Despite the fact that this is one of the quickest airports I have experienced in getting in and out…read moreof it, it lacks many of the amenities one is used to at most big city and metro airports I've experienced. A major advantage here is its proximity to the city itself. Yet, I don't deem it a bad one. In my occasions to regularly travel yet not a professional airport reviewer by any means, and not a business traveler - but a mainly fun and demands trekker, I have developed as succinct a process for measuring the worthiness of each airport visited. My criteria are: 1) ease of access to and from public or private ground transportation: 4.0; 2) convenient parking when having to leave vehicle or dropping off: 4.0; 3) access and convenience of retrieving and dropping off rental vehicles: 3.5; 4) atmosphere, ambience, public facilities, seating areas and access to communications, charging and Wi-Fi: 3.5; 5) overall human customer service - including but not limited to ticket counter, TSA, Hospitality, Retail, Support Services, Restaurant and Baggage Handler knowledge, communication, attitude and demeanor: 3.0; 6) ease of flight information access throughout facility via signage, boards, screens or clear understandable PA system announcements: 3.5; 7) distance, maneuverability, access and convenience of trekking from gate to gate and/or concourse to concourse for connecting flights: 4.0; 8) quantity, value, convenience, quality and comfort of eateries and/or retailers: 3.0; and last, but not least 9) baggage handling, claims and retrieval location, process and lost and found assistance: 4.5. Taking all the aforementioned categories, I've devised a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best an airport can be! This airport rates a: 4.1. Most positive point(s) at this airport are: few and far between, but considering its construction phase, easy to maneuver, clean yet maize like. The most negative points here are: again, the lack of amenities plus. One caveat, while visiting this airport there was a considerable amount of construction in progress, which I am sure affected the overall outcome of my review. I therefore retain a prerogative to reevaluate Ft. Wayne International at a later date.

Decent airport!…read more Nice and small and easy to navigate! Right when you get there you walk in and there's three gates. The signs are very helpful and make it easy, for the most part, to find which gate you're supposed to be at! Security lines are never crazy long, and sometimes a breeze! ONLY gripe would be that if you accidentally go through security for the wrong gate there's no easy way to get to your accurate gate other than to go back out and then to the correct gate. I've done that before but thankfully the airline let me come back the next day for the same flight. lol! woops! Airport staff are always helpful and friendly. Never a bad experience.

It's a Monday but was really surprised at the delay for CLEAR. Once thru the process, it was fine but only two security lanes open. This is why I always allow extra time so I don't stress too much.

This small airport used to serve as a nice, more navigable, lower stress alternative to DTW…read more Nowadays, however, it is a shell of what it used to be, and I find that extremely regrettable. It is too close to DTW, which cannibalizes much of TOL's would-be business, and the City of Toledo is not in the economic condition it used to be making it less attractive as an airline destination. I am hoping newer upstarts such as Avelo and Breeze (or similar future airlines) can help revive this and other airports like it. In the 80s and 90s, as many as seven airlines made use of TOL at any given time. The activity involved as many as 40 flights to 14 destinations. This small airport with its 9-gate terminal actually peaked in 1997 with nearly 689,000 passengers. Years of decline accelerated by the recession resulted in Amercan Airlines as the only remaining legacy airline by the mid-2010s. Traffic declined to well less than 200K passengers, but a mini boom started in 2015 led by the popularity of AA's TOL to Charlotte, NC route. This resulted in a peak of nearly 250K passengers in 2018. But then COVID happened and by 2022, AA was gone leaving just Allegiant's specialized service as the sole commercial operator. I started using the airport when I moved where I am currently in SE Michigan in 2005. I routinely took NW/Delta to DTW. There I connected to where I needed to go. Unfortunately, Delta pulled out in 2011. I used it a few more times to fly AA to ORD, but I can count those times on one hand. I loved using this airport for many reasons. It was much easier for my wife to drop me at and pick me up from TOL than from DTW. It was half the drive time from my home and it was much, much easier to get in and out of the facility. When I did need to park and fly, it was MUCH cheaper to do so relative to the usurious rates charged for parking at DTW. Check-in was a breeze and the security was easy. TSA was friendly and comparatively easy to deal with. I could get here an hour or even 45 minutes before flight time and still make my flight (not that I would have recommended doing so). And upon arrival, the small baggage claim area with just two carousels made luggage collection and getaway much quicker. I miss this easy alternative. Nowadays, I use TOL strictly for an occasional rental car pickup. The only airline operating from TOL is Allegiant, which specializes in FL vacation destinations. These are not where I typically need (or want) to go. It has probably been five or six years since I last flew from TOL. I hope at some point TOL can make a comeback. Somehow, the decline and demise of smaller airports just seems synonymous with faceless corporate smothering of America. This is a nice little airport that could serve a commercial purpose with just a little help, some imagination and less greed. A city of nearly 250K-plus people should have an airport of their own as a matter of pride, independence and identity. I realize economics drives decisions on these things, but perhaps having that as the overwhelming criterion for decision-making is part of the problem. But that's a discussion for another time.

They can even coordinate a rental car for you on the field for about $40/day -- much cheaper than taking a taxi even one-way to the park. You can simply drop it off back at the airport. It's also the closest fuel stop if you're visiting Put-In-Bay. Nice, long runways and Griffin Air Services is the mechanic shop on the field. Overall, it's a nice regional airport to fly into with well maintained runways and instrument approaches. If you're visiting Cedar Point, this will be your stop!

I fly in here at least once a month for food. The airport is very easy to get to and find. Great runways and taxiways, this place is a perfect place to fly to for enjoyment and food. As fun as flying is, it's still always nice to fly someplace with a cool destination. Food, plus a museum (again, another listing) make this a great little place. As a general aviation airport, it is well-maintained and easy to fly in and out of. Today we went for another reason. The 75th anniversary of the Doolittle raid is coming up. If you don't know what that is, you should have been paying attention in history class. Go Google it, and if you have longer watch the classic war movie "Thirty Second Over Tokyo." Anyway, there aren't many participants left, so this might be the last gathering they have. They've been doing it for a few years, and each time I visit it is fun. The B-25s gather here over the few days before the anniversary, then fly down to Wright-Patt for a ceremony. The gathering at Grimes isn't quite an airshow, though you will see some flyovers. The planes taxi in and out, and you can inspect them when there's no activity. If you or anyone you know are a plane buff this will make their day, or month, or year. You can buy rides, talk to reenactors and veterans, see the "Flying Christmas Tree" light-testing plane, and walk down to the museum. Sweetie graciously came along and wasn't too bored; Baby K liked it- I was so proud. The rest of the year it is a great small airport. Fly in here if you can, or drive in for some pie and plane-watching.
