My fringe was at that annoying length where it's a general hindrance. I like my fringe shorter but…read moreI'm always leaving cuts till the ends are touching my eyelids, which can be unpleasant. My preferred fringe length is quite a bit above my eyebrows so, by this point a fringe-scissors meeting is overdue. I usually always realise this before I'm headed somewhere and short of time. - Today was no different. I had a train to catch, and my usual hairdressers wasn't en route. So, instead, I decided to pop in to Narcissus which, conveniently, was on the way. They'd also just recently moved to bigger premises. I entered to about 10-12 members of staff all standing formally, as if there was a meeting or training session happening. All of them looking directly at me; no warm welcome or friendly smiles. This made me feel unwelcome and a little bit anxious of what was to come. It wasn't long after five o'clock. I asked if they were closed, and was told that they were open for another twenty minutes. So, maybe we got off to a bad start. Maybe we can fix things. After all, I came here instead of Toni & Guy and Rainbow Room along the road because I want to support small, local businesses and giving everywhere a shot. And for all the reluctancy to begin, I can't complain about the haircut. It was quick with minimal chat. And I get it: it was approaching close on a Saturday; they just wanted to go home. But if you say, 'thank you' and don't direct me to the till before I go, or start with the fact that there'll be a small cost, I will head for the door. Albeit, I'll be awkward and slow and think 'should I have paid?' but I'm clearly new to the salon and this should be made clear. I definitely don't mind paying for a fringe trim at all, but it's awkward when this isn't clear either from the beginning, or directly after the haircut. This isn't something the customer should have to ask and don't make them guess. So I headed for the door. There was a shout; I think from more than one. - 'It's two pounds!' they said and pointed to a tip jar. I headed back, feeling humiliated; like the butt of a joke for their inner circle; like they had placed a bet beforehand on whether I would try to leave without paying. I only had a ten pound note so apologised and handed it over. She handed me back the change and said 'have you paid the fringe trim charge?' It wasn't in the nicest of tones, and I was confused. Of course I hadn't and I don't possibly see why she would think that I had. - She had given me ten pound coins back and I'd to put the two in myself. Was this punishment? She could have just as easily taken the two from the note I'd given her. So, I don't have nice things to say for Narcissus. And, in turn, that doesn't feel nice. I do okay socially but I imagine if you had social anxiety or any kind of social barrier, something like this could really have the potential to drag you down, especially after striking up the courage to try somewhere new and unfamiliar. Whether it's 10am or 5pm, a new customer or an old one, all customers should be treated the same. A great customer experience has the power to really make someone's day, and there are great independent businesses which are testament to this. I think that Narcissus has some growing up to do in this respect.

I have been visiting Narcissus for approximately 12 years and have my haircut every four weeks. I…read moretherefore believe that I am more qualified than most to talk about customer service, standards, friendliness and the ambience of this well established business. I started to read with some interest the comments made by Ms Nicola C on her recent experience in the Narcissus salon as I did not recognise any of the traits that she has placed in her review. Then my interest started to wain towards boredom as she became more self obsessed. I foolishly believed she was going to enlighten me but no sadly she did not. Instead I believe that she has unfairly put the boot in. Maybe she was having an off day? It definitely sounded like it as she whitters on about her restricted timetable, train journey, supporting small businesses and above all the annoying length of her fringe that she had allowed to grow into her eye line. As for the way she believed that she had been looked at by the team I believe this was is down to nothing more than how she was feeling about herself. Sometimes low self esteem can cloud ones judgement! As stated I have been visiting this salon both in the old premises and the new for 12 years. There is not a tip box on display nor has there even been one so where on earth this comment came from goodness only knows perhaps Ms C was on a parallel universe and as she visits so many varied salons become confused? I am not someone who makes appointments in advance, however I do phone last minute to get in to which the phone is always answered quickly and politely and it has never been an issue to fit me in even on their busiest of days. I am always offered a tea or coffee when I enter and my jacket is placed on a stand. I have always found the service to be of the highest standard, professional, personal and extremely attentive too. The truth of the matter is that this is a friendly and welcoming team who offer outstanding service and their prices are more than realistic when compared to the likes of than toni & guy. You will be met with a warm welcome with a friendly smile. There is a real buzz about this salon and the team are like little worker ants always busying themselves and keeping the place looking smart and presentable as well as offering their expert advice. It has always been a pleasure to visit and I am sure that this will not change in the foreseeable future. Not forgetting that they do a great job of cutting and styling hair too. Ms C I believe that Toni & Guy are welcome to your business and am sure that the occasional £2 fringe cut will not be missed by this small business. If it is I will be sure to drop it in as a tip on each trip. Message to Narcissus perhaps you should start a Tip Box as I am sure that you are all more than deserving and the loyal customers I am sure already value and recognise you. Thank you Paul C A real supporter of small businesses in the community.

Decided to deviate from where I normally get my hair trimmed, or in the case of a year or so back (eep!) totally overhauled and Mandarin seemed like a good shout. I booked my appointment using their online form, as by the time I'd finished work it was too late to call the salon and within an hour or so I had an email pinged back asking to confirm my details for appointment, I'm a big fan of speedy online efficiency! I am one of those people who are prone to suffering in silence in the hairdressers and just sit there hoping my face doesn't look weird in the mirror etc, but I felt completely at ease here. My colouring and the actual cut were split between 2 different staff members but this didn't feel disjointed or miscommunicated and worked well. I absolutely love how my hair turned out and was also pretty impressed at the cost! I will definitely be back!

But last year before my summer holiday I decided to get a dash of colour in my hair for the first time! I went for a natural blonde in my ends and I loved the results! I still (9 months later) get compliments on the blonde in my hair - infact I got one just the other day at work! Kim was great and even had me in for a consultation before hand as I was unsure of whether to go for blonde or something more adventurous like pink or purple. She took a sample of my hair so I could see what each colour looked like in my hair and could pick my favourite on the day! I didn't want to have the dip dyed look I'd seen so many times where your hair looks like it's been dipped in dye and she created the exact look I was going for - like I'd been on holiday and returned with sunkissed hair. I've booked my next appointment for a few day's time as it's my 21st soon! (I really need a system for haircuts other than big events!) All I had to do was send a message to the Mandarin facebook page and a time and date was arranged. Couldn't be easier! And they do student offers! I am happy to walk all the way to riverside from my little house in stirling if it means I can get my hair cut at Mandarin. Yes, please!
