tags, uniforms, lanyards... Nothing! This may sound petty but I hate the whole bohemian gimmick, I like order and to know what I'm doing. So, through lack of ability to book, we were told an hour and a half wait. We did. Almost 3 hours later we got our table. I was already fed up with the place so wasn't going to enjoy my food to it's fullest potential. The food came and it was ok. Burger was wet with over-topping. Bacon bacon fries were excellent. All in all, not to pleasing. The second time we went, it was a Wednesday afternoon. No wait. Served food in 15 minutes. Quality was slightly better (I assume because of no need to rush in the kitchen). It's an OK burger, but there are far better in Manchester for way less. If you're going, go mid week or on an afternoon. read more

Burgers are ok. Sweet potato fries excellent. Been here twice. They put too much sauce and other things and you can't taste the meat. I know it is a American style beef pattie burger but I like a thick burger slightly pink. Nice place. Like the layout, funky good vibe. Happy to go back but burgers are average. read more
